Billboard Catalog Update - August 1, 2009
Moving On: Well, folks, with the change to the Billboard web site I no longer have reliable access to the Comprehensive chart on a weekly basis, nor do I choose to purchase a Billboard.biz subscription at present. Therefore, I will be shifting my focus to a Catalog chart report from the previous Comprehensive update(s). I will probably break down and purchase occasional access to Billboard.biz to keep the other threads I have going; those would be the places to look for future Comprehensive updates from myself. Until then, please enjoy the Catalog updates for as long as I am able to do them. (Hint: The new web site shows only Top 25 but also shows Top 25 in gainers (including debuts) and droppers… which translates to the whole chart. I haven't tried that strategy for other charts but assume that it would work.)
Michael's Wake, Week 4: Michael Jackson or The Jackson 5 still hold down the top 12 positions on the chart this week. One album (the pricier Ultimate Collection box set) dropped out of the top 12, and one other (Blood On The Dance Floor) moves in. There have been no non-Jackson titles in the Top 10 of the chart in the last three weeks, with Creedence's "Chronicle" managing the best showing in that period at #11. Looks like it will be a long wait for the catalog classics to overtake the top spots.
Milestones: Casting Crowns' debut album makes a return to the chart this week at #15; that's the highest position it has reached on the chart. Despite entering in 2005 for the first time, it has been on the chart just 14 weeks to date.
Yet another Michael Jackson album (his 20th Century Masters collection) reaches the chart this week, but two other Jackson related titles drop out.
Statistics by Genre: This week's chart features 24 rock albums, 13 R&B, 6 country, 2 Broadway, 2 Christian, 2 pop, and 1 reggae album. The number of R&B albums is on the high side for the chart, but they're all Michael Jackson or Jacksons albums. Rock still rules the roost, despite not having any albums on the tally until #16.
(Note: With all due respect to Billboard's decision to include "Elv1s" on the Country charts, I have classified it as a rock album in these counts.)
