^ There is a huge difference between an indie rock band being signed and expected to sell maybe 50k with their first album, that then sell 25k, but after five albums suddenly hit it big on one hand, and a majorly hyped talent-show winner (let alone third place!) that gets offered a contract on a one-off chance. These are expected to PROVIDE and QUICKLY.

If she can't do so satisfactory, it wouldn't be weird for the label to drop her.

I'm not saying that's what WILL happen nor am I saying that has to be the case here, but talent show contestants that get signed are surely expected to perform well right from the start (especially as many tend to drop off in popularity after their first album).

I disdain Idol and the ilk with a passion, but I do think it's sad that these artists are abandoned and dropped with numbers both new artists would be considered success stories with. Most first album after Idol stories are considered crap. Usually its the second album where the artist actually gets more of a shot to actually bring themselves to the forefront whereas the debut album is basically a faceless product with lots of hired songwriters and producers. Kelly's debut album was nothing compared to the success of her second, even Adam (which is falling fast)'s second album is getting stronger reviews because this album is more what people expected from him compared to the Pink/Katy Perry knockoffs that were all over his debut.

I feel bad that so many of these Idol people were thrown to the wolves because their first album couldn't match Kelly. Yet you see The Black Keys for instance whose first album came out in early 2002 and charted nowhere and ten years later they are one of the top rock bands in America now. Their debut album could've never scored the success that their later work has, the newer stuff is more polished and they have improved on their craft. Yet in Idol-world they would've been dropped off the planet over that debut album. Most artists need time to grow artistically before they explode. Even The Beatles for several years were going from club to club perfecting their sound before they finally were signed and became overnight superstars.

Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party is still in the top 30 18 months after the release - that is worth a WOW 8-) .

Is she even known in the US? Leona Lewis's album had a huge hit, Susan Boyle's album had a holiday appeal.
Both albums were huge successes in the UK, while Rebecca Ferguson's album did only OK there.

I don't see the basis to debut high (maybe she can balance that out with longevity), maybe 20k at best.

----

@fearlesswift13: That's right. WOW at that smash.
Though Dark Side Of The Moon is a classic so hard to compare. Torches did well in the US but I think there were other albums which did even better 8-) . And staying in the top 100 for one year is not such a major achievement, might seem so because many albums fail to do so nowadays...

Wait wait... Komm mal von deinem hohen Ross runter.
I don't know, how you describe "did okay" but the album was a success with over 500k sold vying for 600k and 2x Platinum.

Her UK success has nothing to do with the US one. We will see how far she can go in the USA, but with some promotion etc she can sell much.

Her album done fantastic in the UK, Timmy thinks every album needs to pass 1million sales to be Successful.

Seriously, DSOTM is incredible. It literally *never* stops selling, especially in the US.
Counting down the days until 21 outsells Morning Glory in the UK.
Mission complete on 29.12.2012 :)

No idea who is that Jason, I have just put my feelings about Foster's album (which is one of the best albums ever recorded IMO) and i'm so glad that they are still selling after one year being in the chart and with only 1 hit single.

#23 for Kris so so sad, hopefully that soundscan numbers are a bit higher  So underrated!
