ROSS IS BOSS, JOSS IS NEXT

Def Jam/IDJ Rapper Will Easily Top Chart

August 1, 2012

Rick Ross returns this week’s HITS Album chart to a semblance of sanity.

The large and in-charge rapper continues Def Jam/IDJ’s recent dominance of the marketplace with God Forgives, I Don’t, which will debut next week with between 200-220k in sales, easily going #1. His last album, Teflon Don, sold 176k upon release in July 2010. Previous label winners include Nas, who debuted at #1 last week, and newcomer Frank Ocean, with a #2 bow last month for his acclaimed debut, channel ORANGE.

S-Curve soul diva Joss Stone’s The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 reunites her with Steve Greenberg, and it’s on tap for between 21-25k, based on one-day sales reports from those music retailers not summering at their homes in the Hamptons or Laguna.

Emblem/Reprise/WB country music group Gloriana’s sophomore album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind, is looking at first-week sales of between 18-21k.

Veteran Nuclear Blast Berkeley thrash band Testament’s tenth studio album, Dark Roots of Earth, is looking at between 15-18k.

RCA’s Sparkle soundtrack, featuring the last recorded music by the late Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks, is looking at 13-16k, in front of the movie’s Aug. 17 opening.

Album sales were down 9% vs. last week, down 15% vs. same week last year and down 3% year to date.

Track sales were down 3% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.

TEA sales were down 7% vs. last week, down 10% vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.

I hope these 2 surpass the estimations:

200-220k for Rick Ross :o ? This seems to be a punch in the face for other urban superstars who are far more known but debuted with far less (Chris Brown, Usher, even Frank Ocean as his album had huuuuuge hype)...

Very disappointing results for Gloriana (their last album debuted with 44k, plus their current single is their highest charting on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Country Chart) and the soundtrack of Sparkle (I thought Whitney Houston singing on it would create so much buzz for a 60k+ debut)...

Are you kidding? Rick Ross has amassed 4 albums (3 #1s and a #2) and a loyal fanbase. You shouldn't compare him with R&B singers. Their market is slightly different. You should compare him with other rappers.

I bet you aren't listening to Hip Hop or Urban at all...

Rick Ross is a known rapper in the US. He has many features on popular rap songs and also his own style.

Rick Ross a huge name in the hip hop business? I think artists like Drake, Eminem, Lil Wayne or Kanye West are bigger than him... Rick Ross only had a top 50 single in his last era and he even only had one top 20 single so far. Another surprising thing is that if HDD projects his sales right, it could be Rick Ross' highest debut sales with an album and not many rapper could say this if they are five or more studio albums deep in their discography.

I think R&B artists aren't that far from hip hop ones and so they can still be compared somehow. Rick Ross is even charting on the US R&B chart and had 6 top ten singles on it...

This is going to be his 4th #1 album, Timmy... what thing you're not getting?

And no. You should compare Rick Ross with Nas, Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne and others...

Chris Brown, Usher and Frank Ocean have a different market.

poor sparcle. I'm generally underwhelmed by the sales her death generated. Whitney was one a kind, outstanding talent and force in the music industry, en par with Jackson and Madonna and at a certain time, bigger than those two combined.

I'll be buying the soundtrack.

Rick Ross doesn't care about Hot 100 hits, he runs the streets with his pure rap bangers.

To be fair I don't know who on earth Rick Ross is.

I rarely listen to rap though.
Counting down the days until 21 outsells Morning Glory in the UK.

The increase on digital tracks sales is not making up for the awful loss in the album market.

Bo$$! Finally someone that can outsell Nicki Minaj in the best selling rap album category.
