Only a week and a half away, this year's Australian Open is shaping up to be a very interesting one indeed.

Defending Champions:

Rafael Nadal - Men's Singles (he should be back in full force by now after losing the French and not being able to compete in Wimbledon)

Serena Williams - Women's Singles (gonna be really interesting to see how her first Grand Slam since her verbal attack on a lineswoman goes and how she fares against new returns Maria Sharapova, current US Open Champion Kim Clijsters, and Justine Henin)

Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan - Men's Doubles (after dominating at the year-end championships, the brothers look to continue their hot streak)

Venus & Serena Williams - Women's Doubles (i feel bad for the women's teams who have to stand the barrage of these two champions but Venus is yet to show signs of recovering after a shaky season and bad US Open)

Wildcards:
Men's Tournament (All Australian):
Carsten Ball
Jason Kubler
Nick Lindahl
Bernard Tomic

Women's Tournament (All Australian except Justine Henin):
Casey Dellacqua
Justine Henin
Alicia Molik
Olivia Rogowska

eight other wildcards (4 men, 4 women) are yet to be announced

And then fall in love and get married.

personally, i'm rooting for sharapova to do well and venus too since they both haven't had spectacular showings recently at Grand Slams. Serena's always the safest bet though xD. for men's i'm a federer fan so i hope he does good but i am kinda waiting for a murray vs. djokovic showdown.

might as well post some results of Australian Open warm-up tournies before the major starts :D :D

Qatar Open:
Nikolay Davydenko defeated Rafael Nadal: 0-6, 7-6(8), 6-4.
This is Davydenko's second straight win, after winning the Year-End Championships. Question is, can he carry the momentum into the Aussie Open, where it matters?

Brisbane International:
Kim Clijsters defated Justine Henin: 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6)
Kim also won the US Open and after this performance, might be the one to beat in Australia

Final between Andy Roddick & Radek Stepanek is TBD

I think Kim Clijster will do well and I'm interested to see how Justine Henin will fare!
My favourite to win is Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal!
I've been a fan of Serena since 2002!

I hope Andy Murray wins the mens draw, and Jelena Jankovic ( ) wins the womens. Even though I know she's still in shakey bakey form, I hope she can go 1 further than her 2008 semi final.

I wouldn't mind if Maria Shutupova or Justine Henin won.

i'm a little afraid of how good serena is. lol. she's unstoppable at her best and i think under that hot, aussie sun, it's even harder for her opponents cuz u get tired quicker and if ur not speedy and ur playing serena, u've got not shot rlly. lol.

i've always REALLY liked jelena. she's got it in her and i think we saw it at the US Open a couple years ago. maria sharapova i think is always a contender though. when she's on a hot streak she can take almost ne one down, but her serve is iffy right now (and that's being nice). Andy Murray, for me though, has to get a bit riskier when playing federer or verdasco or fernand gonzalez. people with big shots eventually can get the better of them. his best chance is best of 5 though, where big hitters have to be on fire for 3 sets to beat him, which is not easy.

I think this probably the most open men's grand slam in a very long time, any one of Federer, Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Del Potro and now Davydenko could win it. I suspect it could end up being one of the latter two, they've both made huge strides forward in the last few months. I'd like Nadal or Murray to win it, but I don't actually think they will.

The women's side is also pretty open, but I think you'd still have to make Serena the slight favourite, Clijsters showed real mental vulnerability in Brisbane. I don't think Sharapova's a contender this year, as her serve still seems really shaky and Henin is also a long shot. Venus is always a dark horse at any slam, but she's never done very well in Australia apart from 2003, so I suspect she'll make yet another early exit, would love her to win it though.

Would like to see Jelena Jankovic and Dinara Safina win slams this year. It'll be interesting to see how Kim does after winning the US Open and how well Justine Henin can do after coming back. I'm going for a Serena win and Federer in the men's

I reckon it will be a Williams sister/Fedal or Djokovic. I can't see there being any major shocks. I actually think that the return of Kim and Justine could be beneficial to the WS as it will probably force them to completely up their games.

Murray is a headcase. He won't win. Hell he even got to the final of the Hopman cup with Robson this week and then completely choked away their chances.

Venus was bugged by knee tendonitis for the second half of '09, the time when she usually shines. I hate that she's so stubborn and refuses to rest but hopefully she'll be ready.

Outside picks for the Womens would be Sorana Cirstea (although she is only just coming back from a stress fracture) and Jelena Dokic. The mens would be Tsonga and Simon. Hopefully the pusher Wozniacki will lose early.

Andy Roddick wins warm-up Brisbane. Marian Cilic, on the other hand, won the Chennai Open for a second year. I think he's got a good shot too; he's owned nadal the last couple times they've played.

just watched the hit for haiti presentation which was lots of fun. it made me wanna root for rafa now though. he's looking kinda down, and he mentioned how he has no confidence and how he hasn't won a tournament in forever a couple of times so i hope he has a good run at the aussie open.

14th-seeded Maria Sharapova loses first round to fellow-Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4.

MARIA! :o For the haters:

Image

So glad she won! Eeeee.

I went to the tennis yesterday. SO many matches got cancelled. I got to watch Anastasia Pavyluchenkova and Yanina Wickmayer. Wickmayer's match was meant to start at 11, but due to rain delays, it finished at 5:15pm!

I wish I'd gone today instead, there's 5-6 matches on each of the outside courts.

SO looking forward to Henin-Dementieva. Was so stoked to be able to see Dementieva and Jankovic on Margaret Court Arena yesterday, but then the rain moved Dementieva to Hisense and Jankovic was cancelled. Grrrr!

I don't think Clijsters will win. She was lucky she won the US Open. Safina lost 3R, Dementieva 2R, Jankovic 2R, Azarenka 3R, Ivanovic 1R, Radwanska 2R. The field was notably weak. Venus, Serena and Wozniacki were her toughest matches. Wozniacki was also VERY lucky to make that final, per the weak field.

Her AO draw is a bit tougher. If she wants to win, she will have to potentially beat, Petrova 3R, Kuznetsova 4R, Henin/Dementiva/or Wickmayer QF, Jankovic/Safina/or Kirilenko SF.

For me, I don't think Clijsters has proven she is good enough to win another grand slam, just yet. I would love for her to prove me wrong,

Dementieva is a machine. Because some 1R matches are still being played tommorow, I hope the Dementieva/Henin match will be on Thursday night, because I have tickets to Rod Laver Arena on thursday night!

I hope the final is Dementieva vs. Serena Williams. I imagine it would be like their SF at Wimbledon. Their Sydney game was good, but Serena is something else at Grand Slams.

Igor Andreev gave Federer a run for his money today, he had 2 or 3 set points in the 3rd set, with both players having 1 set each. Federer saved all set points, and went on to win the set in a tiebreak, clinching the last set 6-0. :o The first 3 sets were great.

Matches on Rod Laver Arena tommorow day:

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Svetlana Kuznetsova (3)

Kim Clijsters (15) v Tamarine Tanasugarn

Rafael Nadal (2) v Lukas Lacko

Night:

Elena Dementieva (5) v Justine Henin (WC)

Marin Cilic (14) v Bernard Tomic (AUS)
Onika Maraj, Rihanna, Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Nicky Romero, Taylor Swift, David Guetta, Danity Kane.

She will have a tough one against Henin though. It's early in the tournament, so Dementieva wont be red hot, but she has a lot of weapons.

Molik was serving for the match... CHOKER!

I cant wait for the 3R, when all the terrible Australians are knocked out, and decent players get the evening spots on Rod Laver.

in the US, the vania king match was followed very closely (since she's american). she served for it in the second, then lost the set in a tiebreaker. then she was down 1-5 in the third and came back to win it 7-5. that was prolly the most exciting for me :D :D. too bad it wasn't a video court

Clijsters, Kuznetsova into 3rd round
By JOHN PYE, AP Sports Writer
1 hour, 13 minutes ago

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters took another step toward winning a second consecutive Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tamarine Tanasugarn in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Clijsters won the last six games after dropping serve to open the second set against the 32-year-old Thai veteran who was playing her 51st major.

Clijsters will next play No. 19 Nadia Petrova, one of the Russian women already into the third round after French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Kirilenko advanced earlier Wednesday.

On the men’s side, No. 7 Andy Roddick had a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci and No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, the 2007 runner-up, beat Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

The 26-year-old Clijsters won at Flushing Meadows in September in only her third tournament back from two years off the tour in which she got married and had a baby.

No. 15-ranked Clijsters improved to 20 wins and three losses since her comeback, a run in which she became the first mother to win a major since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980.

She beat former No. 1-ranked Justine Henin for the title at the Brisbane International on Jan. 9 in what was Henin’s comeback tournament after 20 months off the tour.

The Belgian pair will stay on track to meet in the quarterfinals here if unranked and unseeded Henin can get past Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva later Wednesday. Clijsters has reached the semifinals or better in her last four trips to Melbourne Park and lost the 2004 final to Henin.

No. 16-ranked Yanina Wickmayer, a Belgian who didn’t get a seeding here because her suspension for a World Anti-Doping Agency “whereabouts rule” violation hadn’t been overturned before entries closed, reached the third-round with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over No. 12 Flavia Penneta of Italy.

Kuznetsova was first into the third round when she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-2.

She broke Pavlyuchenkova’s serve twice to start and got on top of most rallies with a strong forehand and had 27 winners against only seven for her fellow Russian.

Kuznetsova, who has two Grand Slam singles championships—adding the French last year to her win at the 2004 U.S. Open—has a chance to reach the No. 1 ranking for the first time if she clinches the Australian Open title.

In eight previous trips to Melbourne Park, Kuznetsova has advanced to the quarterfinals twice, including last year when she lost to eventual champion Serena Williams after being up a set and a break.

This year, the 24-year-old Russian is feeling more confident of winning.

“Yes, definitely, I know all the way how to go—I’ve done it twice,” Kuznetsova said. “It’s exciting. You always have different motivation at the Grand Slams—I love to play here.”

No. 11 Marion Bartoli advanced and Britain’s Elena Baltacha equaled her best run at the season’s first major by reaching the third round with a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 30 Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine. She could next meet 2009 finalist Dinara Safina, who was playing later Wednesday.

China’s Zheng Jie won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 over No. 24 Maria Jose Martinez of Spain.

No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who lost the U.S. Open final to Clijsters, had a 6-4, 6-2 first-round win over Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak.

In other first-round matches carried over to Wednesday from the rain-interrupted opening days, No. 7 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus beat French wild card Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-2, 6-0, No. 9 Vera Zvonareva beat Kristina Kucova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-0 and No. 16 Li Na of China, a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open, beat New Zealander Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-0.

No. 22 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and No. 29 Shahar Peer of Israel also advanced.

Serena Williams returned to Grand Slam play Tuesday for the first time since her tirade against the line judge who called her for a foot fault during her U.S. Open semifinal loss to Clijsters.

And while the 11-time major winner did seem less effusive than usual on court, Williams didn’t hold back after her 6-2, 6-1 win over 18-year-old Urszula Radwanska about what she thought of the punishment.

“I don’t know whoever got fined like that. People said worse, done worse,” she said, “I think it was a bit much.”

Williams was fined $82,500 and warned she could be suspended from the U.S. Open for another “major offense” at any Grand Slam event in the next two years. Williams said she doubts whether one of the top men would have drawn such a fine.

“In tennis I think we’ve been able to do really well with having fought so hard to get equal prize money,” said Williams, who last year became the first woman to surpass $6 million in prize money in a season. “I think that’s really good,” she said. “But I think we still sort of, say, live in a man’s world. Some incidents can bring you back to life and back into reality.”

Sixth-seeded Venus Williams opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lucie Safarova. Melanie Oudin, the 18-year-old American who made a surprising run to last year’s U.S. Open quarterfinals, lost 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia.

Roger Federer had a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-0 first-round win over Russia’s Igor Andreev, while No. 3 Novak Djokovic, the 2008 champion here, beat Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

Nadal breezes past lacklustre Lacko

MELBOURNE, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Defending champion Rafa Nadal secured a place in the third round of the Australian Open by thrashing Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko 6-2 6-2 6-2 on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was rarely pushed by 75th-ranked Lacko, who struggled with his serve and amassed 53 unforced errors at Rod Laver Arena.

Lacko saved two of three match points at 5-2 in the third, but hit into the tram-lines on the last to concede the match in less than two hours.

Nadal next plays the winner of the match between Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber and Wayne Odesnik of the United States.
