My Love = flop then came "Obsessed".

She'll be fine once she drops a GOOD lead single.
 Your theory is severely flawed. Unlike Lil Love and My Love, Triumphant is a single from HER album and is a lead single (at least that's the general consensus among the U.S. media). The failure of the song will affect her subsequent single/album much more than My Love and Lil Love did.
If Mariah releases a song, and the US media never hears it, does it make a sound?

I don't think it'll affect her that much. Jenny Lo had "Loubuitins" (or however that's spelled) and she managed to come back with "On The Floor".

No!

In case you missed it, the album isn't coming until March at the earliest so Triumphant's success or failure will be well forgotten by then.
Yeah, I read the last four pages.

I really think we are underestimating the influence of the American entertainment media here. They will use the failure of Triumphant as a cloud over Mariah's head. They will say that she only called Triumphant a buzz single because it flopped. They will probably go so far as to say she pushed back the release of the album because of Triunphant.

No matter how factually incorrect they may be, they will definitely push this notion and the music-buying public will believe it.

I honestly think that the U.S. entertainment media have been slowly but surely becoming antagonistic towards her. Maybe it will change after her debut on AI.
I'm gonna do you like drugs tonight...

But Baditude is right. When Triumphant dropped, EVERYONE thought this was her comeback single and first single from the album. That's how it was sold to the media. It was expected the album would come out around November, as happened with Memoirs.

I don't know how she'll deal with this single underperforming. Will she try some pop/dance elements (considering the positive reactions to the remixes) or do those kind of r&b/hip-hop songs on the album?

I hope she doesn't perform Triumphant.
That song is an embarrassment....

I can just imagine Mariah looking lost and clueless whilst Meek and Rick rap the verses.

PLEASE just be a buzz single lol. i had to force myself to like it lmao.

i looked and from what i can see she didn't say "first single from my new album" so hopefully...

i don't mind if its on the album i just hope of a stronger lead single (or a really strong second single!)

That never happened in any Mariah era at all! :-?
I know right.
It's such a COP-OUT!

If you're going to release something, at least stand behind the song.
It's a slap in the face to those that do support the song.

That's the problem.
Mariah (and her team) treated the song as a real single, and gave it full single treatment (video, promo, remixes etc..).

If Triumphant suddenly became a hit, I doubt they would be calling it an advanced single.

It's such a cop-out.

If they were unsure about the single, they should have just given the song as gift to the fans, and stated it as such.

I have to agree with you @SmartIsNewSexy.

This was obviously the lead single....why else would she have remixed it?

If she wants to re-release MCIIY, she has to add 2 new classics to these 2 duets. Otherwise it's just stupid.

I'm just wondering if the JD/BMC songs will sound ultra dated by March.
More importantly, will they even make the final cut of the album? March is a longgggggggggggggggggggg way from now, and she will and SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO WORK WITH OTHER PEOPLE. Like it or not, they're blaming this on her sound with those 2. Not to mention the fact, no matter how much Mariah has her hand in the whole song process, new people can only help bring out "uncharted territory" in her. While i'll still stan for "Triumphant", I also stand by the fact that she can't keep running to the same people album after album. Because, frankly, they aren't helping her at all, in the bigger picture.
SPEAK IT!!
Sadly, ALL 7 songs that she has completed for the album have been with Jermaine Dupri.

Full single treatment isn't the issue. She should never have labeled it lead single and let people think that the album would follow a few months after.

If it had been a hit, then they could've easily build on it, even if they called it buzz/advance/for-the-fans/out-of-the-blue single from the start.
The other way around - it flops so they re-label it advance - is so messy.

Because she wanted to give fans who didn't like the rap heavy version something to enjoy.

This is the first single from the album. Press release stated first advance single. Mariah said new single. Where did she herself say lead single? It's all hearsay.

But this was always going to be a standalone release. It's going to be on the album unless she changes her mind in the next 7 months.

But it was ALWAYS the plan to promote the album with the future singles and release the album next year.

She just wanted to give the fans something to keep them occupied.

I agree she should have just released it for free but what's done is done.

All these assumptions about if the single had done well then the album would have been out sooner etc are all wrong.

Well if you like Christmas music as I do, no it's not. But these 2 duets don't deserve re-release.

meh...semantics...

Mariah is free to label Triumphant whatever and however she want to: buzz single, advanced single.

It doesn't change the transparency of it all.

Mariah never had to say lead single, it was implied. Come on...everyone thought this was the lead single.

And what about the video...another treat for the fans?

Calling this an advance single or whatever you want is damage control as @smartisthenewsexy said.

If this was truly intended to be a standalone release/something to keep the fans happy until the single was out, she would of said that from the beginning.

^ Why are ye being so cynical?

She knew fans expected music this year and obviously their plans were to release the album next year in conjunction with Idol which would mean no music this year.

But she finished this song, loved it and wanted to put it out. She played it for the label (without playing any other songs) and said she wanted to release it and they agreed. They set out a marketing plan and as part of the promo for the song, that TV performance that we heard about today, was arranged.

So people just need to either enjoy the song and/or remixes or else move on because all the cynicism and complaining is as "stale" as how most of the people who dislike the song view it.

I am not being cynical.

How do you even know all these details anyways?

I am sorry, but I think you are wrong about most of things you think are going on with this song and her plans.
