Strip Scribbles: Whitney Houston tribute, new Katy Perry song at Billboard Music Awards

Exclusive news ahead of Sunday’s 2012 Billboard Music Awards that will be an emotional roller-coaster: There will be tears as the Whitney Houston tribute plays out and daughter Bobbi Kristina and sister-in-law Pat Houston are onstage to accept the Millennium Award posthumously at MGM Grand Garden Arena. John Legend and Jordin Sparks will perform a tribute.

There will be excitement as hometown darling Katy Perry debuts her new song “Wide Awake” from her documentary “Part of Me” to be released July 5.

There will be disappointment that leading nominees Adele and Rihanna won’t be attending, Adele because she’s gone into hiding overwhelmed by her fame and fortune and Rihanna because she’s upset that Chris Brown and Drake have been rapping about her string of “naughty” controversies in the past three weeks. I’m told that she doesn’t want to meet the media mobs hungry for her reaction to their versions of her sexy shenanigans.

Chris has been added to the star lineup along with Lisa Marie Presley, Robin Thicke, Brandy, Monica, Miley Cyrus, Nelly Furtado, Linkin Park and previously announced Justin Bieber, Cee Lo Green, The Wanted and Usher. “Dancing With the Stars” favorites Julianne Hough and our hometown Empress of Soul Gladys Knight, plus Natasha Bedingfield are presenters.

Stevie Wonder be presented with the Billboard Icon Award during the awards. Our popular odds-maker Johnny Avello at the Wynn sports books predicts that Adele will win Top Artist and Top Female Artist, Justin Bieber Top Male Artist, Lady Antebellum Top Group and Scotty McCreery Top New Artist.

I totally agree. Whoopi, John and Jordin all did amazing job. I also like Bobbi's speech, too. It is the best Whitney tribute.

and it till wasn't enough. mariah, madonna, janet and celine shud put their egos aside.. because they were her peers, her hardest rivals.. and i want them to take on some of her most memorable songs.. it would be great for them and a just tribute to one of the alltime greats - their friend.

I'm with Stephan on this one. Jordin's tribute last night was phenomenal but I'd love to see Whitney's peers show her the ultimate sign of respect, to perform in memory of The Voice.

yes, she also deserves more than the Millennium Billboard Award. Especially since her voice is considered as an American treasure. The music industry has not done enough yet, to honor her impact.

I agree about Madonna, Janet, Celine, and Mariah doing some sort of tribute to Whitney.

The Big 5 lost a member, it would be a massive shame if they didn't come together.

At the very least Mariah and Celine should do something.
The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.

I think that the vocal trinity (Whitney, Celine and Mariah) has never been as close as we fans assume. I don't think that especially Mariah and Celine are close friends at all.

^ Whitney and Mariah were close.

But I don't think Mariah and Celine or Whitney and Celine have done anything with each other outside of sharing the same stage....

They don't necessarily have to be close, I'm pretty Whitney influenced them all so a tribute is much needed.

Yes, a proper tribute is needed...

But they should've given Whitney her flowers when she was here to appreciate it.

Whitney Houston duets with Jordin Sparks for 'Sparkle' track
by Kyle Anderson

When Whitney Houston passed away back in February, she had already finished working on her final film Sparkle, a remake of a rags-to-riches flick from 1976 co-starring Jordin Sparks. That toil included Houston’s final new recordings, including the duet “Celebrate,” which just surfaced this morning.

Like all the music from Sparkle, this tag-team between Houston and Sparks was produced by R. Kelly, and his fingerprints are all over the bubbly backing track and unfussy arrangement.

Houston isn’t asked to do all that much, but the song drives home how authoritative her voice could still be and just how much Sparks’ approach owes to Whitney’s. Give “Celebrate” a spin below.

I don't hear the great improvement in her voice that was rumoured. However Whitney just knew how to deliver a song regardless of the state of her voice she had perfect timing and understood every song she sang.

I Think The Improvements They Were Talking About Were From Her Nothing But Love Tour...We All Know How Publicized That Was When They Showed That She Could Not Hit The Notes Properly...So This Song Is A Big Improvement Since Then...And It Also A Big Improvement Since Her Celebration Of Gospel Performance And 2011 Pre-Grammy's Performance!

Well to be fair they were live showings... also the pre grammy performance was obviously after this was recorded.

Actually The 2011 Pre-Grammy Performance That She Did As A Tribute To Her Cousin Dionne Was Before She Recorded His Eyes Is On The Sparrow. There Were Tweets During October When The Studio That She Was Using To Record The Song Stated That She Was There Recording...She Wasn't Going To Play The Mother Of Sparkle Until Septemeber Late August.

Sorry I thought you were meaning her performance at Kelly Prices pre grammy party which WAS after this was recorded and showed how damaged her voice still was.
