Ugh :(
They have so much money that they can find/make a perfect doublet for Adele to film video instead of her. Only one thing was "bad" during this era - no videos.

Adele, Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert in a Three-Way Race for #1

May 16, 2012

While it's still early in the week, a three-way battle is shaping up for #1 between Adele and Carrie Underwood, both of which will have substantial post-Mother's Day drops, and Adam Lambert, who appears to be trending to the high end of expectations.

Well...that's exactly the point I was making.

Billboard exists for the benefit of the record labels and the rules they set up are for the benefit of the industry. They are not there to reflect reality, historical accuracy or any statistical OCD that any of us may have.

The record labels didn't want old product hanging around in the charts so they got Billboard to exclude them - thereby, at a stroke, making all longevity records null and void. Years later, when it became so blatantly wrong to all, the decision was reversed.

I am not that fussed on Thriller and I don't have a copy of 21 but I do like to see records tumble so I'll be more than happy if 21 hangs on for 72, 81 or 101 weeks.

In summary:

1. The Billboard 200 is officially, internationally recognised as the US chart. Therefore the album that spent the longest at No 1, in the top 5, top 10, top 100, top 200 is the album that spent the most weeks in those positions in this chart. It goes down in historical record. In 100 years' time, when HAL9000 and I are long since dead and the people living only have a vague, if any, conception of who Michael Jackson and Adele were, it will be the chart that remains in history. If Adele's album reaches 72 wks in the Top 5, people studying the charts will note that it broke MJ's record for an artist album. (Of course by that point, there may have been other albums which have spent even longer in the Top 5...)

2. It's completely undeniable, even by HAL9000, that if "21" reaches 72 weeks, it will have had the most successful US Top 5 run of any artist album on its original release.
Counting down the days until 21 outsells Morning Glory in the UK.

Adam is tipped for around 70-80k, so a 20-30% drop for 21 unless sales trend upwards.

...but you'll know that it is a hollow victory.

Seriously though, I do hope it goes on to break the record. It is fantastic to see an album come so unexpectedly to the fore and blitz the opposition.

LOL I'm not looking for a 'victory', even if it falls narrowly short, its US chart run has been phenomenal and no-one can complain.

To be honest I didn't realise there would be this much fuss about supposed 'missing weeks' for Thriller (which I wasn't even aware of).

72 wks would still be the best for an artist album on its original chart run by any standards, which would be astonishing given how superlative Thriller's original chart run was (71 consecutive wks in the Top 5).

Adam Lambert Headed for No. 1 on Next Week's Billboard 200 Albums Chart

May 16, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles

The Good News: Adam Lambert is vying for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart next week.

The Bad News: His Trespassing set may only sell around 70,000 to 80,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, May 20, so say industry sources. It could mark the smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since last August (chart dated Aug. 20), when Adele's 21 sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

But don't break out the bubbly just yet. Trespassing may be blocked from the top slot next week by either Carrie Underwood's current champ, Blown Away, or Adele's 21. Both albums could sell perhaps 65,000 to 75,000.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, May 23.

Lambert, who finished in second place on the 2009 season of Fox TV's "American Idol," saw his first major label studio album, For Your Entertainment, debut at No. 3 later that year with 198,000 in its first week (according to SoundScan). The album was released during the very busy Thanksgiving shopping week and was blocked from the top slot by Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream (a debut at No. 1) and Andrea Bocelli's My Christmas at No. 2.

To support Trespassing this week, Lambert played ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday (May 14) and is scheduled to perform on "American Idol" on Thursday (May 17).

Other albums on course for notable debuts next week include the Glee - the Music: the Graduation Album soundtrack, Tenacious D's Rize of the Fenix, Beach House's Bloom and Garbage's Not Your Kind of People.

Arab, completely unrelated but do you have sales of MDNA for this week? Is it still in top 100? It's been discounted to 3.99 on Amazon. Wonder if 21 will ever sell for that low? Geez.

Lol. It was 65 last week with sales under 10k. It's hard to imagine 21 getting down so low. This may be the lowest week of the run for 21 (though I think BB awards will save it) and it will still sell close to 10x MDNA.

This could bring her a sales boost in the UK.

http://www.itv.com/news/2012-05-17/adel ... lo-awards/

Adele set to dominate Ivor Novello Awards.

Adele must surely need a trophy bunker rather than a cabinet as she looks set to make another impressive haul at The Ivor Novello Awards in London tonight.

The 24-year-old singer is nominated in four categories in the awards, including Best Song Musically and Lyrically, Best Album and Most Performed Work.

It's a pity they're not televised on a big terrestrial channel, as it would probably easily send the album to number 1. The album chart is really tight this week, with Tenacious D, Keane and Emeli Sandé all within 1k of each other. The number 1 will probably be Keane again with a sub-20k figure.
