It sold 3,750,102 copies as of May 6, so it should sell its 4mlnth copy within 2-3(maybe 4) weeks

A record 21 holds on the US BB200 which doesn't get
much of a mention if at all

It has reached no.1 on 10 separate occasions

I think that is at least double anything else from the modern era

I wrote about that already months ago. The record was 8 runs by the Soundtrack of South Pacific and another album I can't remember at the moment...

http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/top-2 ... 3-Jun2012/

21 is currently in 7th place all-time, and, just like in the UK, is one place behind Morning Glory by Oasis.

1. White Ladder, David Gray
2. Gold: Greatest Hits, Abba
3. A Woman's Heart, Various
4. The Best Of 1980-1990, U2
5. Live At The Point, Christy Moore
6. (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, Oasis
7. 21, Adele
8. The Collection 81-91, Christy Moore
9. 1, Beatles
10. Tracy Chapman, Tracy Chapman

If I remember correctly, 21 is still charting highly in Ireland so has a chance to move higher up this list, probably into all-time top 5 (no sales figures given so I don't know how close it is to the albums above it...)
In reality these are the best selling albums of the past twenty years in Ireland, not all time.
Hi Hur, I'm not disputing the point that these are since 92, but how does that tie in with Tracy Chapman's eponymous album being number 10? It was released in 1988, surely it hasn't charted in the top 10 purely just on the sales made after it had already been released for 4 years?
Hello Rundmck,

I really don’t know, to be honest. I noticed what you are saying.

Someone working at IRMA told me that (via private, I can post the email if you want) and looking at the results, I tend to believe it is true. One of the British top sellers (Greatest Hits, by Queen) not on the Irish chart is fine, but so many?

Where are Brothers In Arms, Sgt Peppers, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Abba's Greatest Hits (more than 200,000 by 1979), Rumours, Bad, Thriller and several others? And no The Joshua Tree?

I will try to find it out. All in all, the only strange case if that of Tracy Chapman.

I promise I will ask about it and post their response if I get one.

No, it isn't save yet... 3.5 mio. isn't unreachable, surprising successful albums can easily reach that.
Think about e.g. I Dreamed A Dream or Noel... They managed to sell huge within 6 weeks or something.

Not saying that it will happen, but 21 is not so far , that it can't be caught up with.

Well, her sales stand @ 3.5mln+ and there are still 6 months left. I don't think that Bieber or Taylor are able to sell well over 4mln copies in a calendar year

21 will continue to sell a lot of copies this year, so i don't see anyone get there!

Some might think it's crazy that i say this, but at this point there seems to be no end of Adele's sales, so i wont be surprised to see it turn out to be a contender for best selling album of 2013 anymore! I don't think that will happen, but atleast it will be a best-seller in 2013 too, and HUGE Adele sales can't surprise me at this point!

Right, but we're only halfway through the year.

Sure Bieber could sell 4m in the second half of the year if he does well. "21" is still charting high and will overall end up with 4.25m minimum. The other potential contenders (Bieber, Taylor) have released too late to catch up with her.
(Plus remember that Billboard's "chart year" only goes to end of November, thus giving them even less time to catch up..)

The only way 21 will be caught is if there is some huge unexpected event like a bestselling charity album or something.

Basically someone is soon going to have to re-write the "Thriller" wikipedia page about it being the only album to be the US bestseller two years in a row (sorry, couldn't resist!)
Counting down the days until 21 outsells Morning Glory in the UK.
Mission complete on 29.12.2012 :)

Those artists you cite are already known, but what is if there's a bloody new artist that sells extremely huge within a short time? For example, he releases his album in November and sells like 2 mio. per week?
Of course, this won't be "normal" or to expect, just wanting to say that you can't write something unusual like this off.
Or what ifit Justin Bieber's new album sells like we've only seen a teenage artist's album selling 10-15 years ago? It could theoretically be, that every teeny is freaking out and they ran in the shops by millions to buy this album.

I'm not saying it will happen and you can't predict something like this, but it can happen.

2 millions per week ? There's no point in being afraid of such things. There's so little chance that those irrealistic situations happen that we can admit that 21 will definitely be 2012's best selling album :)

even if I wish it was Taylor

21 has sold 3.5 Million this year but the Billboard
calandar year runs Dec 03 2011 - Nov 25 2012

So if you add Dec 2011 (1.25M?)to the 2012 total of
3.5M

Total 4.75 Million?

If I am right another album would probably have to sell over 5 Million in under 6 months

You are right to assume nothing thou

But it does look very good

Oldbloke keeps a count of the Billboard year on the United States Year to Date thread. His last update on May 19 said she'd reached 4.668 million, so that would give her around 4.9 million by now (http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=3776670).

That's almost certainly enough to be safe, especially as her rivals won't have the benefit of the pre-Christmas period, which is often when these surprise big sellers pop up.

As for the calendar year, it's unlikely but not impossible that she'll be overtaken - but there are loads of cases where people have been. In 2005, for example - admittedly a better sales environment - 50 Cent's The Massacre was best-selling album of the Billboard Year, but The Emancipation of Mimi had overtaken him by the end of the calendar year.

I hope others have left it too late, though - I want an emphatic, uncontroversial victory

Some of those unexpected huge sellers could be:
- a big soundtrack like The Bodyguard, Titanic or a bigger type of Glee/HSM
- a charity album
- an album by a dead mega superstar
- a Christmas album
- a new artist's album that is quickly turning out to be the voice of today's generation

Even if you leave the BB calendar year sales for 21 at 5 million (which is almost what she has now), Justin Bieber (who I think has best chance to make a run, that we know of) would have to average over 217,391 copies sold per week until Nov 26 just to match 5 million. Taylor Swift will be released too late in year, imo. I don't know why TS' label doesn't hold her album to take advantage of holiday sales and push it back into the following Grammy year. But since I haven't heard any release date except September (which turned into fall), who knows, maybe that's their plan? Her album is "sad and about her heartbreak from one relationship." Hmmm... I don't care for TS much so I'm gonna stop here!

And since the Olympics aren't in the US or Canada this year, I'm backing 21 for the repeat. But you never know! Teen girls are damn near a force of nature! Lol. It will be really interesting to watch JB's first weeks on sale. He is going to have really high sales the first couple of weeks for sure, which will bring that weekly average down. Closer to 175k per week maybe.
