Some epic tunes here:
Barbra Streisand - 'The Woman In Love'
Always love this track + 'Promises'

Blondie - 'Call Me'
I like Debbie and you know it

1981: only two words. Bucks Fizz.
Most underrated pop group. Always would be in my favourite Top groups with Steps, ABBA, Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Blondie.
Heidi Range - Change Your Wicked Ways
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4XpC8BEE1I
Heidi Range, you are my angel and I love you.

So happy you are finally back with this chart :D :D
And big yeeey for `80s :D :D

From your list love, love, love:
Michael Jackson – Rock With You
Blondie – Call Me
Diana Ross – Upside Down
Olivia Newton John & ELO - Xanadu
Motorhead – Ace Of Spades
The Shadows – Riders In The Sky
Sheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine To Five)
The Spinners - Working My Way Back To You Girl
Irene Cara - Fame
Bob Marley - Could you be loved
Lambrettas - Poison Ivy
Christopher Cross - Ride Like The Wind
The Undertones - My Perfect Cousin

but my 2 top faves are:
Barbra Streisand – Woman In Love
Lipps Inc - FunkyTown

I didn`t know all the songs from your list but I gave them all a listen and was pleasantly suprised with some, so as usual thanx for that.

I`m personally really bad with years and what song is from what year but there are some that I love from 1980 that aren`t on your list, but don`t know should I mention them...

Also there are a lot of 80`s music from EXYU that I love and that are heavily influenced with international music but as I said I`m really bad with years

Looking forward for the next list...

@Nyla, so glad u like my countdown. Which songs u didn't know and u liked?

Of course u can post whatever u like, it would make this page far more interesting... And u do know how much i like ex-YU and 80s music so a combination of the two is especially welcome

As far as time is concerned, I did include in the lists several songs which were initially released in the late 70s and not in 1980 but which became popular in the UK and Europe during 1980. That's the case of most disco songs in the lists and of course the Bob Marley and David Bowie songs.

@AlexZ: That's me... NO lol. That's Prince from the early 80s

Dolly Parton – Old Flames Can`t Hold A Candle To You
Kool And The Gang – Celebration
Abba – Super Trouper
Abba – Lay All Your Love On Me
Abba – The Winner Takes It All
Blondie – Rapture
Blondie – The Tide Is High
Bette Midler – The Rose
Bette Midler – When a Man Loves A woman
Dolly Parton – 9 To 5
Dolly Parton – The House Of The Rising Sun...

I will post some of my faves from Croatian/EXYU music little by little as yours 80s chart goes on (maybe I should open a tread about Croatian/EXYU music  )...

At least one of those songs will be probably appearing in 1981...

The Sheena Easton song, well I first heard it in Czech (and in a drag show from all places lol) and then in English lol

NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE MUSIC & RANDOM ENGLISH-LANGUAGE INDUCTIONS PART 21 of 40

ImageImageImage
So since the countdowns of my two favourite artists of all time are done, time to turn my attention into my favourite songs of all time... So this is how it's gonna look like: There's gonna be 40 different segments (10 songs each) which are gonna focus on one or two different themes each time. It's gonna be either a specific artist focus (and here is where the divas come in) or world music focus or both on the same day (albeit on two separate segments). I am not sure if I am making much sense but it is a chance to look back at some of my favourite songs and acts of all time. All you have to do is say a YES or a NO depending on whether you like the song in question to be inducted in my personal Hall of Fame:

ImageImage
ImageImage

A.OFRA HAZA TOP 10 SINGLES I am running the danger of repeating myself here since I already created a thread for this lady but it would be a shame not to have her here as well. So here she is. Well, Ofra was one of those rare type of artists which managed to trully shine at the international level without having to sing in english. Beginning from the poor neighbourhoods of Israel in the early '80s, she quickly became a national pop sensation but before long, she changed direction and started paying tribute to the music closer to her heart, the music of the wider Middle East. She had Yemeni-Jewish ancestry after all. Her 1983 album "Homeland Songs" will be the first example of that and her 1984 album "Yemenite Songs" will follow suit and will turn her into an international sensation 2 years later, opening the door for her to work with Iggy Pop, Paula Abdul and others. During the '90s, her music will stay as strong as ever, albeit becoming increasingly more melancholic and ambitious. Ofra died of AIDS in 1999, a death which lead to the articulation of many many conspiracy theories, some of which do sound possible. It's needless to say I love her music (even though I can't understand a word lol) and may I also add that I think she was as beautiful as AlexZ thinks Heidi is:)

Image-#1.Shir Hafrecha (The Bimbo Song) (1980)
Because I feel like dancing, I feel like nonsense.
I want to laugh - but you, I don't want!
I feel like it during the day, and at night
I want to scream - I'm a Bimbo

Image-#2.Im Nin' Alu (If The Doors Are Locked) (1984)
original version (1978)
If there be no mercy left in the world,
The doors of heaven will never be barred

Image-#3.Amen Lamilim (Amen For Words) (1983)
And if you return safely from all the wars
And with your good eyes you light up the day
Then together we will silence all the words
With which you loved me, all the time

Image-#4.Simanim Shel Ohavim (Lover's Signs) (1981)

Image-#5.Tfila (Prayer) (1981)
What still remains for us in our days?
What remains all day long?
Sunshine, hope and so many sights
Nights and days of dreams

Image-#6.Chai (Alive) (1983)
My days and nights are full of life,
And in my sky the pillar of fire still rises
I will sing endlessly
I'll spread out my hands
To my friends across the sea

Image-#7.Galbi (1986)
You stole my heart, you stole my soul
You take my breath away, What can I do?
What can I say when you're so far away?

Image-#8.Rachamim (1985)
Everyone whistles to me at the window
But me, I don't hear
My heart is like a telephone
Ringing in the Welfare office
Busy for two months already,
No connection, no lines
And everyone's on their knees

Image-#9.Yad Anuga (Gentle Hand) (1983)
she had black eyes
Light and darkness bump into them
On her forehead light shivers
Dew of childhood is full of glory

Image-#10.Itcha Halaila (With You Tonight) (1984)
You wander among the mountains
You don't know your way.
And in the heights the angels
Sing a song of love to you.
Return to me, in uniform
Into the peace and silence here.
Because only with you, and only with you,
are things good

Of course. When I was younger I was sort of allergic to anything ethnic, I just hated Greek, Balkanic and oriental music in general. But when I moved abroad, I missed it and since then I appreciate it very much. Not everything mind you, but lots of stuff. It's a shame u don't have a fast connection, you might have enjoyed some of them too (don't really think so but who knows? lol)

NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE MUSIC & RANDOM ENGLISH-LANGUAGE INDUCTIONS PART 23 of 40

Image

A.TOP 10 EUROVISION PERFORMANCES FROM THE '90s The '90s can be considered a sort of transitional period in the history of the Eurovision. As communism collapsed in Eastern Europe, more and more countries began to line up to take part in the contest, even as its ratings in Western Europe kept falling. That lead to a series of ever changing participation rules, none of which solved the problem of the existence of too many countries for a TV show. Musically, Ireland won the contest 4 times within the same decade with some of the most boring (in my opinion) winners in the contest ever. Meanwhile countries mostly from the south of Europe began sending more ethnic sounding songs (a trend which constitutes the bright spot of Eurovision in that decade). As the '90s drew to a close though, the no-language restriction rule is introduced leading to the gradual establishment of English as the ESC language of choice . So here are my 10 favourite '90s Eurovision performances. As always you can listen to the song by clicking on its title. Enjoy
