I have a feeling that Lars will be either creating a backup of the site database [which is MASSIVE], he's definitely doing something involving the database, or there's a problem involving the database. At the moment, the database is having issues connecting to the server. Just needs a little redirection!

Is this related to the search function?

I gave up on that a long time ago, for those who don't know, the secret is to go to google and type in:
site:ukmix.org [whatever you are looking for]

On a Wednesday, at a cafe, I watched it begin again.

That usually only happens when your search term returns too many results (though it doesn't always happen).

Try keeping extremely common words like "The", "A" etc out of your search terms; use the "Search for all terms" option instead of the default "Search for any terms or use query as entered"; limit the search to the particular part of the site you expect to find what you're lucking for, ie Chart Analysis, Pure Pop etc.

This will also lead to far better search results.

I've tried not to duplicate possibly existing thread for Babylon Zoo's Spaceman... I think it won't return too many results.

Yeah, the number of duplicate threads is caused by this I suppose.

Oh...

"Babylon Zoo Spaceman" shouldn't have run into overflow issues as a result of the number of hits then so it must have been a genuine server/database error!

The search worked fine for me, just now

Aye - I sometimes get this (as I always use the "View posts since last visit" page). Best bet is to work around it when it happens, and then next time you log in it's normally fine, and might remain fine for another few weeks.

But sometimes one would like to view all the possible topics for a particular word. i.e. I use it to search "albumclash" to make sure I don't repeat any albums.

Sorry but the UKMIX search is the worst I have ever encounted :-?
It would be nice to have an "precise word or phrase" option

Does the server crash if you search for Britney or Mairiah?

As far as I'm aware, I think it is still difficult to specifically search one person's posts (i.e. not your own). That's the one thing that really bugged me about the searching difficulties here.

I think this is why a lot of new posts are started when the subject is out there already. They then get locked. Is it not possibly to mearge them together rather than lock the up?

I think it just makes UKMIX look cluttered when these repeat threads appear all locked. Plus to an ousider it might put someone off joining the site if they think every new person gets the threads locked, for it does happen a lot to them :-?

We can't have people thinking crazy mods can we

^ I think new users shouldn't be able to create new threads until they've made a certain number of posts and been a member for a certain period. By then they should hopefully have learned UKMix etiquette!

(It would also stop those spambots selling DVDs, shoes, games, jewellery, etc...)

So true! I have seen lots of forums where you are not able to open a thread till you have 50/100 posts.
