Unless he's recorded new material for the US, I think he'll struggle for another hit - I mean, he's even a one-hit wonder right now in his homeland. Although he has had considerable recognition in the alternative scene for years now.

Those numbers are so high they make dizzy!

Much congrats to Gotye and Kimbra on a well-deserved #1 hit. :)

Judging from the rest of the album, I think he'll be someone who'll do well as an album artist moreso than a hitmaking singer. He kinda has that Sting/Peter Gabriel feel to his work, and usually that translates more into album sales than pop singles.

Looks as though he's releasing Eyes Wide Open as the next single worldwide methinks, which isn't a great choice - I find that song rather dull. I kinda feel a bit sorry for him since he may never be able to top this tune (although the same thing was kind of said about Hearts A Mess from his previous album, which was the song that made people kind of sit up & take notice here, was a big alternative hit).

As JimJim said, he's still a one-hit wonder here, although he's had a fair bit of recognition in the alternative scene for a long time. He's released 2 albums prior to this one, so this hasn't been a quick road to success at all.

Congratulations Gotye!

I've been a fan since Hearts A Mess - happy to see he has reached this level of success. Finally.

First Australian single to reach #1 in the US since Savage Garden? Is that so?

It's his song, he can say whatever he wants.
If the song was released by anybody else it would have massively flopped.

Nobody even watches Glee anymore. The Voice and SNL helped it just as much.

I am glad he called it out. One thing I hate about Glee versions is the annoying peppy background singers who can turn Bjork into Kids Bop.

I have never watched Glee... what did you mean with the Björk thingy? But I like his comment. I've watched their cover of this song, and it stinks.

He meant that they turn everything into bubblegumish pop, even if the original is far from doing so...
He just used Björk as an example because she usually does music of a high artistic level and Glee could break down even her songs...

haha yes, exactly what I meant. The Glee covers of songs are so bubblegum and cheesy that it sucks all integrity and meaning out of the song, especially with the girl background singers who grate like fingernails. They could do Radiohead or Bjork and the results would still end up sounding like Katy Perry.

He is right though! Most Glee covers are extremely dull and "empty" sounding! :-?

It is the ultimate in disposable fast food. Everyone buys it for a week on iTunes, then next weeks episode comes along and people have moved on to the next thing.
