Life's Greatest Questions: #5 The Crack Debate

So, I'm hoping to bring you a series of stimulating questions about society and polling the UKMix community for a definitive global answer on these oh-so important questions.

QUESTION #1

Does ketchup/tomato sauce belong in the fridge or the cupboard?!

Image

For many years this question has plagued society and caused divorce rates to soar in Western countries. A current poll on Facebook with 200,000 voters goes slightly in favour of the 'fridge' option.

...which I find absolutely shocking, I say the cupboard! I don't know why anyone would want it to be cold, especially since you serve it with hot food. I can assure you McDonalds and the like don't keep in the fridge, so why would I at home?

VOTE.

Ketchup?

It's so full of preservatives that you could leave it out in the sun, cap off, and come back to it six months later and it would still be the same (well, once you removed the fuzzy layer of mould on top).

It will keep perfectly well in the cupboard, but there's nothing wrong with storing it in the fridge, particularly if you've a big fridge with lots of space for such things.

The fridge, sauce tastes better when it's cold.

There's an old saying....hunger is the best sauce.

I always put sauces in my fridge. Even if some sauces can manage to stay in top form in a cupboard, why would you separate your sauces into two like that? Why would you create the added problem of finding a sauce, because it could be in two different places?

I'm just wondering what sauces you have that do need to be stored in the fridge?

Dairy products.

Sour cream, salad cream, salad dressings.

(Yes, I know those may not not technically be sauces, but they're still toppings).

Well, I would recommend keeping all dairy products in the fridge, but salad cream (eurgh!) keeps perfectly well outside the fridge!

Yeah, but once again, why would I separate that from salad dressings?

Lol. I've never thought of it that way, young Sam. I suppose on that logic I should keep my teabags and sugar in the fridge, beside the milk. If I have enough room, I'll also put the cups, saucers, spoons and kettle in there too.

Well, that's taking it a bit too far, isn't it?

Teabags, sugar and coffee should always be together though - directly under the mug cupboard, and perpendicular to the kettle, within reaching distance of the tap.

Shoot. Sounds like I may have to have my kitchen redesigned!

Have you considered the feng-shui implications of all this, by the way?

No, that looks too much effort if I'm honest.

This. For whatever reason ketchup tastes tangier when it's cold.

I've got tomato sauce in the fridge, so I say the fridge is the best place. Don't have every sauce in there though.

Well, we keep ours in the fridge. I don't know why, but we do!

But we also keep other sauces/toppings in there, like mayonnaise and the like too :D

I have it that way. I have some space in my cupboard because I don't have much crockery.

I'm used to putting it in the cupboard in my room so my housemate doesn't use it all
