Honestly, Princess Of China, with all the Rihanna vocals, is still more *rock* than Nickelback, who get more airplay on AC stations more accustomed to Celine and Michael Bolton than on rock/indie stations nowadays.

Not really, listen to Bottoms Up, a recent single.
Typical sub-Metallica hard rock. No one would ever consider moving Nickelback to pop.

I don't understand all of the gripe about this song's genre and about Coldplay "selling out."

This song has way too much of an edge to be pop. As far as I'm concerned, Coldplay are a rock band that appeals to pop audiences.

And Rihanna sounds really nice. Like seriously. I think this is the best she's ever sounded...

Well...I mean it.

Rihanna has NEVER sounded that good. Like her voice was actually beautiful and feminine...at the same time.

I'm so glad it was a Top 20 hit.

If it had more of an edge (less Rihanna, more guitar distortion and more snare), then I think they would've felt confident enough to send it to mainstream and alternative rock formats.
