During her interview with Graham Norton she said that the album was No. 1 in Japan. But it was never No. 1 there, was it?

Maybe it was the international No.-1-album of that week and other albums that sold more were from native artists...

I checked, and it's the case. In week 16 the album rose to #6 on the overall chart following its Japanese official release. There were no other international albums above it then. (It was a very pathetic all-around sales week though, lol).
