148 ¬ Susan Boyle ¬ 173 POINTS

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they turn your hope apart
As they turn your dreams to shame

Susan Magdalane Boyle (born 1 April 1961 in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland) is a Scottish singer who came to international public attention when she appeared as a contestant on reality TV programme Britain’s Got Talent on 11 April 2009, singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables. Her first album was released in November 2009 and debuted as the number one best-selling CD on charts around the globe. Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience’s first impression of her with the standing ovation she received after her performance led to an international media and Internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle — from the show, various interviews, and her 1999 rendition of “Cry Me a River” — had been watched over 100 million times, an online record. Despite the sustained media interest, she later finished in second place in the final of the show, behind dance troupe Diversity. Boyle’s first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released on 23 November 2009, and has become Amazon’s best-selling album in pre-sales. Its first single is a cover of the Jagger/Richards song “Wild Horses.” The album includes “You’ll See,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” and “Cry Me a River.” According to Billboard, “The arrival of “I Dreamed a Dream” … marks the best opening week for a female artist’s debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.”

147 ¬ Billie Holiday ¬ 174 POINTS

Them that's got shall have
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible says and it still is news
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own, that's got his own

Yes the strong get smart
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own, that's got his own

Billie Holiday (Eleanora Fagan Gough, Philadelphia, PA, April 7, 1915 – New York City, NY, July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed Lady Day by her loyal friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Above all, she was admired for her deeply personal and intimate approach to singing. Critic John Bush wrote that she “changed the art of American pop vocals forever. ” She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably “God Bless the Child,” “Don’t Explain,” and “Lady Sings the Blues.” She also became famous for singing jazz standards written by others, including “Easy Living” and “Strange Fruit.” Billie Holiday had a difficult childhood, which greatly affected her life and career. Not much is known about the true details of her early life, though stories of it appeared in her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues, first published in 1956 and later revealed to contain many inaccuracies. Her professional pseudonym was taken from Billie Dove, an actress she admired, and Clarence Holiday, her probable father. At the outset of her career, she spelled her last name “Halliday”, presumably to distance herself from her neglectful father, but eventually changed it back to “Holiday”.

Brandy (my #19) is one of the greatest modern day R&B acts. Afrodisiac, Full Moon, Never Say Never are amazing albums.

Billie Holiday (my #7) is very underrated. That voice is so haunting and full of eerie passion.

Spice Girls are great but I didn't vote for any bands.

Although I believe that Billie Holiday (along with Nina Simone) is one of the best voices I've ever listened in my life, passionate, strong, amazing, I did not vote for her because (and that's a real shame) I never follow her music.
Susan Boyle is a great voice too, didn't make it to my list too because she does not have original discography.
I am sky and here.

Billie 8-)

How spooky that Brandy turns up after all the Whitney stuff. She was in a 1997 TV production of Cinderella with Whitney playing her fairy godmother. It was due to be on BBC2 today but they replaced it with a 1965 version. I was looking forward to seeing it. :-?

MAJOR catch up needed this end! :o

Tori Amos
She's really really interesting - but I don't know that much of her stuff.

Pussycat Dolls
"Jai Ho" was great - but aside from that, totally not my thing - a number of songs I find awful even!

Willow Smith
Sorry Adam, but huh??? She's only HAD one UK single, and that song had a chorus comprising of a tunless "I whip my hair back and forth" over and over again. I'm amazed people voted for her, I can only hope that her other stuff is far better than the UK single!

Nina Simone
Classic singer - I don't know enough of her stuff really.

Missy Elliott
Lauryn Hill
Eve
Brandy
Let's answer these four together. Missy is incredibly hit or miss for me - her early stuff was great, her later stuff less so. Eve I barely know, Brandy's a great singer, but her songs have been patchy to say the least. Lauryn's a hip hop legend, but has far too little material!

Kate Nash
Aye - she's okay - but there's better out there for me.

Diana Ross
Now THIS is what you call a legend! Ashamedly I didn't vote her - because I took my votes from a chart based on my ultimate all time favourite songs - and however many songs Diana has put out, few are really ultimate favourites for me. No denying she is a legend though!

Jill Scott
Great singer - don't know enough of her stuff.

Spice Girls
I'm amazed just HOW low they land! Not really my thing - but yeah, I expected them to do better here.

Susan Boyle
The ultimate Britain's Got Talent star - despite not actually winning her show! She deserves a top 200 placing for sure.

Billie Holiday
A true musical icon - though I don't know enough of her stuff really!

55. Macy Gray
Came very close to my votes. I own "On How Life Is" and it's great. A very unique voice.

46. Cyndi Lauper
VERY glad to see her in the top 100 - fantastic voice and some great songs. That big party song is really overrated though!

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need To see me through

Sometimes it seems that the going is just too rough

Florence Welch is regarded as amongst the most talented British female artists of the decade, possessing a very distinctive, and powerful instrument that has been praised by critics the world over. The majority of her work is with Florence and the Machine. Welch charts here based on her tiny solo output, but an educated guess would tell you that it is her work as the vocalist in Florence and the Machine that decided her placing here! She could rank even higher next time!

She is the daughter of Evelyn Welch, a Professor of Renaissance Studies and Academic Dean for Arts at Queen Mary, University of London and author and formerly a Studio 54 regular, and Nick Welch, who works in advertising. Welch says she is prone to “falling into severe holes” that leave her crying on the floor. Welch has been diagnosed with dyslexia and dysmetria. Welch would like to have a career similar to PJ Harvey and Björk who are “constantly creating new exciting stuff”. At age 13 Welch found solace in the music of Hole, Nirvana, Green Day, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, The Velvet Underground and Celine Dion. As a teenager she was the frontwoman for Toxic Cockroaches and Ashok. Feeling she was in “the wrong band” she got out of a contract with Ashok by resigning.

Whilst doing Florence's little write up, and looking for some pictures, I realised that she's probably the sexiest ginger woman I've ever seen.

Jessie J burst on to the pop scene seemingly out of nowhere. But don't be fooled - this woman has been in the music industry for longer than two years, a lot longer actually. This being said, she has achieved the majority of her success with her first album Who You Are, which was years in the making, and like the likes of Adele, Duffy and the late Amy Winehouse, she was a British female star that cracked the US market, in a big way! This represents a debut for Jessie, as she received votes from 30 different voters!

Combining the vocal prowess of Beyoncé, the genre-hopping sounds of Gwen Stefani, and the feisty attitude of P!nk, songwriter Jessie J eventually overcame various career setbacks and health problems to become a star in her own right. Born Jessica Cornish in Chadwell Heath, London in 1988, she started her career in showbiz at the age of 11, performing in the West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind. After studying musical theater at the prestigious BRITS School, she signed a deal with indie label Gut Records, which went bankrupt before releasing any of her music. Following a minor stroke at age 18, she gained a Sony publishing contract and penned hits for the likes of Chris Brown, Dutch X Factor winner Lisa Lois, and Miley Cyrus (the American number two hit "Party in the USA"). After building up an established online presence, she signed to Universal Records and began working with the likes of hitmaker Dr. Luke (Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson), Atlanta rapper B.o.B, and R&B producer Labrinth on her debut album, Who You Are. In 2010, her first single, "Do It Like a Dude," originally written for Rihanna, reached number 25 in the U.K. charts and, following in the footsteps of Adele, Florence and the Machine, and Ellie Goulding, she was announced as the winner of the Critics Choice Award at the 2011 Brits. That same year, an appearance on Saturday Night Live coincided with her album being reissued in the U.S.

I have grown - in time - to love Jessie J! Who You Are is a terrific album, with some brilliant song choices.

I find Florence Welch to be overrated. She has a beautiful tone when she just sings, but I don't like how much she shrieks when she belts.
