A new year and a new thread! And before we get down to business a few links and some background information......

The Irish chart is revealed online every Friday afternoon and covers sales between Friday and Thursday. Since the beginning of 2007 the main sales chart has included all physical and download sales as in the UK. The main charts are the singles chart (a Top 50), the artist albums chart (a Top 100), the compilation album chart (a Top 30) and the download-only chart (a Top 20). The first 3 of these can be found at www.irma.ie while www.chart-track.com carries the Top 50 singles, Top 75 Artist albums, Top 20 compilations and Top 20 downloads along with weekly commentaries. A weekly airplay chart is compiled by Neilsen but since the middle of 2008 this has been unavailable to the public. During 2009 IRMA also started publishing the Indie Album Chart - initially a Top 20 but this was reduced to a Top 10 after a couple of weeks and returning to a Top 20 again in April 2010 which has continued to publish.

Traditionally the Irish chart was broadcast on the national pop station 2FM (the Irish equivalent of Radio 1 in the UK!). From the beginning of 2FM back in May 1979 this was normally in the form of a 2 hour show though the format and days and times regularly changed. However at the start of 2010 the show was axed without explanation. For a while they continued to carry the charts on their website but a revamp of the site saw that feature removed. For the last 2 years there was no year end chart on 2FM - 31st December 2010 saw a 2 hour show playing the number 1 singles of the year adding the download chart and artist album chart no 1s of the week and this year there was absolutely nothing. It is most probable that they have lost the rights to broadcast the chart.

However the chart show lives on elsewhere in the form of "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" (Ireland's Official Top 40). This is a weekly programme presented entirely in the Irish language by Daithi O'Daibhin. It is produced by a company called Digital Audio Productions which ironically was set up by former 2FM presenter Dusty Rhodes. It is syndicated across a handful of stations who seem to broadcast it at different times over the weekend. There is a list of stations carrying the show on wikipedia but this seems to be inaccurate as some of them don't have it listed in their current schedules. What follows is a list of stations which I could find as at 1st January 2012 along with times and links to listen. Unless otherwise stated this would be the "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" syndicated programme.

Update: 16th January 2011

An update on the links to the stations broadcasting the chart shows..... I have put Midwest Radio back as they now seem to be broadcasting the official chart again.

And LMFM has been removed as there is no chart show at the time listed. So the up to date schedule is as follows....

Friday

18:00 - 20:00 on Radio Ri-Ra ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")
22:00 - 23:0 on Midwest Radio THE HOT HITS HOUR AS GAEILGE (Brendan Roache is in the hotseat counting down Ireland's Official Top 40 as Gaeilge)

Saturday

18:00 - 20:00 on Radio Ri-Ra ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")

Sunday

10:00 - 12:00 Red FM ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")
18:00 - 20:00 on Radio Ri-Ra ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")
18:45 - 20:45 on Spin 103.8 and Spin Southwest (Hit 30 na hÉireann)
21:00 - 23:00 on Galway Bay FM (Despite being listed as Ireland's Top 30 Singles & Albums on their website it is actually "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann"). There is also a possibilty that it is on at the same time on Saturdays.
22:00 - 00:00 Beat 102-103 ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")

If anyone has any additions / corrections to the above list please let me know and I will update it

For full archive charts from January 2000 onwards I would recommend the chart-track website as it contains all the weekly charts since then. The irma website seems to have added an archive section which can be found at http://www.irma.ie/charts_archive/overview.asp though this only seems to cover the Top 50 singles and artist albums of 2007 at present. The irma site also contains year end Top 20s since 2001. Also worth checking out is www.irishcharts.ie which contains a fully searchable singles database going right back to 1962 when the first recognised chart was compiled (though there was a Top 10 published regularly from 1959). It is restricted to Top 30 hits but seems to be updated on a regular basis. This site also contains various other facts and figures and does have a certifications section though this is rather limited in content. Sales info is extremely hard to come by for Ireland and the only details that seem to appear are those mentioned from time to time in the chart-track commentary. No certifications are published in Ireland until the entire list of possible certifications for the previous year been submitted and verified. This list is published only once a year and refers always to trade deliveries made up to the end of the previous calendar year. Therefore, the 2009 certifications were published in 2010 - the 2010 certifications were published in 2011 and the 2011 certifications won't be published until an unknown date later in 2012. This takes time. Going by previous years it is typically March when the list is published. It could be (much) later, but it's unlikely to be earlier. They may forget about it and not publish it immediately when it is ready. But it will eventually be published. Please be patient. There is no point asking when the certifications will be known - but as soon as they are, they will be posted here.

Many pre-2000 singles charts were posted on the UKMix forums back in 2006. Links to these and other Irish chart related topics can be found below

The Year End Charts of 2011

The following is the Top 20 chart posted on the IRMA website. The chart broadcast on "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" on New Years Day 2012 differs slightly and appears to be the Top 40 excluding sales from the final week of the year. If and when I get any further positions or any album charts I will update this.

I have posted the Top 17 artist albums with the Now titles added in bold where they slot into the combined chart.

Finally I'm going to repeat this in large, bold type though no doubt someone will ask anyway.....

Sales info is extremely hard to come by for Ireland and the only details that seem to appear are those mentioned from time to time in the chart-track commentary.

Chart Track Commentary

The first Album Chart of 2012 sees Adele return to the summit with ‘21’, nearly a year since the album was released in late January 2011. During this period ‘21’ has now spent a phenomenal thirty weeks at No1 and has never dipped lower than No8.

With hefty price promotion in-store and on-line, Bruno Mars climbs from No12 to No2 with ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ – the fifth best-seller of 2011 and a former No1. Olly Murs climbs a place to complete the Top 3 with ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ giving him his highest placing in the Album Chart to date. With no significant new releases this week, the remainder of the Top 40 is characterised by resurgent 2011 best-sellers – most notably Jessie J (up from No21 to No10), Lady Gaga (up from No26 to No14), Katy Perry (up from No39 to No19) and Nicki Minaj (a re-entry at No17). One notable absentee from this week’s Top 30 is Michael Bublé, whose ‘Christmas’ album takes a record-breaking plummet from No1 to No60.

The previous three X Factor winners Matt Cardle, Joe McElderry and Alexander Burke all spent exactly four weeks at No1 on the Singles Chart following their victories, and this week Little Mix emulate the success of their predecessors by taking a fourth week at the top with ‘Cannonball’. Olly Murs continues to mount a challenge, up from No3 to No2 with ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ – also gaining his highest-ever position on this chart. Rihanna & Calvin Harris climb a place to No3 after 14 weeks in the Top 10 with ‘We Found Love’ while Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’ drops two places to No4. There’s only one new entry in this week’s Top 30 – JLS with ‘Do You Feel What I Feel?’ at No29, their ninth hit single in Ireland.

Shaky Fan's Commentary

As well as Michael Buble's drop in the album chart there is another huge fall for a Christmas hit over on the singles chart with Ryan Sheridan dropping out of the Top 50 from no 8.

WOW, what a huuuuuge drop... I think it's quite surprising because Michael's drop wasn't that bad in the USA or in the UK (which has a similiar music market than Ireland).

Nice to see Video Games back in the top 10 :D ... Wasn't No. 9 also its peak?

Amazing longevity for LMFAO and Adele :o !

Do Little Mix have a physical single out or why are they still No. 1 despite being No. 5 on the Download Chart?

---

Surprised to see 21 back at No. 1 again :o - that an album that was already sold in such huge numbers is still No. 1 is already incredible... At which position on the all-time-chart is it now? And which album was the last one to be No. 1 as late as the 50th week?

To see Imelda May back in the top 10 in Mayhem's 70th charting week is really notable ... And also that her 3-year-old debut album outsells the newest competition with ease!

In general, I think Ireland is the place where albums are having the biggest longevity... In nearly no other place, you see so much old albums charting!
Is there a certain reason for that?

@Shakyfan: I'm a bit sad that you didn't answer my latest question... I've been looking forward to it but there's been no reaction from your side...

The Irish market is a lot smaller than the other 2 you mention so a small increase or decrease in sales will have a much bigger effect in the chart.

Video Games actually peaked at number 7! The full chart run so far is 36 13 09 10 07 09 08 13 10 14 13 19 09

There is a CD version of Cannonball - the X Factor winners single is one of the few that can be guaranteed a large amount of physical sales these days.

It now seems clear, unfortunately, that, with effect from a few weeks ago, they have replaced the official chart countdown on Friday evenings with some kind of listeners-votes top ten!

There was nothing remotely like the scheduled official chart show programme at the times stated for LM FM or Galway Bay FM either, when I last checked them out, quite recently.....

@Shakyfan: So just a little promotion can make you easily get a high chart position in Ireland, can't it?
Is anything else needed to charted as long as possible (3 years or more)?

Looks like I have a lot of editing to do now!

Tuned in to Midwest around 10:25 to hear what was obviously not the official chart - I notice they still have it listed as "Brendan Roache is in the hotseat counting down Ireland's Official Top 40 as Gaeilge."

Can we just forget about the Imelda May albums? You were given possible answers to your questions in the 2011 thread but they don't seem to be good enough for you. There's nothing more to say at this stage and its getting silly now.....

Do you at least know at which position on the all-time-chart 21 is now?

To answer the last 2 questions.

1. Unfortunately there are no all-time charts known and I have never even seen an attempt at guessing. Even with singles the best we have is a Top 20 on the irishcharts.ie website and that only covers the period since Gallup started compiling the official charts in the early 90s and the most recent update appears to have been in 2009. I'd be interested to see any such charts myself actually - if anyone ever finds such information please post a link here.

2. As with the weekly charts figures are impossible to find. Unless something turns up on the weekly chart-track commentaries we'll probably never know.

Just done a quick bit of research. The IFPI publish an annual report - "Recording Industry In Numbers". It includes

•Country-level data for 50 territories, including*:
Splits for physical, digital and performance rights revenues.
Physical and digital sales volume.
Digital indicators (internet, broadband, portable players, mobile subscriptions and smartphone penetration)
Global top 50 independent labels, top selling albums, chart compiler

The 2011 edition is now available BUT THIS COVERS THE YEARS 2006-2010. For 2011 you would have to wait for the 2012 edition available from late summer.

It doesn't come cheap - this year's full report (hard copy and PDF version) which includes a free copy of last year's report will set you back £750. It is also possible to request pages for indiviual countries but even this is £150 per country. A sample page (for Denmark) can be seen through the ifpi website. http://www.ifpi.org/content/library/RIN ... rypage.pdf

You can order it here: http://www.ifpi.org/content/section_res ... rsions.asp

I sometimes don't get your questions, Timmy.
Irish charts don't have rules delegating old albums into any sort of catalog / bargain charts thus they still perform well as long as there's interest in them. It's normal that most of greatest hits collections have a long chart life as they're handy gifts to offer to practically every target group of music lovers.

Sometimes you just can't list reasons of why some albums are popular and others are not. Imelda May is simply getting recognition, she's a local act here and has a lot of stocks in stores, her albums are very cheap and people seem to like them, that's it. A little promotion can indeed lead to high positions in the chart but it's not necessarily the case every single time. Like all small markets, the Irish one is slightly easier to manipulate from the marketing point of view but it doesn't mean that you'll instantly be number one after performing on X Factor.

The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) release figures in April which gives these figures. ERA covers both Ireland and the UK and their annual report contains figures for both markets.

The figures for the past 5 years (2006 to 2010) for Ireland have been:

2006:

Physical Singles: 1.26m
Digital Singles: 1.98m

Total: 3.24m

2007:

Physical Singles: 0.87m
Digital Singles: 3.747m

Total: 4.61m

2008:

Physical Singles: 0.55m
Digital Singles: 4.83m

Total: 5.83m

2009:

Physical Singles: 0.29m
Digital Singles: 5.64m

Total: 5.93m

2010:

Physical Singles: 0.10m
Digital Singles: 6.20m

Total: 6.3m

Album sales for Ireland:

2006:

Physical: 10.43m
Digital: 0.16m

Total: 10.59m

2007:

Physical: 9.31m
Digital: 0.32m

Total: 9.63m

2008:

Physical: 8.09m
Digital: 0.51m

Total: 8.6m

2009:

Physical: 6.93m
Digital: 0.66m

Total: 7.59m

Unfortunately I don't have any figures for 2010.

@maroon: Thanks for the answer... My interest in Imelda May's doing is just because her albums are having such an unusual chart performance and it happens perhaps 1 in 1000 cases that an old album is charting over a currently promoted album and even on the Irish Charts, Florence & the Machine, Adele or Lady Gaga aren't doing so (regularly) so that shows that it's really something special.

---

Another question: Ireland has an official certification system for singles. But I only know a site which certifies albums once in a year... Someone knows about singles?

Gonna try to do this every week (probably on Sunday evenings!). It's a podcast of "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann" which I plan to upload to You Tube.

Update: 9th January 2011

An update on the links to the stations broadcasting the chart shows..... I have removed Midwest Radio as it appears that they no longer count down the official charts but instead they use their own listener compiled Top 10. I missed LM FM's scheduled programme on Saturday evening so will leave that one in for now. On the assumption (for now) that it is correct this is when you can catch the Chart show online.....

Friday

18:00 - 20:00 on Radio Ri-Ra ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")

Saturday

18:00 - 20:00 on Radio Ri-Ra ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")
22:00 - 00:00 on LM FM

Sunday

07:50 - 09:50 Beat 102-103 ("Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann")

Chart Track Commentary

A Good Feeling For Flo Rida

Despite having dropped out of the Top Ten on the Singles Chart in Christmas week Flo Rida’s ‘Good Feeling’ continues its subsequent turnaround climbing right to the top of the Chart from last week’s No5 - giving Flo Rida his fifth appearance on a No1 track in Ireland.

Olly Murs has to be content with holding on to the No2 spot for a second week while Little Mix drop to No4 with ‘Cannonball’ ending their four week reign at the top.

With nine artists acheiving at least four weeks at No1 in the last year, 2011 saw artists holding on to the top spot for significantly longer than in 2010 – with only 16 different tracks topping the chart in 2011 compared to 25 different tracks in 2010. This week’s Chart sees a few heathly climbers as Jessie J leaps 32 places to enter the Top 10 at No3 – her best performance since topping the Chart last February with ‘Price Tag’. Rizzle Kicks jump 27 places with ‘Mama Do The Hump’ to enter the Top 20 at No17 while Taio Cruz takes ‘Troublemaker’ up 21 places to enter the Top 30 at No25.

Adele again heads this week’s Album Chart in a Top 10 line-up of artists unchanged since last week. In a slight shuffling of position Olly Murs moves up a place from No3 to No2 with ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’, Coldplay’s ‘Mylo Xyloto’ moves up a place from No4 to No3 while Florence + The Machine climb with ‘Ceremonials’ – up to No5 from No6. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds see their self-titled debut move up 29 places back into the Top 20 at No18 while the sole new entry in this week’s Chart belongs to The Maccabees whose third album release ‘Given To The Wild’ enters the chart at No31 – their first appearance on the Irish Album Chart.

It now seems clear, unfortunately, that, with effect from a few weeks ago, they have replaced the official chart countdown on Friday evenings with some kind of listeners-votes top ten!
And, would you believe it.....this week they returned to the real, official top ten - nothing at all replaced or shifted around! Maybe - and hopefully - the last few weeks were just an experiment that failed, and normal service has now been resumed.....
