10 ¬ If I Were A Boy

Image

"If I were a boy, I think I'll turn off my phone.. tell everyone that it's broken, so they'd think that I was sleeping alone."

The lead single from the "I Am..." side of "I Am... Sasha Fierce". This track divides opinions among Bey fans - some really love it and some really dislike it (due to it being too bland). The simpleness of the song is what makes me like this song so much - IMO it is amazing and one of Bey's best ballads ever. "If I Were A Boy" should have been replaced by "Halo" as the first single though. The music video for this song is great, and the lyrics are really very true. Even though I am a male myself, I have to agree that we males do the things mentioned in the lyrics sometimes!

9 ¬ Start Over

Image

"Maybe we reached the mountain peak, and there's no more left to climb. Maybe we lost the magic piece, and we're both too blind to find..."

One of the best non-singles from "4" imo. A beautifully crafted tune, it was not one of the highlights to me on the first listens of the album - in fact, I thought this track was a filler one. My opinion of this song has gradually changed since then. An excellent ballad with mature lyrics. Most fans seem to find this track decent too, so I'm glad it's recognized as that. However, despite its epicness, I don't think it should be released as a single as it doesn't have the radio-friendly formula. A video should be released for this song though, just to satisfy the fans of this tune.
----------------------------------------------------
In the next batch of two, one more poll option will fall -- and it may be a shocker, too. I'll give a brief summary of the songs remaining:

Four (:o) tracks from "4" remain in the top eight.
One collaboration is in the top eight.
One non-single left in the top eight.
Three up-tempos left in the top eight.

The rest of the results will be revealed in due course. 8-)

'If I were a boy' is untouchable in its simplicity, you said it all.

'Start over' is good, but gets annoying really fast.

"If I Were A Boy" is a brilliant song, lyrically and vocally. It was a great lead single, in my opinion. 9.5/10

"Start Over" is even better. It's definitely one of her best album tracks ever, certainly Top 10-worthy. 9.5/10

8 ¬ End Of Time

Image

"Come take my hand, I won't let you go, I'll be your friend, I will love you so deeply..."

I was so happy when I read that this was going to be the next single in the US and UK. I was really expecting something extremely epic when I saw full praise for this song by the fans. I was not disappointed. It was just as epic as I expected it to be. Definitely one of the standouts from "4". I've already gotten bored of this song, though I believe I'll get into this song again once its officially released as a proper single with a proper music video. This single better save the "4" era - it's just too epic to be neglected by radio. This track is undoubtedly one of Bey's best uptempos, and I believe it will become one of her signature tunes (provided it gets the attention "Single Ladies" received).

7 ¬ Run The World (Girls)

Image

"Who run this motha?"

Bey's best uptempo lead single. It's so wrongly hated by the general public and fans alike. This tune is epic. It's so different from the "hot" tracks right now and deserved to be a much much bigger hit than it was, especially in the US. Peaking at #29 is a crime, imo. This song is certainly a grower for many people, including me. Its now my most-played lead single from Bey. The music video for this single is great but a tad overrated though. Her live performances of this song slays. The Billboard Music Awards one will go down in history as one of Beyoncé's best ever live performances - the choreography, the lightings and her voice are just perfect. And to think she was pregnant during that performance! :o

"End of Time" is pretty epic but it's one of those Bey songs that get annoying if you overplay them. 9/10

"Run The World (Girls)" is epic once you give it a few months to grow on you. The music video is easily one of my faves from her. 9.5/10

If I Were a Boy is one of B's best ballads. <3
End of Time and Run The World are both okay, but far from Beyonce's best.

6 ¬ Irreplaceable

Image

"To the left, to the left, everything you own in the box to the left..."

One of Beyoncé's best ballads. In fact, only two (or three to some of you) outclasses this epic track. This track is extremely deserving of its 11-week run atop the Hot 100. I'm really glad it saved the "B'Day" era. Despite being a fan-favourite, very few rank this in their top 10 Beyoncé songs ever. This track is a classic - easily her most well-known tune worldwide (along with "Crazy In Love" and "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"). Another poll options fall here, leaving only two to compete for the top spot. The music video is great too, but is far from being her best.

5 ¬ Telephone (with Lady GaGa)

Image

"Stop callin', stop callin', I don't wanna talk anymore.. I left my head and my heart on the dancefloor..."

Being both a Gaga and Beyoncé fan, I adore this song. I know this isn't exactly a Beyoncé track, but it's just too epic for me to exclude this from the countdown. It's by far one of the best collaborations of the decade (2000-2009) and is one of the best songs by both artists. An EPIC video, ranks among Beyoncé's top 3 videos and Gaga's best video ever. I love Beyoncé's rap in the song and that part is the highlight of the song for me. Much better than "Video Phone" and I'm anticipating the sequel to the video. This is the last collaboration on this countdown.

#4 and #3 tomorrow. 8-)

"Irreplaceable" is amazing. I remember hearing it non-stop in 2006/2007. 10/10

"Telephone" was an epic duet and Bey's rap verse was easily the highlight of the song. 10/10

4 ¬ Love On Top

Image

"Finally you put my love on top!"

The baby anthem. This song IMO brought about one of the most defining performances in Beyoncé's career. The VMA performance was certainly flawless. Believe it or not, I would have never ranked this track inside my top 15 at all when I heard the album version of this song. When she performed at the VMAs though, everything changed. It became my jam for about two weeks; and slowly became the most-played song from "4". That performance is, by far, my favourite live performance of ANY artist last year. This track is so beautiful and will surely be the most remembered song from "4". It just narrowly misses out on the top 3, however. There's no doubting its epicness though and Beyoncé's vocals in the last few verses slay. Her best vocal showcase so far in her career.

3 ¬ Listen

Image

"I am alone at a crossroads, I'm not at home in my own home.."

At number-three is the highest ranking song from "B'Day" or of any soundtrack. "Listen" is by far her most undeserved flop ever. This track is SO amazing and the lyrics are somewhat relatable to at times. This track was pretty much always in my top 5 Bey songs since its release (2006). 6 years, and it's still in the top 3 just proves how much of a classic this is. IMO I feel that no other rendition does this song justice as Bey's emotions is the most one can ask for in this song. Despite this song having many belting parts, I feel that to pull this song off is not about technique - it's more of the soulfulness, and the emotions that Bey sings that makes this song a gem - one that can touch people's hearts. This track is surely one of the best movie songs of all-time, and will always be one of my favourite songs ever.

"Love On Top" is incredible. Much like you, I didn't really get into it until the VMA performance. Then, it became known as the baby anthem and I gave it a second chance and it just grew on me. It's definitely one of the standout tracks from 4. 9.5/10

"Listen" is amazing. No, it's better than amazing, it's absolutely phenomenal! Bey's vocals are so strong on the track and like you mentioned, the lyrics are very relatable across all age groups. This should have been a #1 hit everywhere, alas it flopped. One of my fave Bey songs as well. 10/10

2 ¬ Halo

Image

Remember those walls I built?
Well baby they're tumbling down,
And they didn't even put up a fight,
They didn't even make a sound.

I found a way to let you in,
But I never really had a doubt.
Standing in the light of your Halo,
I got my angel now.

It's like I've been awakened,
Every rule I had you breaking,
It's the risk that I'm taking,
I ain't never gonna shut you out...

Words can't express the epicness of this track to me and I'm amazed at just how Bey's voice manages to blend in beautifully and wonderfully with the tune and lyrics of the song. This, to me, is the highest level a singer can get - really spreading the emotions of the songs to the listeners. This masterpiece is by far my favourite ballad Bey has ever done - and by a long mile. This is also undoubtedly one of Bey's so-called "power ballads" as it's one of the few songs she showcases her amazing vocal range. "If I Were A Boy" is epic enough and I find this better than that. This just proves my rating for this song. I believe it would have a bigger hit if released as the lead single, though. This song truly made me a Beyoncé fan, and will always be in my top three Beyoncé songs, no matter how many albums she will be releasing in the future. The music video for this song is great too. This song is such a pleasure to the ears and never fails to cheer me up if I feel down (weird, I know). A wonderfully-crafted masterpiece, this flawless tune is my number-two Beyoncé song of all-time, and will remain so in the top-three for (probably) years to come.

1 ¬ I Was Here

Image

I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time,
Know there was something that, and something that I left behind.

When I leave this world, I'll leave no regrets,
Leave something to remember so they won't forget
I Was Here......

I lived, I loved, I Was Here.....
I did, I've done, everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be,
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I Was Here....

I wanna say I lived each day until I die,
and know that I did something in somebody's life..
The hearts I have touched will be the proof that I lived
That I made a difference and this world will see
I Was Here...

It was tough deciding my number-one and number-two - both songs really have true meanings to me. This song, is by far, her most personal track so far (to me). It also has lyrics that is very relatable to everyone's lives and that truly marks a great song. I was certain that this song would be my number-one when I made this countdown, and it indeed is. Words just cannot describe when I first heard this track. I literally wanted to cry as I really felt every word she sang in the song. This has always been my favourite track off "4" since its release. This, to me, isn't just a masterpiece - it is LIFE. So inspirational, this song never ceases to amaze me no matter how many times I listen to this song. I doubt I will ever get bored of this track as it's just too fantastic. I just cannot describe this song in words - it just evokes some feelings in me that only a few other songs can. This is by far her greatest song of all-time (even though some may disagree). Heartbreak, disappointment, happiness, excitement, anger - this song is just fitting for almost every mood. I don't know why, but this song can be the theme song of my life thus far. This song ranks in my top 20 (probably top 15) songs of all-time. If "Halo" was rated 10 on a scale of 1-10, this song will certainly exceed the scale by miles for me. The lyrics and maturity of this song was what differentiated "Halo" from this, and was a deciding factor for my number-one Beyoncé song of all-time.

And here we are at the end of the countdown. I want to thank all of you for commenting on this countdown and it was a serious pleasure to share my favourite Beyoncé songs with you guys. I hope most of you enjoyed this countdown as well and even though some rankings may be controversial, I appreciate the fact that no wars were started in this thread. I believe that all of us have different Beyoncé tastes and I'm looking forward to more Beyoncé countdowns in the future. :)

Nice countdown!

Comparing the three ballads, I guess I prefer Halo and Listen over your number #1, but I'm looking forward to know (and I bet you are too) the next move B will take regarding the BIG ballad from the next album.

Or even from the A Star is born sundtrack :D

"Halo" is a great song. It's actually my mom's favourite song from Beyoncé. I love the verses and the chorus is great too. At one point, my best friend was obsessed with this song. So, with both my mom and my best friend (and now that I think about it, my sister too) being in love with this song, it's pretty fair to say that this has been overplayed around me. 9.5/10

"I Was Here" is such a deserving #1! I totally get what you mean when you say you felt like crying when you first heard it. It really is that epic! I think that it's actually one of the definitive songs of Beyoncé's catalogue as it really speaks as to what she wants her legacy to be. And yes, Beyoncé, generations after us will know that you were here. 10/10

Brilliant countdown, from start to finish. Though I may have ranked one or two songs differently, your tribute has come to an incredible end. Now, I can't wait 'til I get home to play "I Was Here".
