What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane, and if so, isn't that better than a life of despair?

In Germany, movies are ranked by viewers and not by gross...
Can the numbers be posted here, too?

Great idea. :D
Weekend forecast (per Box Office Mojo):
Weekend Forecast (March 16-18)
1. 21 Jump Street - $32.5 million
2. The Lorax - $24.9 million (-36%)
3. John Carter - $15.1 million (-50%)
4. Project X - $5.2 million (-53%)
5. Act of Valor - $3.8 million (-46%)
I'm hoping 'Friends With Kids' maintains some good numbers with this weekend's expansion.
And I hope 'Kid With A Bike' does solid business in it's limited release. I've just seen it and really enjoyed it, I highly recommend it. :D

You can check the German box office results (in dollars) on Box Office Mojo's website.
Link
I assume 'Ziemlich beste Freunde' is The Intouchables, the French film that has been wreaking havoc on the box office charts, already making 270 million dollars, in Europe alone (and it hasn't even opened in all European territories, just around 10 of them).
So far it grossed 166 million in France, and 62 million in Germany. :o
Can't wait to see how it does in the other major markets. :D :D

It's currently at 6.7 mio. viewers (which is already breaking last year's most-seen movie Harry Potter 7.2 which had 6.4 mio. viewers) and it takes 7.4 mio. viewers to reach the all-time-list, so as it just had another 200k+ viewers last week, it'll get there soon  .

Forecast: 'Hunger Games' Targets Record Books
by Ray Subers
The Hunger Games

March 22, 2012

Happy Hunger Games, indeed.

The big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' international best-seller finally hits theater on Friday, and it's riding a wave of anticipation unheard of for the first movie in a prospective series. The Hunger Games is set to play on at least 10,000 screens at 4,137 locations, which is the widest release ever for a non-sequel and for a movie released by a non-major studio (in this case, it's from mid-major studio Lionsgate). With pre-sales at nearly-unprecedented levels, it now looks like a foregone conclusion that The Hunger Games will score one of the top openings in movie history.

With over 24 million copies in worldwide circulation, The Hunger Games has drawn abundant comparisons to the Twilight series: both The Hunger Games and Twilight are extremely popular genre-oriented young adult franchises that feature a love triangle between a female protagonist and two hunky suitors. That's about the extent of the association, though. While romance is the main focus in Twilight, in The Hunger Games it takes a backseat to an action-packed survival story set in a dystopian future. Thanks to these sci-fi elements, The Hunger Games has appealed to young men in a way that Twilight never really could.

Without mincing words, this is by far Lionsgate's biggest release ever—their current highest-grossing movie is Michael Moore documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 at $119.2 million, which is a figure that The Hunger Games could legitimately eclipse within its first three days in theaters. Largely due to expectations that The Hunger Games will be a massive hit, Lionsgate's stock price has risen 75 percent so far this year, which indicates just how much the company has riding on this title.

Considering what's at stake, Lionsgate has executed about as well as one could expect here. They hired a reputable director (Gary Ross of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville) and an Oscar-nominated up-and-coming star (Jennifer Lawrence), and shot a reportedly faithful adaptation on a budget under $80 million after tax rebates. Lionsgate then spent a light $45 million on prints and advertising that focused almost exclusively on the events that occur prior to the games in order to set up the high stakes without revealing too much. The icing on the cake is the surprisingly strong reviews—as of Thursday afternoon, it's at 87 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes—which should help generate additional ticket sales from more discerning adult audiences.

So, how high can The Hunger Games open? Industry tracking is showing incredibly high levels of interest across all ages and both genders, with the greatest interest obviously coming from younger women (though young men aren't really far behind). According to Fandango, it has sold out over 2,500 showtimes and currently ranks as the third-highest advanced ticket seller ever behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Those movies opened to $142.8 million and $169.2 million, respectively, and were both highly-anticipated sequels.

Based on the information available, The Hunger Games should open higher than 2010's Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million), which will give it the top opening ever for a January-April release and also the best debut for a non-sequel. The big question is whether it can pass The Twilight Saga: New Moon's $142.8 million opening (best in the Twilight franchise)—while that is entirely possible, I'm going to play it a little safer with a forecast below $140 million.

The Hunger Games is also opening in at least two-thirds of the international marketplace, and should wind up scoring over $200 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign) this weekend.

Even though all of the attention is going to be on The Hunger Games this weekend, Toronto International Film Festival sensation The Raid: Redemption also opens in at least 13 locations in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington D.C. Sony Pictures Classics has an extensive roll-out planned for the action-packed martial arts movie over the next few weeks, and with strong word-of-mouth it could wind up becoming one of the bigger foreign language movies of the past few years.

Weekend Forecast (March 23-25)
1. The Hunger Games - $135 million
2. 21 Jump Street - $23 million (-41%)
3. The Lorax - $12.7 million (-44%)
4. John Carter - $7.3 million (-46%)

Weekend Report: 'The Hunger Games' Devours $155 Million

by Ray Subers

The Hunger Games

March 25, 2012

The odds were definitely in The Hunger Games favor this weekend: the big screen adaptation of the immensely popular young adult novel opened to an enormous estimated $155 million, which ranks third all-time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million). Remarkably, it debuted above all of the Twilight movies, and it also topped Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million) for highest debut ever for a non-sequel.

Among all the impressive Hunger Games statistics, two lesser-discussed ones are worth highlighting. First, the movie had an incredible hold on Saturday—it only fell 25 percent to $51 million, which ranks second all-time behind Spider-Man 3 ($51.3 million). This suggests that demand for The Hunger Games exists across a wide array of moviegoers, and isn't just rooted in the type of rabid fans that drove the front-loaded openings for recent Harry Potter and Twilight movies.

The other crazy statistic is one that should result in a noteworthy spike in champagne sales in Santa Monica, California this week—after just over two days in theaters, The Hunger Games has already passed Fahrenheit 9/11 ($119.2 million) to become Lionsgate's highest-grossing movie ever.

Knowing that they had something special on their hands, the company went all-in with one of their most expensive productions ever (just under $80 million after tax rebates). Lionsgate followed that up with a nicely targeted marketing effort that consistently built up anticipation until it reached a fevered level over the past month. Aside from just reaching out to fans of the book, though, they went a step further by clearly outlining the high stakes and making the movie seem accessible and interesting to a broad range of potential moviegoers.

While a majority of the audience for The Hunger Games were women (61 percent), the fact that it did have some appeal to men as well surely helped it get as high as it did. In comparison, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1's crowd was 80 percent female. The Hunger Games audience also skewed slightly older (56 percent were 25 years of age and up), and they awarded the movie a strong "A" CinemaScore.

On 268 IMAX screens, The Hunger Games grossed an estimated $10.6 million this weekend. That's roughly $40,000 per screen, which is a very impressive figure for a 2D movie that doesn't include any footage shot in IMAX.

Thanks to the mammoth movie in first place, the Top 12 earned an estimated $206.9 million this weekend. That's the ninth-highest aggregated weekend ever, and first all-time in the month of March.

While The Hunger Games was obviously the biggest draw this weekend, there were other movies in theaters as well. 21 Jump Street took second place with an estimated $21.3 million, which is off 41 percent from last weekend. Through 10 days in theaters, the movie has earned $71.05 million, which is a bit ahead of Jonah Hill's Superbad through the same point.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax dipped 43 percent to $13.1 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. With a total of $177.3 million, it's now lagging behind Despicable Me by $13 million; regardless, it still looks like a lock to close with over $200 million.

This may have been the weekend where John Carter officially transitioned from domestic disappointment to disaster. The movie plummeted 63 percent to just over $5 million, bringing its 17-day total to just $62.3 million (or less than The Hunger Games made on opening day). It is playing better overseas, but it's still not at the levels needed to really ease the pain over at the Mouse House.

Act of Valor rounded out the Top Five this weekend with $1.95 million. The combat flick, which features active-duty Navy SEALs, has earned a very solid $65.9 million so far.

Abortion drama October Baby opened in 390 locations and wound up in eighth place with an estimated $1.7 million. Further down the chart, Indonesian action movie The Raid: Redemption scored $221,000 from 14 locations for a solid per-theater average of $15,786.

UK Box Office for last weekend: http://www.mymovies.net/charts/default. ... UK&s=1&n=3

It‘s a little ironic isn‘t it? The Hunger Games‘ has watching children hunt each other down for sport as a representation of the darkest side of the human psyche, and yet we‘re all flocking in our droves to see it.

The movie hit the bullseye in the UK as it took £4.9million at the UK box office this weekend, the highest opening of the year.

21 Jump Street kept everything in order in second while raking in another £1.1million, and it was a slow weekend for bookings at The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which refused to vacate its room at three.

The Devil Inside was exorcised from first to fourth with weekend takings of £643,000, while We Bought A Zoo and Contraband stayed afloat in fifth and sixth respectively.

Continuing his slow–going battle against 12–foot tall barbarians on Mars, John Carter fell to seventh, leaving everyone wondering why he doesn‘t just give up the ghost.

This week‘s only other new debut Navy Seals drama Act Of Valour manoeuvred up the charts in eighth, with an opening weekend taking of £262, 935.

While The Woman In Black is still haunting the chart at nine and The Muppets carry on with their high–jinx in tenth.

Hunger Games is doing well. I wonder if it will keep Titanic at bay - some weeks ago, Titanic was forecast to do $45m on its "opening" weekend.

I think so. Might be a bit trickier in UK where it hasn't grossed so hugely - 4 mill is some way off "3rd biggest ever".
