Wow those are literally my favourites!
Woohoo! Glad you like them!
Tripolis wrote: "I Want To Know What Love Is" : My favourite track off "Memoirs...". This track is an amazing ballad, and by far better than "Angel's Cry", though the latter isn't a bad song either. I won't rank it as high as you did, though. One of her best-covers ever. 8/10
"Butterfly" : Now this is EPIC! One of her best songs ever and totally deserves a top 10 placing. This track is AMAZING and IMO is Mariah's most personal ballad ever. It's such a fan favourite and I can understand why. I won't say anything else so to keep the suspense for my countdown. 10/10
"When You Believe" (with Whitney Houston)" : Easily one of the best collaborations ever. The combination of two greatest voices of all-time really makes this song a timeless classic, and one that truly deserved much more success in the US. I've come to re-discover and appreciate this song all over again since Whitney's tragic death earlier this year, and this is a true inspiration for people who are struggling in life. 8.5/10
I knew "Butterfly" would be your fave of the batch! And I'm also pleased that you agree that "When You Believe" is one of the best duets of all-time.

swiftie13 wrote:I Want TO Know What Love Is, lovely cover, but nowhere near her best or the original. It could have been better.
Butterfly: My favourite from this batch. I love the chorus a whole lot, glad to see this very high, I don;t know if I would've placed it this high though. Shame it wasn't properly released int he US, easily another top 5 for her in the US.
When You Believe, not too keen on this one, it has yet to grow on me.
Aw, seems like you're not really a huge fan of any of the songs from this batch.
stevyy wrote:3x pure epicness. well done.
Aw, thank you, Stephan! I'm glad you consider them outstanding tracks as well.

love all of the songs and I'm especially happy to see
When You Believe that high... felt it was a little disrepcted on here
Yes, I find "When You Believe" gets a lot of (undeserved) hate here which is surprising since two of the biggest female stars recorded it. Plus, the song's one of the more inspirational and enduring classics of the 90's.
Luminator wrote:In contrast to many other people, i completely adore Mariah's rendition of I Want To Know What Love Is. It was the return of a typical Mariah Carey ballad. I agree though that it was a terrible single choice for the US market in 2009. This was the pre-Adele era when you could not have a hit with a super slow piano ballad.
So true! I actually didn't think it was a poor single choice. Sure it wasn't a huge hit, but Mariah's vocals really shined on the track and it was refreshing to have the public hear her doing what she does best - ballads.
phoenix98 wrote:"I Want To Know What Love Is" = I'm not entirely sure why I dislike this one quite so much...it's not that I'm a diehard fan of the original or anything...but it's just really underwhelming. it pales in comparison to the other ballads on Memoirs ("H.A.T.E.U.", "Angels Cry", heck...even "Languishing (Interlude)") and REALLY pales in comparison to her catalog of epic ballads. the video is just an embarrassing mess too (granted, she somehow managed to follow it with an even MORE embarrassing video...). this definitely would NOT make my Top 50...probably not even Top 100.
"Butterfly" = now here we have a MUCH better ballad! this one's definitely Top 40-worthy for me. people (well, h8ers) say that Mariah is all about vocal acrobatics and can't actually express emotion in her singing...but I think it's pretty hard to NOT hear any emotion in this. "for you'll never be mine, until you know the way it feels to fly..."
"When You Believe" = these two ladies are undoubtedly incredibly talented, but I don't think this duet comes close to being one of the best moments from either of their catalogs. it's good...Top 50-worthy, sure...but definitely not Top 15-worthy for me.
Aw, sounds like an underwhelming batch for you. As for "I Want To Know What Love Is", I think it's definitely the strongest
Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel track. And you're right, "Butterfly" is features some of Carey's most emotive vocals yet.

I have a feeling your top 10 will be completely different to mine! I think most of my top 10 has already gone actually.
Actually, we only share
one MC song in our Top 10's.

Maybe I should write this in the unpopular opinion thread, but I think this cover is even better than the original!

This song makes me always feel better.

When You Believe
Although not being one of my favorite from both singers this is a very good ballad.
I think most people expressed Mariah's version to be an upgrade of the original.
leoapp wrote:I Want To Know What Love Is - Glad to know you love this. I think it's very underrated. It's considered to be a bad cover by many people even some fans. Imo it's an amazing cover and miles better than the original. I like this, her whistle notes at the ends are just fantastic, her best whistle notes since Bringin' On The Heartbreak. But i wish the whistles weren't cut down so sudden.
Butterfly - This is a really great ballad and such a waste that it wasn't released physically in US, could've been a #1 hit. This song is so peaceful and haunting and always gives me a chill. However, i find it a bit boring if you listen to this too often.
When You Believe - I really love this song, THE BEST DUET EVER imo. Among my top 15 fave song from Mariah and My top 3 fave song from Whitney. The combination between Whitney's deep vocal and Mariah's soft vocal is just so perfect. Very surprised that the song didn't become a bigger hit and was criticized. I guess many people had too high expectation.
Which is why I try to not overplay it.

As for "When You Believe" being the best duet ever, I kinda like to reserve that honour for Brit's and Madge's "Me Against The Music" but it's definitely Top 3!
