Emotions - This is my 3rd least fave album of her after Glitter and Butterfly, probably because there are some jazzy and soul influence which i don't really love, this album really puts me to sleep especially through the end of the album. But it's not a bad album. It does have one of my all time favorites, Can't Let Go as well You're So Cold which has the best intro among all Mariah's songs, Emotions is also cool.
Top tracks: Can't Let Go, You're So Cold, Emotions
Fillers: Make It Happen (sorry  ), The Wind, And You Don't Remember, Blessed

Mariah Carey - This is among my top 5 fave albums of her. Very solid debut. Love the whistle notes in the whole album, especially on All In Your Mind. A couple of songs sound so dated today though. Only 1 song i practically dislike, You Need Me.
Top tracks: Vision Of Love, Love Takes Time, I Don't Wanna Cry, All In Your Mind, Prisoner, There's Got To Be A Way
Fillers: You Need Me

Music Box - Another my top 5 albums of her, there are many ballads but imo, the ballads are the highlight. The 2 uptempo songs, I've Been Thinking About You and Now That I Know, imo are the weakest although not bad.
Top tracks: Without You, Anytime You Need A Friend, Hero, Never Forget You, Dreamlover, Everything Fades Away
Fillers: I've Been Thinking About You, Now That I Know

Music Box > Mariah Carey > Emotions

All of them are absolutely stunning albums. Her earlier work just sh*ts on her recent efforts.

Emotions = like "If It's Over", I expected to see this higher, but I'm glad it isn't  a lot of fans love this because it's less polished, a bit less commercial than the albums that followed it...and I respect Mariah for "experimenting" a bit...but I just don't love what came of it. most of the ballads are pretty, but also pretty dull and sleep-inducing ("If It's Over", "So Blessed", "Till The End Of Time", "The Wind", though I think "atrocity" is a bit harsh). it actually reminds me a tiny bit of Britney's Oops! in the sense that lackluster ballads really drag the whole album down.

Mariah Carey = glad to see this so high, it would probably make my Top 5 too! I agree that there aren't any real clunkers on here, but if anything comes close, it's not "I Don't Wanna Cry" or "Vanishing"!

Music Box = lovely ranking for this one, I think I'd put it in the exact same spot! I definitely agree about "Everything Fades Away" too, I can understand why it was left off the US version.

if it's over is sooo underrated. It should have been a single and hit #1 - where it belongs.

OK, so Butterfly lands in the middle-field of your albums countdown.. *faints*. It's such a msterpiece. My life would not be the same without it. It defines who I am. My ultimate and all time #1.

Emotions - same as If it's over (and Can't let go) shud have become a diamond mega smash for her. It's sooo outstanding. My alltime #2.

I'm glad you like those two. :)

Tripolis wrote: Prisoner is my favourite track off her debut besides the title track. It's so epic and deserved to have a chance as a single over the mess that is "Someday" (which was a poor single IMO). Her "rap" verses in the song are also unique and she has never done that ever since. I think she makes a good rapper as her rapping is in sync with the rhythm TBH . It's one of her "forgotten singles" and though I wouldn't rank it as high as you did, I'm glad to see this track get some love as usually tracks from her debut are rarely mentioned by her fans. 8.5/10

If It's Over is a great track, but I think you ranked it too high. It seems to receive high praise from fans but I don't really understand the epicness of the song. Her live performances of this song (particularly the SNL one) are a few of the best performance in history. It is a standout from "Emotions", though. This track would be quite high on my chart, but definitely not as high as you did rank it. 8/10

Emotions is a decent album... is has grown on me a bit since I last said I disliked it. More notably, the album has gems like "And You Don't Remember", "Can't Let Go", "Make It Happen" and "If It's Over". The rest are either average or duds, though.. so it will not probably make my top 5 Mariah albums anyway.

Her debut is a great album, but in particular, the middle part of the album is a filler-fest. I don't really like any of the tracks there, and I feel the album would have been more cohesive and perfect as a whole without those fillers. I do know some of them are fan favourites, though. It'll probably not be in my top 5 as well.

Music Box is yet another cohesive album for the first 7 tracks, and the last 4 are fillers. It's by far from being her best album, but it isn't that bad as well, and this has a shot of ranking inside my top 5 Mariah albums. However, despite the fillers, the album does include some of Mariah's best tracks ever - particularly the outstanding "Anytime You Need A Friend" and her signature song - "Hero".
I actually prefer Mariah's rap verse to the rap verses of some 'professional' rappers.

I think the reason "If It's Over" gets so much adoration from fans is that it is such a vocal spectacle. Mariah's vocals are really strong on the track and though the song may have a simple production, I believe many MC fans appreciate the substance over style on this track. :)

I totally get that one or two tracks on Emotions can be...well, sleep-inducing, but it's great for the most part. I will overlook that you grouped "Make It Happen" with the fillers.

I'm glad that you're pleased with the other two rankings. :)

Well, I think all three are definitely stronger than Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel but Carey did release two outstanding pieces of work in the 2000's.

Sorry for ranking your life-defining, fave MC record so low. I'm just not that big a fan of it, to be honest. For me, it's grossly overrated. :-?

#5.

Always Be My Baby.

Image

The fifth of the poll options to fall and the last remaining Daydream song, "Always Be My Baby" comes in at #5. This mid-tempo ballad speaks of feelings of attachment and unity that Mariah feels with her estranged lover and that though they are no longer together, they will forever have a special place in each other's hearts. I love the entire song but I think my favourite part, which is also the catchiest bit, is when she sings, "Do do doop do doop da dum". I also really like the line, "I'm part of you indefinitely". The track has got such a summery feel to it and it's so light-heartedly enjoyable that it's easy to see how it has become one of Carey's definitive classics. "Always Be My Baby" peaked at #1 in the US and Canada and managed a #3 peak in the UK. My best friend and I love to sing this song and though we never really do it justice, we always have a great time trying.

#4.

All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Image

The sixth of the poll options to fall and the only one that failed to receive a single vote, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" comes in at #4. To call this track a holiday classic would be a gross understatement. For me, this song defines Christmas as I can't remember a single Christmas since my birth when I haven't heard this infectious, joyous, exhilarating, soulful masterpiece. As an MTV writer put it, the song is "a majestic anthem full of chimes, sleigh bells, doo-wop flourishes, sweeping strings and one of the most dynamic and clean vocal performances of Carey's career." The song is truly a timeless classic, re-entering the charts every December and setting an insurmountable bar many a Pop artist have tried (and failed) to reach.

#3.

Hero.

Image

The seventh of the poll options to fall, "Hero" is the highest ranking track from Music Box as well as jointly holding the honour of being my fave 90's song from Mariah. Lyrically, "Hero" is probably the best MC song and definitely her most inspirational ballad. Carey croons that while we may sometimes feel discouraged and disheartened, that there lies within us a "hero", an inner strength to make it through any difficulties and to overcome any seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Call me a sucker for inspirational uplifting ballads, but this is one of the rare Carey songs that can make me tear-up yet feel so unbelievably comforted at the same time. It's the connection that so many people have with the song that has resulted in "Hero" being widely regarded as Carey's signature song. The song is a titanic testament to the brilliance of Carey's songwriting capabilities and her vocal performance is undeniably stirring. This song is simply brilliant.

"Always Be My Baby" : It is, no doubt, a timeless classic. Arguably Mariah's signature song along with "Hero", and possibly, "We Belong Together". This song is great, but I definitely would not rank this as high as you did as there are more Mariah songs that I can relate to. That doesn't take away the fact that it is a brilliant masterpiece, though. I believe its success in the US was somewhat overshadowed by "One Sweet Day", and I think that this is much better than that duet. One of the best tracks, if not the best, from "Daydream". 9.5/10

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" : To me, this is the best Christmas song of all-time. My opinion may probably be biased just because this song is from Mariah, but it really has that timeless feel to it that really makes it a modern-day Christmas classic, one that can probably live on for the next few centuries (that is, if music still exists). Probably the song Carey is well-known throughout Asia for, I believe this song really cemented her position in history as one of the greatest lyricists and songwriters of all-time. The feel the song gives is just magic and is brilliant, testament to what Mariah can really do when she puts her heart and soul into writing. 9.5/10

"Hero" : This is, by far, the song that Mariah is well-known for, especially in the US. Even though the fans say this is a tad overrated, I don't really think it is as this song just blows me away everytime I listen to it. Besides Mariah's superior vocals in the track, the lyrics of the song is also extremely relatable. It is the best track from "Music Box", and I agree with your ranking of it, even though it isn't that high on my own. Surprisingly, I prefer the 2009 version to the album one as I think Mariah sings with more passion and emotion in that version. Nevertheless, a great song that can never be covered by anyone else - the number of embarrassing moments of contestants that sing this song on talent shows just proves that fact right. 9.5/10

I'm glad to see you rate all three songs highly. I agree completely that "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the best Christmas song of all-time.

Albums Intermission!!!

#2.

The Emancipation of Mimi.

Image

Very narrowly missing out on the top spot is Mariah's comeback album, The Emancipation of Mimi. After the critical rejects and commercial failures of Glitter and Charmbracelet, Carey came back with a vengeance, impressing music critics and pleasing audiences to make the era her most successful in almost a decade. For me, the album's strength lies in the expertly crafted R&B ballads ("Stay The Night", "Mine Again", "Fly Like A Bird") which proved that Carey's voice was still there. For me, the record contains but two true clunkers ("Say Somethin'" and "To The Floor"). The album's highlight, the phenomenal "We Belong Together" broke airplay records left, right, and center and became (and remains) her biggest post-2000 smash by quite a margin. The album would later go on to be the biggest-seller of 2005 in the US, eventually obtaining a 6X Platinum certification and establishing Mariah's comeback as a triumphant success. 7.8/10.

#1.

E=MC².

Image

My all-time fave MC album is her 2008 release, E=MC². Having already firmly established her comeback with her previous record, this album was released with Carey's highest ever first week sales. The lead single was a huge hit, becoming Carey's 18th #1 hit and subsequently breaking her tie with Elvis to become the solo artist with the most #1's. Unfortunately, the second single, "Bye Bye" stalled any momentum that the album had and the album sold significantly less than its predecessor. One reason that this album is my fave from MC is it's diversity. Carey tackles saucy, uptempo R&B numbers ("Touch My Body", "Migrate", "I Stay In Love", "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time"), catchy Pop tunes ("O.O.C.") and even fearlessly ventures into Reggae territory with "Cruise Control". E=MC² was the only MC album to not have a single album track rank below the Top 100 on my countdown as it's lowest ranking track, "I Wish You Well", came in at #91. The album's gem is actually a track that never got to see the light of day as a single, the impeccable "For The Record" which will take on "We Belong Together" tomorrow to bring this tribute to a climactic end. 8/10.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" is the true definition of a comeback album. 8-)

It's an amazing album, though I definitely wouldn't rank it as high as you did (obviously). However, I do believe it is one of the albums of her career, and one of the best albums of the past decade. The album really brought Mariah to the top of the charts again, and the success it brought her was perhaps unmatched in her career. I believe that when the album release, she was everywhere and probably everyone would know "We Belong Together" as it was such a blockbuster hit at that time. It does have some fillers, though, the mess that is "Say Somethin'".

E=MC² is a great album, even greater than The Emancipation of Mimi.

To me, this is her best album from the 2000s, and I probably would rank this top 3 or top 5. It does have plenty of great songs ("I Stay In Love", "For The Record", "Migrate", "Bye Bye", "Touch My Body", "I Wish You Well") - but, the album contains one of my most-hated Mariah tracks ever ("Cruise Control"). E=MC² deserved much more success in the U.S., but I think the wrong single choices really messed up the opportunity of the album being a success for Mariah.

Your ranking of her albums would totally differ from how I would rank them, but to each their own, so I wouldn't hold it against you for ranking some of my favourite MC albums low.

omfg emc² at #1? I'm soo delighted to see that. It's such a great album, TEOM as well.

ABMB, Hero and AIWFC are three groundbreaking evergreens.
