7. The Black Eyed Peas - Shut Up

Image

Second and last entry for The Black Eyed Peas. Unlike in many other countries, Shut Up was the band's breakthrough single in France. Where Is The Love? fared well, charting within the Top 20 but the second single from Elephunk was the first of their several chart topping singles. This song came out a bit of nowhere and became incredibly popular. I've always got fond memories of my travel to Spain with my class back in March 2004, with everyone singing this song in the bus  . It's a shame that Black Eyed Peas have gone into a downhill spiral for a few years. Don't think they'll ever be able to match the quality of their earlier singles.

Tomorrow we'll find an act who's had several entries further down the chart.

Lost Without You and Behind These Hazel Eyes are probably two of my favourite songs from teh respective artists!

Not amazed by any of your Top 10 so far, sorry. :(

6. Coldplay - Trouble

Image

And here is another gem from Coldplay. Trouble was the band's second Top 10 hit in the UK and is their best known single from Parachutes here in France. This is a gorgeous follow-up to Yellow. I love the melancholy and the sadness of the song. This is also perfect to chill out in summer. Not the last entry for them. Will Clocks top the chart?

Time to enter the Top 5:

5. Coldplay - In My Place

Image

A Coldplay song can hide another. The band is probably my favourite act ever, possibly even above Delta Goodrem. In My Place is the very first Coldplay song I've ever heard. I remember finding it gorgeous upon first listen and I still love it just as much ten years later. Their last but one entry in my chart.

Here's #4::

4. Delta Goodrem - Born To Try

Image

How predictable (no pun intended)! Aussie songtsress Delta Goodrem lands just outside the Top 3 with her debut. Well, I know it's not her best song. I know that the lyrics are cheesy. Yet, this is an incredibly solid pop record. I think I like it because of her voice, or because of the tune, or because of the harmonies, or because this is the first Delta song I've ever heard, thinking it was utter crap at first. Or because it's a combination of all of this. I still enjoy listening to Born To Try and thought it was a very good debut single and an amazing introduction to Delta's music.

3. Delta Goodrem - Predictable

Image

And here she is again, this time with the fifth and last single from Innocent Eyes. This classy song really grabbed me upon first listen. I've rarely seen the music and the overall atmosphere of a song match its parent lyrics so well. This is my favourite Delta song.

So who will be #1? Lady GaGa or Coldplay? Coldplay or Lady GaGa? The top 2 will be revealed tomorrow.

Okay! Time for a bulk catch-up, I have been forgetting to leave comments. So many songs here that I love! Where to begin...

Delta's Predictable & Born To Try
- I find the latter too cheesy and even though I like it, I think it is the weakest of the five singles. However, 'Predictable' is amazing, I even loved the live performance they used for the video, I must have watched that Channel [V] concert a good 5 or 6 times on TV back in 2003-04! I remember at the end, the little crowd wanted more and Delta was happy to oblige, so her and her guitarist put on an impromptu performance of 'Butterfly'.

Coldplay - Trouble
- Not familiar with this track at all as it didn't chart in Australia.

Black Eyed Peas - Shut Up
- Amazing song, the structure, the intricacy and the lyrics are so fantastic. This is one of my all-time favourites songs to rap along to.

Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
- This never fails to put a smile on my face! The animated video is one of the most memorable of the entire decade.

Spiller - Groovejet
- Really nice dance track, but not quite top 50 of the decade material IMO

Lady GaGa - Just Dance
- I think everyone here knows I love this song, it was my #1 track of 2008

Empire of the Sun - Standing On The Shore
- A really nice album track, but that was about it for me, I would have preferred 'Half Mast' to have been the single.

Keane - Somewhere Only We Know
- This song is absolutely beautiful and their best by far. Luckily it wasn't a hit in Australia, because it has become a well kept secret.

Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You
- Possibly the best ballad of the entire decade, this just hits the mark and then some. Phenomenal stuff.

Time to revel the Top 2 and what's my fav song of the decade.

2. Lady GaGa - Poker Face

Image

Just Dance was probably my fav song of the summer 2008. Yet, I did consider GaGa as a one hit wonder back then and I didn't know that there were better things to come with her second single. Poker Face didn't really hit me upon first listen in September that year. I thought it was way too similar to Just Dance and found it flat. A few weeks later, I became obsessed to this, I needed to listen to this several times a day. I suppose that this pounding beat, the 'mamamama' and those 'can't read my, can't read my', had unconsciously buried well into my brain.
I just want to dance like an idiot when that chorus blows out. The melody is just irresistible. This is what pop music should be.

The video increased my love for this song even more. It's very simple and quite basic. I mean what we have here: a girl with a fairly terrible blonde wig in a hella weird blue outfit dancing to a poor choregraphy next to a swimming pool. I would normally hate it. Yet, it works extremely well here for some reason that still eludes me. The magic of pop I suppose. As strange as it may sound, this is possibly one of my fav videos of the past decade.

Poker Face is my favourite GaGa song. I've listened to this so many times I've lost count. However, I've never got bored of it. Even though I've enjoyed the Born This Way album, I'd like her to come back to this kind of music / videos, not overproduced songs like some stuff of her latest LP was. This is exactly where she excels.

And the #1 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS *drumroll*

Crazy Frog - Axel F

Image

NOPE, I'M JOKING. That dirge's nowhere near #1 (thank God).

The real #1 actually is:

1. Coldplay - Clocks

Image

Congratulations to Spartan and Play who guessed my #1 correctly. My favourite band take the top spot with the second single of A Rush Of Blood To The Head. To be honest, I like it almost as much as Poker Face. I decided to put Clocks at the top for two reasons: I've had more time to fully digest it: 10 years against heardly 4 for Poker Face.
This song, and even the parent album, have accompanied through many important and stages of my life. I have so many memories related to this song actually. Well, this is very subjective but all of this gave Clocks the edge of Poker Face.

Musically, this sounds like your typical Coldplay song. That atmospheric piano grabs you just as soon as the song starts. It also has a slight nightly feel that I just love too. This is really great to listen to it after midnight. I don't have much else to say about it. Overall, this is one of my favourtie songs of all time, the best Coldplay song and my favourite song this decade.

Thanks to everyone (i.e. 5 people  ) who has followed and commented my countdown. It's always a pleasure to read feedback.

Recap is coming in a few seconds.

"Born To Try" & "Clocks" are both nice. I was hooked on "Poker Face" for several months in late 2008/ early 2009 until I overplayed it.

Nice countdown :D

Top 2 are good songs, but I wouldn't rate either one as highly as you have R (:P)...although if I had to name my fave Gaga tunes, PF would be close to the top.

"Poker Face" is undeniably brilliant, one of the best songs Gaga's ever recorded and the highlight of an equally epic parent album, The Fame.

"Clocks" isn't quite my fave Coldplay song as that honour would definitely go to "Fix You" but it's certainly up there in my Top 5 somewhere. It's definitely a worthy chart-topper though as the song's very atmospheric and Coldplay's vocals are haunting and beautiful.

All in all, fabulous countdown! You sorta lost me at the beginning of the Top 10 but you've wrapped the countdown up just wonderfully. :)

'Clocks' is a great track, that piano section alone is perhaps the most well known piano piece of the last 15 years, so much so that it proved a hit in Potbelleez's 'Are You With Me' and David Guetta's 'When Love Takes Over'... and I'm sure that isn't the end of it.

I enjoyed this countdown, we have much more similar taste than you or I could have probably imagined.

The whole of your Top 5 is pretty brilliant.

All of Delta's songs are brilliant so I cna't argue with her inclusions in you chart. Poker Face is one of GaGa's best and Clocks is a great tune. :)
