Exactly, it should be authentic.
But when I hear some dance/house songs these days, I doubt that they are really authentic...

Kelly Rowland, your example, thought like: "I've got to do both, RNB and dancy house songs to reach as many people as possibly"... In the end, the album ended as her least selling studio album being out of the Billboard 200 after a few weeks and ended on a relatively poor No. 171 on the YEC!

Yet, her first 2 albums were not street at all.
Maybe she didn't want that kind of sound?

Playing devil's advocate
Well, she was one of the biggest examples of "pop star and rapper" when that formula was hot... but yet as soon as it fell out of favor she went to the next hot trend. Its hardly like she has this artistic integrity and makes music she's passionate about sales be damned . She jumped at the front of the line to do electropop when she saw the sign of a hit.

Billy Joel is also from the Bronx, nobody mistakes him for an urban artist

I know...I was trying to play devil's advocate.

She hops from trend to trend almost as much as she hops from relationship to relationship.
I can feel this light that's inside of me, growing fast into a bolt of lightning. I know one spark will shock the world...
