Asereje was definitely #1 in Portugal too, for about a zillion weeks

Asereje was not successful in the United States and did not have much longevity.

IMO "Rolling in the Deep" can't be the most influential... I just don't feel it as the most influential, I'm sure that song was not highly succesful in the African, Saharan, Indian and all those neglected places... even here in Latin America, Adele is obviously recognized, but "Poker Face" was more influential from what I remember...

What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane, and if so, isn't that better than a life of despair?

I live in Latin America. From my point of view, "Poker face" was a huge smash between young people but "Rolling in the deep" had that all genres/all ages appeal. From kids to grandparents. I mean, I've seen women in their 50s buying Adele's album (never Gaga's).

In my country RITD was a multi-genre smash! You could heart literally everywhere. Even gypsis played it on a street  and you could hear it in underground clubs where other pop stars would never be played.

Much bigger than most songs mentioned in this thread.

Just because a song has tremendous sales, it doesn't mean it's the most successful song. Let's not act like 2000-2006 didn't exist.

I don't think it's the most successful but didn't Crazy in Love just get ranked number 1 by NME for the 00's?

We belong together was a big (radio) hit in the States but sales wise, Hung Up sold considerably more, worldwide that is.

"We Belong Together" sold the album and had a great impact, because it was a career-defining moment for Mariah. And considering "Hung Up" topped like 50 countries, it isn't much remembered at all. Doesn't live up to such a record.

But I doubt people outside the States remember "We Belong Together" much. It wasn't that big.

I think people still remember it as "that song from 2005". Surely it isn't much like the US where it is totally devoted, I was just saying "Hung Up" isn't that popular too, nowadays, for a song that crowned many charts.

Both of those songs actually don't live up to their records. Those songs were indeed huge hits but the impact is more monumental to their careers rather than to the people or pop culture in that sense. Even "Since U Been Gone" and "Hollaback Girl" were more definitive moments of 2005 even if both weren't hailed as the top songs of that year.
