Carrie Underwood wrote:"As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry," she said. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

"Our church is gay friendly," she said. "Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."
I realize it would be a bit much to make a new topic everytime a celebrity endorses marriage equality, but I think this is especially noteworthy since Carrie is a country act, a genre that tends to attract very conservative fans. She's definitely risking offending a lot of those fans with these statements.

Still, her audience is one that is incredibly conservative and anti-gay, so her to say something like this is still risky, look at Dixie Chicks when it comes to how country fans treat country artists who have a liberal attitude.

Well, she's a country pop young female singer so her audience is way more liberal than the one of the Dixie Chicks or other core country acts.
For example, I doubt that if Lady Antebellum or Taylor Swift said something like that, it wouldn't matter much as their fans are kind of open anyway.

I don't understand where's the sense in the talking about gay marriages at the moment. The music is what matters and so I don't think differently about Jay-Z or Carrie Underwood now. Plus that makes it sound like being gay is something unusual, as it's needed to be talked about, I think it shouldn't be a matter of discussion as there are also no artists supporting straight marriages so they make them a minority consciously, which I think is unnecessary.

I cant believe people think that everyone who support gay marriage is seeking new fans or career opportunities. It's not like this, she will get new fans but she will loose some too. I think it was very brave and nice of her to say that regardless.

There's no competition here, people support gay marriage because it's not legal and that are a lot of people against it. Nobody have problem with straight marriage, so there's nothing to support.

lol, does JSparksfan have a confederate flag bumper sticker and question if Obama is Muslim and born in another country?

I have no respect for the country community after the way they turned on The Dixie Chicks in 2003 for daring have an opinion about President Bush.

“I made my bed and sleep like a baby
with no regrets and I don’t mind saying
it’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
and how in the world can the words that I said
send somebody so over the edge that they write me a letter
saying that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over…”

seriously, though, I'm not sure if people outside the US are aware of the population that country music often targets/attracts here. as NothingFails pointed out, the Dixie Chicks were blacklisted at country radio stations across the nation, I believe some groups steamrolled their albums, and (as the song above mentions) some people even sent death threats after one of the Chicks spoke out against President Bush at one of their concerts.

might Carrie attract some new gay fans with this marriage equality statement? sure. but is she risking seriously pissing off a fanbase that has helped her go multi-platinum will all of her albums so far and will not hesitate to turn their back on an act who violates their very rigid, conservative values? definitely.

Exactly, everyone wants some new fans, ... I dopn't think so... she's just opening her mind, what's wrong about that?

Every celebrity these days is asked about gay marriage. I'm sure the same happened to her, especially now that Obama has publicly shown support to the cause. She's just being sincere.

Sincerity =/= career opportunity.

Carrie's core is country, but she's a country artist that sells across demographics. I think the Dixie Chicks had it much worse because that era didn't have an "Obama-supports-gay-marriage" then.

We can look for sneaky back-handed reasons to do everything positive any celebrity ever does, but just imagine how tiring it must be to be so mistrusting all the time.

Sometimes, just take what you get and run with it. I'm glad to know she supports it. She's just one person and it shouldn't matter any more than if any other random person supported it, but that's simply the way society here works and celebrities are seen as above others with more important and interesting opinions. Since that's the case, I'll applaud every celebrity that voices theirs (and it's a good one lol).

It's interesting that the UKMIXers that are firmly againat gay marriage themselves always refuse to believe that a celebrity could speak openly about this topic without having a vested interest, and the gays always applaud and believe it's genuine. :P

Im glad she supports it even if its just for PR. Its better than displaying bigoted behaviour.

I'm gay myself but I also realise it is a great business opportunity. ;) It's obviously a positive message but I'm not the type to go "oh my god she is amazing I love her for this, let's listen to her music", I'm more like "meh, ok nice but whatever"....
