Newton Faulkner New Album And Tour

Brit nominated, acoustic guitar virtuoso Newton Faulkner has announced a UK tour this October. He will also release his single ‘Clouds’ on July 1st taken from his third album ‘Write It On Your Skin’ on July 9th.

Newton wrote ‘Clouds’ in a garage in the LA sunshine with his brother Toby and Sam Farrar (Phantom Planet). The track sums up one of the over-riding themes of the album, which is ‘I know things appear to be bad now but they will get better’.

It’s been over three years since 2009’s ‘Rebuilt By Humans’ and in that time he’s toured the world, started a family (he has a one year old son, Beau Henry Faulkner-Richards) and some might say helped usher in a new generation of singer-songwriters. Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard and Michael Kiwanuka might be stylistically diverse, but their ‘have-guitar-will-travel’ approach surely flows from the trailblazing example of Newton.

Now, after invention, innovation, reinvention and creation, comes his third album, Write It On Your Skin. This one man band (in every sense) has opened himself up to the talents of other writers and players working with his brother Toby (aka Billy Battenberg songwriter), hip hop fan Sam Farrar (Phantom Planet) and production writing pair Nexus.

The result? An album bristling with spontaneity, the best kind of DIY imagination, and songs from unlikely sources but with a very likely-lad appeal.

He is the feelgood man of the season, the summertime troubadour who brings singalong vibes. As he says now with a laugh, despite his trademark rust-red dreads, he only seems to get recognized when it’s sunny outdoors:

“For some reason if it’s raining it can’t be me – but if the sun’s shining, then it’s definitely me! I’m completely affiliated with the sun. I get that now.”

Newton has previously sold over 1million albums in the UK alone. His debut ‘Hands Built By Robots’ spent over 10 months inside the Top 40 Album Charts and become one of the Top 20 Biggest Selling UK digital albums of all time.

Was #1 in yesterday's midweek update according to Sarah Hall of Sony Music:

Sarah Hall
@sarah_hall
Lover of music and a publicist for Sony Music. Views are my own and all that jazz... blah, blah, blah.
So @NewtonFaulkner has the number one album in today's midweeks YES! Did we all see him on BBC breakfast this morning
...AND it's still #1 in today's official chart update.

From the Official Charts Company:

Newton Faulkner and Lianne La Havas go head to head in the albums race
11/07/2012
By Lauren Kreisler

Newton Faulkner takes the early lead in this week’s albums race, but young soul newcomer Lianne La Havas is biting at his heels, according to today’s Official Albums Chart Update.

Write It On Your Skin, Faulkner’s follow up to 2009’s Rebuilt By Humans, sees the acoustic guitar virtuoso enlisting the help of his brother Toby (a former drum and bass MC), Phantom Planet’s Sam Farrar and production writing duo Nexus. This is the Surrey singer/songwriter’s third studio album, and if Faulkner and his signature rust-red dreadlocks hold on through to Sunday, Write It On Your Skin will be his second chart topper (his 2007 debut Hand Built By Robots also hit the Official Albums Chart summit).

22 year old soul singer/songwriter Lianne La Havas enters the race today at Number 2 with debut album Is Your Love Big Enough. The south Londoner, who can already count under her belt a breakthrough performance on Later With Jools Holland, a Bon Iver US tour support slot, as well as a stint as backing vocalist for fellow songstress Paloma Faith, releases her first full length debut after two warmly received EPs.

Faulkner and La Havas are separated today by less than 3,000 copies, while Maroon 5’s Overexposed (4) and Chris Brown’s Fortune (5) round off today’s Top 5.

New Entries And High Climbers

There are a total of four new entries in today’s Official Albums Chart Update Top 40. Led by Newton Faulkner (1) and Lianne La Havas (2), next up is returning Scottish indie rockers The View with new offering Cheeky For A Reason at Number 3.

Frank Ocean of LA hip-hop collective Odd Future, who also finished second in the BBC’s Sound Of 2012 poll behind Michael Kiwanuka, looks set for a debut Top 10 with Channel Orange (Number 6). Ocean hit the headlines recently after posted an open letter to his Tumblr account disclosing that he'd fallen in love with another man.

Adam Lambert looks set for his highest UK charting album with Trespassing (7); his 2010 debut For Your Entertainment reached 36. Meanwhile Canadian rockers Rush complete the week’s new entries with the band’s 19th studio album, Clockwork Angels, currently sat at Number 10.

Officially the UK's #1 album this week! :D

From the Official Charts Company:

Newton Faulkner beats Frank Ocean to top the Official Albums Chart
15/07/2012
By Dan Lane

Newton Faulkner debuts at Number 1 today on the Official Albums Chart with his third album, Write It On Your Skin, after fending off tough competition from Frank Ocean's debut solo album, Channel Orange.

Faulkner took an early lead in Wednesday’s Official Chart Update, which he has managed to maintain through to today’s final whistle. Write It On Your Skin gives the Surrey singer songwriter his second chart topper; his 2007 debut, Hand Built By Robots, also reached the Official Albums Chart summit.

“I've been completely blown away by the response to this album,” Newton told OfficialCharts.com. “It was three years solid work but so worth it!”

His closest competitor, Frank Ocean, debuts at Number 2 today with his first solo outing, Channel Orange. Ocean, who is a member of US hip-hop collective Odd Future, saw his debut album rush released earlier this week. It entered Wednesday’s Official Chart Update at Number 6 after just 24 hours on sale. Today Channel Orange finishes in second place, a mere 3,000 copies behind the top spot.

Maroon 5 are down one place this week as Overexposed slides from Number 2 to Number 3, while 22 year old South London singer/songwriter Lianne La Havas enters the Official albums Chart at Number 4 with her debut release, Is Your Love Big Enough. Last week’s Official Albums Chart-topper, Fortune by Chris Brown (Number 5) completes this week’s Top 5.

New Entries And High Climbers

In addition to Newton Faulkner’s Write It On Your Skin (Number 1), Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange (2) and Lianne La Havas’ Is Your Love Big Enough (4), there are three other new entries on today’s Official Albums Chart Top 40.

Scottish indie rockers The View are at Number 9 with new offering Cheeky For A Reason, while former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert scores his highest charting UK album to date with Trespassing new in at Number 16. Canadian rockers Rush enter at Number 21 with their 19th studio album, Clockwork Angels.

Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now is this week’s highest climber, up 24 places from 56 to Number 32, while Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are up 7 places from 33 to 26.

Well done Newton. Didn't expect it to be #1. I haven't had time to listen to it yet but I will soon.
