One of the biggest pioneers of electronic and dance music. Their biggest successes I'd say were in the late 80s rather than the 90s.

"they were big in the 90s I guess"?

Sorry, I'm not a big fan of Kraftwerk but I thought every german knew who they are!
In the 70s the were revolutionary in their genre and they paved the way for electronic music as we know it now.

LastFM wrote:Paramore is an American rock band that was formed in Franklin, Tennessee, United States in 2004. The band currently consists of Hayley Williams (lead vocals/keyboard), Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) and Taylor York (lead guitar). The band have released three studio albums in total; All We Know Is Falling (2005), Riot! (2007) and Brand New Eyes (2009). In 2002, at the age of 13, vocalist Hayley Williams moved to Franklin, Tennessee, where she met brothers Josh and Zac Farro while attending private school. Prior to forming Paramore, Williams and bassist Jeremy Davis took part in a funk cover band called The Factory, while the Farro brothers had practiced together after school. Paramore was officially formed in 2003. The band’s first song written together was Conspiracy, which was later used on their debut album. John Janick, CEO and co-founder of the music label Fueled By Ramen, got a hold of Paramore’s demos and went to a Taste of Chaos performance in Orlando, Florida to see the band perform live. After a smaller private performance at a warehouse, the band was signed to the label in April 2005. Paramore traveled back to Orlando to record their debut album All We Know Is Falling, which took three weeks to record.

#93 - THE KINKS - 118pts
Voters: taverner, fearlesswift13, matthew_dixon, zeus555, jimmypages59, jkkdark

LastFM wrote:The Kinks (1963–1996) were a British rock group that came out of the British R&B/Garage Rock scene of the early 1960s. Formed in 1963 in London, UK, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single You Really Got Me (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory and bassist Peter Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 due to a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group. With Ray’s splendid songwriting skills and unashamedly English voices, Dave’s impressive guitar work and Avory’s tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British rock and the “british invasion” of America, lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from The Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their impressive back catalogue of songs have been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers and Queens of the Stone Age to name but a few.

The Kinks is a group I'm yet to discover.

I like The Only Exception by Paramore, but it's not my cup of tea.

#190 - The Human League

LastFM wrote:The Human League are an English synthpop band formed in 1977. Originally a minimal post-punk synthesiser-based group from Sheffield, UK, they became one of the most successful new wave acts of the 80s. The only consistent band member is vocalist and songwriter Phil Oakey. The band’s best known configuration was their 1980-1985 lineup of Phillip Oakey (vocals), Joanne Catherall (vocals), Susanne Sulley (vocals), Phillip Adrian Wright (keyboards), Jo Callis (guitar, keyboards) and Ian Burden (bass).
#189 - Cream

LastFM wrote:Cream was a 1960s three-piece British band consisting of bassist/lead vocalist Jack Bruce, guitarist/vocalist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker, having formed in London, England. They were known as one of the first great power trios and supergroups of rock. Their sound was characterised by a hybrid of blues, hard rock and psychedelic rock. Cream combined Clapton’s blues guitar playing with the powerful and airy voice and intense bass lines of Jack Bruce and the manic drumming of Ginger Baker.
#188 - The Black Keys

LastFM wrote:The Black Keys are a two-man blues-rock group from Akron, Ohio, United States which formed in 2001, consisting of singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. The band name was inspired by a schizophrenic artist and friend in Akron, who used the term “black keys” to describe things he disliked or people he did not trust. The Black Keys have roots in traditional blues and psychedelic rock stylings.
#187 - Lynyrd Skynyrd

LastFM wrote:Lynyrd Skynyrd (pronounced /?l?n?rd ?sk?n?rd/ LIN-?rd-SKIN-?rd) is a Southern Rock band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida, USA in 1964. The band became prominent in the Southern United States in 1973, and rose to worldwide recognition before three members and one road crew member died in an airplane crash in 1977. The band reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with lead singer Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny as the frontman. Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour and record. Of its original members, only Gary Rossington remains with the band as of 2010. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.
#186 - Gladys Knight and the Pips

LastFM wrote:Gladys Knight & The Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia, United States active from 1953 to 1989. The group was best known for their string of hit singles on Motown’s “Soul” record label and Buddah Records from 1967 to 1975, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (1967) and “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973). The longest-lived incarnation of the act featured Gladys Knight on lead vocals, with The Pips, who included her brother Merald “Bubba” Knight and their cousins Edward Patten and William Guest, as backup singers.

Okay - just HOW did the Kinks do so badly? :o :o :o

They were my No. 18 - fantastic band, and in my opinion safely about the fourth biggest band of the 60s (after the Beatles, Stones and Beach Boys).

As Wayne said, I also voted Stereophonics - but I would pick a very different list of "signature songs" - however great "Rewind" might be for example, to me, tracks like "The Bartender and the Thief" and "Thousand Trees" would be amongst their real signature stuff...

1. Divine Comedy (215)
2.
3.
4.
5. Flanders and Swann (233)
6. Bluetones (238)

Paramore were my #9 :D I was really into them a couple of years ago and love songs like Misery Business, Hallelujah, Crushcrushcrush, Ignorance and my favourite All I Wanted.

I don't listen to them so much anymore but hope they can come back with a more mature album that resparks my interest.

Also love Gladys Knight and The Pips. Midnight Train To Georgia is great :D

Matthew - weren't The Who also bigger then The Kinks in the 60s? I'm not too sure but I don't know if you mean worldwide or just in the UK?

I agree though - a great band - Waterloo Sunset is fantastic - one of the best tunes of the 60s and stands up with anything as good as what The Beatles did.

It's hard to determine Edwood, going on Chart Placings, it was probably The Kinks.

The Kinks had 3 UK No.1's Singles, The Who 0.
The Kinks had 12 UK Top 10 Singles, The Who 9
The Kinks had 5 UK Top 10 LP's, The Who 3
The Kinks had 3 US Top 10 Singles, The Who 1
Both had 1 US Top 10 Album

But I think towards the end of the decade The Kinks were clearly in a decline, whereas The Who were turning into a full on rock band and on the up.

@04wayne: Could you do the countdown a bit faster? I think 5 artists per day is OK.

Evanescence were great during their first era... Bring Me To Life is a great song and My Immortal is one of the most beautiful songs ever. After that very successful era, they tried a less mainstream but at the same time also more boring sound to me...
As "Evanescence" only sold 10% of "Fallen", other people do agree.

I do it, when I have time, so it does depend on the day, how many artists you'll get.
