Athlete
|
Released: 17th August 2009.
After delivering two reasonably successful albums and popular singles such as "You Got the Style" and "Wires", Athlete seemed to have disappeared without a trace following the lukewarm reception to their previous album "Beyond the Neighbourhood". However, the first single from "Black Swan" is a remarkable step in the right direction for the Deptford quartet, with a strong 80s' synth-pop vibe seldom heard on previous efforts. Although it doesn't quite reach the soaring heights of yore, it's still a pretty nifty comeback from the boys.
We don't quite know what happened musically or commercially to Athlete on their last album - 2007's "Beyond The Neighbourhood" - but musically you'll be glad to hear they're back on track this week with "Superhuman Touch", the first single from their new album "Black Swan". Going down the Morten Harket/"Scary Monsters" era Bowie route that Keane went down successfully on their last album, whilst it won't set the charts alight it's an odd but altogether rewarding listen - in fact, their best single since those of the "Tourist" era.
