Punch And The Apostles
|
Released: 15th February 2010.
"Formed from the rib of Adam, Punch & the Apostles walked through The Garden of Eden, were unconvinced, and moved to Scotland."
So goes their bio on their MySpace! I was actually sent a press pack to review, though seeing as that is mostly composed of reviews itself i headed towards their MySpace!
This is one of the most baffling groups to describe, as they combine elements of rock, punk, jazz, showhall music, folk and general avant-garde kitchen sink nuttiness!
Of the songs from this new album - released February - that are on their MySpace, recent single "I'm A Hobo" is a rowdy singalong not unlike Madonna's folk-rock mates Gogol Bordello.
The brilliantly-named "Astral Meat-Hook" is a macabre waltz like a drunken Nick Cave.
Their music deliberately shifts from melody to cacophony at any given moment, to the point where you're always unsettled as to what might happen next. "Moon Marrow" goes from piano crooner to horror movie riffing like some absurd modern version of prog rock. I can take some strange music but even this is too 'out there' for me! Some of you will adore them, that's for sure. If i was rating them for originality they'd get a five but my honest vote...
