When Delta Goodrem released her million-selling debut album "Innocent Eyes", the whole world fell down at the feet of this beautiful girl who could play the piano as amazingly as she could sing.
Then the unthinkable happened - she was diagnosed and treated for Hodgkins Disease, a type of cancer. Having taken a time out for her recovery, Austrialia's top charting female artist is back with a deeper, more personal album, focusing on her past trials and tribulations.
Comeback single "Out Of The Blue" takes her signature ballad sound and blends it with romantic lyrics, yet it's far from the best on the album. Title track "Mistaken Identity" is where Delta really knuckles down to the heart of the matter, telling us how much her illness changed her as a person, and that she doesn't feel she'll ever get her old self back again.
As well as having a darker subject to write about, the music on "Mistaken Identity" is also much darker than the light piano acoustic we witnessed on the debut. Cue in more strings, richer percussion and much more complex piano melodies. Songs such as "Electric Storm", "A Little Too Late" and "Miscommunication" portray this darker musical identity perfectly.
Whilst the album may be missing easy-charting potential, such as "Lost Without You", it makes it up with everything else. The powerful vocals, lyrics and deeper instrumentals prove that Delta has matured dramatically as an artist and we can only expect even stronger material in the future.
