It's nearly time for the World Cup, and after nine weeks with a "Crazy" No. 1 single, it's time for all the World Cup releases. The first out of the gate is Tony Christie with this "Amarillo" re-write. Mr Christie spent seven weeks at No. 1 last year when the original was re-released in aid of Comic Relief, and now he's at it again, this time with all proceeds going towards Sport Relief. The song is still as addictive as ever, but in my opinion, this re-write isn't quite as good as the original. I recommend you buy it in Aid of Sport Relief, and to spur our boys on in the World Cup.
Four years ago, we were a year on from "Hey Baby (Uhh Ahh)" by DJ Otzi, and it got reworked for the World Cup. This time, Tony Christie's "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo" is the 'novelty smash of last year to be World Cupped up'. Oh dear. The main problem is that "England, Win the World Cup" simply doesn't have as many syllables as "Is this the way to Amarillo?", making it sound so spectacularly forced, it's unreal! Will it be a big hit? Let's just hope people have a bit of sense, eh?
