        • Blockbuster soundtracks that conquered the Official UK Albums Chart

A chart-topping soundtrack is rarely seen in the UK these days - we look at the ones who managed it (or came close).

          Evita - Madonna (1996)

Helmed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Alan Parker, Evita and its music was a big change both visually and vocally for its leading lady Madonna.

The collection reached Number 1 in the UK 13 weeks after its release and earned Madonna another three Top 10 singles: You Must Love Me, Another Suitcase in Another Hall and, of course, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. At the time of writing the soundtrack has sold 733,000.

          • Another day, another lowered Madonna sales in UK

In 2015 they reported sales from 21st century and they were 86,788

When fans combined it from YEC sales (#46 in 1996 and #23 in 1997) and added estimated sales from 1998 and 1999 they got to around 835,000.

So after several singles lost +100k sales in recent years now it's up to albums

            • Your numbers are wrong, Westen (see below):

              Top UK Albums 1996

              #47 - Evita OST - Original Cast Recording - 260,000

              Top UK Albums 1997

              #23 - Evita OST - Original Cast Recording - 380,000

              260,000 + 380,000 + 87,000 = 727,000

Updated UK sales est. is 733,000 (meaning it sold 6,000 during 1998 & 1999).

              • There is no way it sold 3k per year in 98 (when it spent 5 weeks on chart) and 99 and then went on to sell 6k per year 2000-2015

And i doubt it sold 0 copies during last 3 years.

                • Re: Madonna :: Charts & Sales History

                  It re-entered with these 5 weeks, in March/April 1998:

                  (RE 21/03/1998): 164-108-133-186-190

That's probably 3-4k worth of sales there, do we know why it re-entered? I would think it was probably a sale with retailers selling the last of their stock.

Once its out of the chart, it probably isn't selling much of anything - it's not like the charts these days, where records can quietly sell a few thousand each year because there's constant access to music. Once it's off the charts, it loses its space within retail,

I agree, based on what we have, 733,000 does feel questionable - but that said, it's probably not far off reality.

                  • It's impossible that it sold 3-4k in 1998 during its chart run and then 0k until the end of the year, and then 2k in 1999, and from 2000 to 2015 it was selling 6k per year. It's simply not possible that sales suddenly jumped in 00s.

Most of its 87k in 21st century probably came from first half of decade, when she was still huge in UK, so it's really not possible that it went from almost nothing in 98 and 99 to +10k (for example) per year 00-05

This already happened to plenty of her singles

                    • Where do you think this music was sold from 1998 through 2005? When it's out of the chart, it loses its place in shops - back in the 90s, there wasn't downloads and e-commerce wasn't what it is today. So don't be surprised that it literally sold next to nothing for a great number of years/

I would hazard a guess that 95%+ of its sales came after 2004 in the UK after downloads took off and music really started to find its place amongst online shopping (though that is a guess - like yours).

She was really huge in UK in late 90s and early 00s, i believe she was stocked well, ROL charted for years, she had albums reentering charts all the time. There is no way such a irrelevant release sold almost 87k in 10 years (05-15)

Unless these numbers exclude unknown club sales, that would explain a lot.
