  • Australian singles chart runs from the 1980s:

    - Pre-June 1988: taken from the Kent Music Report (re-named the Australian Music Report in 1987). ARIA licensed the top 50 portion of this chart, from mid-1983 until early June 1988.

    - From June 1988: sourced from the ARIA charts.

    • Some of the sales estimates for singles in Australia on page 1 of this thread are quite inflated, I think, e.g. 'Gambler' selling 30k. It only spent 7 weeks in the top 40. Also, for Australian sales figures over 140k from the 1980s - the biggest-selling single of the decade only has a 1x platinum certification.

I'm inclined to believe the one that is closer to a certification (probably eligible by now) is "MDNA" and not "Rebel Heart", back in 2012 the music industry was healthier and her fanbase was larger too, so pure sales for "MDNA" were higher tan RH's in probably 90% of markets, Germany included IMO.
As the chartrun for Rebel Heart was better overall, spending lots of weeks in the Top 30, I'd tend to say that its sales could be overall better than MDNA's. Then again sales in 2012 were higher than in 2015 but MDNA's chartrun wasn't that good, compared to Rebel Heart. So I don't know.

        • Does anyone have nay updates on ITG? Last I heard it was almost at the 1m sales in the UK, and would become her first million seller here?
I have a bad feeling about this.

          • Is this the first year where Madonna's RSD releases have made no chart impact in the UK?

I was about to ask about this as well. I do wonder if there was too much competition? Or if the release was way too limited? Strange, I was expecting a top 20 placing at least. Shame!

How do they even count? They're basically EP's as they have multiple songs in the tracklist, but they're a re-release of Japanese single editions!?!?! Maybe they've fallen into some trick territory.

WW edition of TRUE BLUE (SUPER CLUB MIX) is 13,000 and LA ISLA BONITA (SUPER MIX) is 12,500. Maybe they've just been allocated in such a way they couldn't have made an impact. And at midnight remaining RSD titles were put online by stores. I just checked and both are available, so there seems to be a lot of them left.

                  - 15 weeks on chart

                  --

Both albums spent the same amount of weeks on chart and even though "Rebel Heart" was more stable in the Top 40 than "MDNA" the industry was smaller than it was in 2012 (this means that one week of "MDNA" could have outsold two weeks of "RH" and we don't know that), also, while "RH" did spend 3 more weeks than "MDNA" inside the Top 40 "MDNA" spent 1 extra week inside the Top 10 and another one more week inside the top 20, this is also valuable because one extra week in the top 10 alone could be equal to 2 or 3 weeks inside the top 40.

RH was more stable and I don't think that can be put on doubt, but it doesn't necessarily mean that RH sold more, also it's not that weird to have an album with a "better" chart run selling less than a previous album with "weaker" chart-run, that kind of stuff has already happened.

                      • DAD is a bit of a cheat though as it was made for a movie (even though it fits AL like a glove sound wise). But impressive nonetheless!

I wonder how quickly Medellin will join this list but there is a slim chance that it will be close to 10 million in the first week of May, I reckon, depending on the video's and the live performance's effect of course.

By the way, how to get these figures? And are there similar totals available for other streaming sites (Apple Music or Deezer for example)?

                            • "Die Another Day" is indeed a cheat but it made the cut on AL album's tracklist since the begninning and unlike "American Pie" it was not an international bonus track, it was a main standard track, in consequence Her "American Life" album ended up with one of it's songs in the Top 10 thanks to this manipulation or move Madonna did.

It was fishy but since the song is there on the album I can't just remove it out.

                              Nonetheless impressive.
Rock lives forever: Led Zeppelin . Metallica . Pink Floyd . Nirvana . Radiohead . Pearl Jam . Oasis . Iron Maiden . Nine Inch Nails

Like American Pie on Music,Madonna didn't want DAD on American Life either.
                                It's Warner's "fault" .

                                • BIM was certainly a video sensation only because 294M views vs 51M streams on Spotify is like 1:6, anyway I’m sure that Medellín will pull through and finish between 40-50M and that MX will cross the 192M streams that has RH and with less songs, if the disco song and the other Maluma and Anitta song do good, this album could hit 300M in the end.

I have to say, I’ve never heard this once about DAD.
I have a bad feeling about this.

How does it work again...how many streams of an album is counted as one sold?

Thanks! Madonna's team said they were working to combine videos.

I wonder why PDP and LAB have not been done yet?

                                                  April 22, 1989
30 years ago: Madonna's Like a Prayer ascended to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set spawned smashes in the title cut, "Express Yourself," "Cherish" (both reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100), "Oh Father" (No. 20) and "Keep It Together" (No. 8).

The Material Girl has just announced new material: her album Madame X arrives June 14; first, she'll perform on the Billboard Music Awards on May 1, sharing the stage with Maluma on their duet first single from the set, "Medellín."
