Not to mention that its one of her most international albums, it is her only +9m / +10m selling album that didn't go muti-platinum in the USA. Albums like "Madonna", "Something to remember" and "Music" that sold around the same were no less than 3x Platinum in US, and she even had albums that went muti-platinum in US that ended selling less than "Confessions" on a WW scale like "Erotica", "Bedtime stores" and several compilations.

Well, Sonny and Cher were big in the mid 60s and Cher was quite big in the US in the early 70s, she was the 1st female artist to score 4 #1 hits on Hot 100 by 1974. The business was different in those times though - no huge promotions, no videos, no MTV... by the time those things appeared and were used as promo tools to make artists huge, Cher was already a veteran act, but nonetheless she did just fine and managed to get mainstream comebacks in each decade since....
