"New record" as in "new achievement" (new peak in daily streams that is) not in "new music" lmao

Madonna is a risqué artist for Christmas songs. People prefer safer artists singing Xmas songs and carols and personally Christmas market is beneath Madonna (just as Las Vegas is).

    Yes, those can!
I think "Music" can be marketed as that as well and probably a couple other Madonna songs.
They just need to choose one to focus on but I believe they are now focused on other stuff - maybe another year.

Ok, you guys don't like Dear Jessie or, rather, think Madonna doesn't "need" a Holiday classic and that is "below her". Whatever.
Um lol ok those songs are all winter themed. Dear Jessie is a lullaby that has nothing to do with snow or xmas or jingle balls.

I love Dear Jessie but I dont think it would ever become a xmas staple regardless of M or fans trying to make it happen. Its simply not festive enough nor has any lyrics that would make people want to play it on a christmas playlist.

And if this is "how big an album is", well, Music was bigger than Like a prayer in the UK (5x platinum vs "only" 4), yet Dear Jessie outcharted and outsold What It feels like for a girl, which was only a third single. What a dumb argument to diminish its success.
Dear Jessie sold well while on the charts but don't forget that Blond Ambition started worldwide 4 months later while this was still the "active" Madonna single in UK benefiting from Madonna media exposure too. "Like a Prayer" other singles were all certified Silver or higher by BPI (despite "Express Yourself" being less weeks on TOP 5 and TOP 10 than "Dear Jessie" it did sold more in the long run) and also helped a lot more album sales as well (just look at the album charts the weeks those songs were released and after that). As "Dear Jessie" was released later one can't say that people that loved the song also loved the previous singles and have already got the album so it's a complicated analysis to make. It's impossible to compare it the way you want to because charts places are always relative to other songs released at the same time among other factors.

"Look of Love" didn't even had a video for starters... and was a release from an OST of a not so successful movie that by then already cooled of and Madonna only promotion of it was her first world tour.
"What It Feels Like For a Girl" was a dance song on the video while on the radio and the album it was a ballad. Kind of mixed up promo there for this one (even on the tour it was the spanish version of the song she sang as well..). There was a single with the ballad version and another with the remixes as well - total mess.

"Like a Prayer" album was released almost a year before "I'm Breathless" was released and then 18 months later "The Immaculate Collection" did canibalize many of both those albums potential long time sales. Also "Blond Ambition Tour" was not focused on "Like a Prayer" album but on almost all Madonna Hits and "I'm Breathless" (she did 5 songs from "Like A Prayer" - the 5 US TOP 20 singles).

Despite "Music" have had GHV2 released also 14 months later and having all the 3 singles featuring there the "Drowned World Tour" was mainly focus on "Ray of Light" and "Music" albums and certainly helped sales somehow as well. Also in 2001 "Music" have had a Tour limited edition release with a double disc that also helped the album to sell a bit more. ("Music" was the #10 best selling album in UK in 2000 and #41 in 2001 while GHV2 was #20 in 2001 to not be on Year End charts ever again - nothing like "Like a Prayer" vs "The Immaculate Collection" that was still at #90 best selling album of 2001 !!!).

Charts places are always pretty relative to whatever other music and artists have new songs at the time (not "are"... more "were" - now with streams can also be old songs or artist that are trending now - but still relative). Strategy with release schedules and luck also play a big part here. Also single sales were higher in 1989 than in 1994 (in 1993/1994 singles sales dropped a lot in Europe and labels were more and more focus in selling albums instead - not sure about US but was probably the same).

There isn't one definte factor that defines chart placements, chart history, single sales and album sales. There are plenty of different factors that influence charts and sale. The kind of simplistic analysis you are doing it's dangerous distorting a lot the reality and leaves out 80% of the history that is full of cause/effect events.
