I know this thread has mostly been about Spotify, so I hope you don't mind a historical question.
I've been trying to figure out why "Into the Groove" did not chart on Billboard's Radio Songs chart (at the time known as the Hot 100 Airplay chart). For context I'm sure many here know: "Into the Groove" was not released as a single in the U.S. Therefore, it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100, since at the time it was required for a single to have a physical release to appear on the chart (a rule that changed in late 1998 to allow airplay-only hits to chart). "Into the Groove" was released as the B-side for the 12-inch single version of "Angel," and thus did chart as "Angel/Into the Groove" on the Dance 12-Inch Singles Sales chart.
But "into the Groove" itself garnered significant radio airplay in the United States, even though it wasn't an official single. On the Radio & Records top 40 chart, "Into the Groove" peaked at #6 in June 1985. Yet "Into the Groove" never appeared on the Radio Songs chart at that time, even though that airplay chart tracked very closely with R&R's top 40 chart (both were based on top 40 radio stations' playlists).
The Radio Songs chart was fairly new at the time--Billboard first started publishing it as a top 30 in mid 1984. Hence the omission of "Holiday" and "Borderline" from the Radio Songs chart stats shown in this thread in post #28, as they charted before Radio Songs was published. My thought is that Billboard must have had a rule at the time that a song had to be physical single to even qualify for the Radio Songs chart--a rule it later changed, as evidenced by the fact that "Spotlight" was allowed to chart on Radio Songs in early 1988 when it was played on top 40 radio but was not released as a single. Does anyone know whether this was a charts rule issue? An omission? Or something else? I'm very curious.Check out my new blog! http://wwadh.blogspot.com

Non-7-inch-singles were not eligible for the airplay chart at the time; that rule must have changed 1986/1987, as Bon Jovi's "Never Say Goodbye" charted there, I believe, before "Spotlight."
Billboard did chart "Into the Groove" on Hot Black Singles, where it peaked at No. 19 (her third-highest peak, after "Like a Virgin" and "Vogue"), a notch higher than "Like a Prayer."
Radio & Records was a better/more representative airplay chart than Billboard's, and then R&R's CHR/Pop chart was also was a better outlet than Billboard's Mainstream

Thank you so much Music126 and Holidayguy! That makes sense. And yes, I saw that "Into the Groove" charted on the Hot Black chart (today the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart). The label and number listed on that chart for the song were Sire 0-20335, which was the 12" version of "Angel" with "Into the Groove" as its b-side. So the eligibility rules for the Hot Black chart must have been different. Interesting.Check out my new blog! http://wwadh.blogspot.com
