God Whitney Houston is no longer with us, dead artists do FAR better than alive ones. Rock artists do thousand times better than female acts. Let's not forget what Whitney's reputation was before she died. Madonna is doing fine, there's room for improvement and I am sure we all are aware of it, but to say she is doing poorly and being "destroyed" is surface level. Most of the streams stem from playlisting anyway, easy to playlist when some artists' careers rely on one or two hits than dozens like her.

If Madonna's catalogue had the same performance as Whitney (basically adjusted for the size of their respective catalogues), she would have 6.28 billion streams. Which is far from where she is. And that has to do with poor management but also Madonna's own behavior since about 2010 or so, particularly on social media, which has even repulsed longtime fans who stuck with her for decades.

The problem with streaming is that it is for large part in the hands of a new generation of teenagers and 20-somethings who have only known the 2010s Madonna, with zero new hit songs and a lot of bad press and image mismanagement, so for the most part they are not willing to search and discover her catalogue on Spotify.
As for the Whitney comparison, you should also factor in her premature death, which in my opinion gives her a boost in post-mortem popularity . Still, I agree with wowsignal14's point that Madonna's streams could be so much better. We're talking about someone who was called "The Queen of Pop".Last edited by castorino; Sun January 30, 2022, 07:59.

Whitney had “destroyed her image” big time before passing, same for George Michael, same for MJ, same for Amy.
They passed and are now able to chart their GHs better than her, they became legendary.
Madonna is still having fun on IG, better for her tbh. One day (I hope at 100) she will pass and start selling well on catalogue charts."Despair, regret, and tenderness is what I feel for you"

Actually streams has nothing to do with the initial sales.
People paid for Madonna’s albums because she’s popular at that time and the music is good.
It also depended on whether they were willing and able to pay for that.
Whitney’s debut album sold 3 million copies more than her second album.
But her second album gets 500 million more streams than her debut album.
Streaming reflects how many people are listening to the artists.
For example, 2.54M views of her youtube views came from Brazil last week, only 1.01M views came from UK.
She sold 23 million albums and millions of singles(over 30 million records) in UK but only six million albums in Brazil.
How could you explain this? wowsignal14
https://charts.youtube.com/artist/%2...T00%3A00%3A00Z
Madonna was popular in Brazil during 80s and 90s, but the music market of Brazil was smaller than UK which resulted the lower sales comparing to UK.
In streaming era, Brazil will certainly overtake UK due to the larger population
Another case.

Mariah carey was popular in Asia during 90s, She sold 20 million records in Japan.
How many albums had she sold in Philippines?
Less than 1 million copies.
Last week 2.43M of her total Youtube views came from Philippines and only 475K views came from Japan.
I know youtube is not popular in Japan, even if we take into account other streaming platforms, streams in Japan still won't be 20 times as much as the streams in Philippines.
So stop wondering why madonna's streams are not good enough , she's doing decent on All platforms. That's enough.Last edited by britneyliam; Sun January 30, 2022, 11:00.

And btw delegitimize Madonna being head of Whitney in streaming, counting the numbers of release it’s clutching at straws tbh.
M has ( at the moment) more streams than any other big female who debuted prior 1990, that u like it or not, end of .
is Madonna a streaming force in general?? she is NOT, and to deny that would be delusional……. But there is a certain sign of improvement lately, and as a fan it’s quite exciting to see.

therefore historically Madonna's discography is 1.57 times bigger. yet today we see they basically have the same amount of streams (4 Billion)
4 billion * 1.57 = 6.28 billion
As we seen here before there was actually offiical Warner Music and Billboard info that Madonna in 2009 was already at over 275 million albums sold (75 million in US + 200 million abroad) and yet Chartmasters claims that in 2022 Madonna sold 244.5 (on a method that joins her also underestimated single sales to make them albums) saying her album real sales are at 202 million (so 73 millions less than official 2009 info we have!!! Sure, why not?). That's a very real credible source from a website managed by a known Michael Jackson fan (that was always known to downplay Madonna sales on forums before having that side).
https://books.google.gr/books?id=EX4...ecords&f=false
Also let's not forget Madonna is still alive and dead people sell well and have lots of streams increments that usually become kind of permanet if their catalog is well managed (and they are doing a good job promoting Whitney). Whiney died when streaming was beggining.
Please compare with someone that is alive (preferable a female that also makes pop music too). Thanks!Last edited by MadNuno; Sun January 30, 2022, 13:41.

whitney had a a streaming hit with a younger act 2 years ago, which boosted her streams tooBlue hydrangea, cold cash divine. Cashmere, cologne and white sunshine.
Red racing cars, sunset and vine. And we were young and pretty.

I'm not sure why people feel the need to drop into this thread and tell us all how horrible Madonna is.
This happens a lot here at UKmix. In a lot of artist threads.
Guy Oseary only cares about $700 concert tickets. Madonna herself says she does not like to look back. She is always thinking about her next project.
This is why there have been no deluxe album re-issues. No updated RIAA certs.
Her Spotify is a mess. Her YouTube has been a mess since it started. We know this. No one has to remind us.
