Super Bowl Halftime Performers Looking for a Boost Are Better Off Solo
In 2016, Coldplay made one of the five biggest gains in the 13-year measurement period, up 347.9% to 115,000 album consumption units (from 33,000 to 148,000), when it tapped the star power of Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. But the 2012 lineup — a group of five, like 2022’s, headlined by Madonna with Nicki Minaj, LMFAO, M.I.A. and Cee Lo Green as guests — did not yield the same results, with Madonna’s consumption units only moving 212.7% from 17,000 to 54,000. Still, if anyone can beat the law of averages, it’s explosive performers like Eminem and Lamar.

A while back they gave us a more accurate description of her true gains following her SB performance - as it included the MDNA album pre-orders, MDNA Tour sold out shows and GMAYL downloads
Here's their article from 2013:
A year ago, Madonna took the Super Bowl stage on Sunday, Feb. 5 – two days after she premiered her new single “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” It was the lead track from her MDNA album, which became available to pre-order exclusively on iTunes Feb. 3, as well.
Two days after the Super Bowl, Madonna’s MDNA tour was announced, with the first dates going on sale Feb. 10.
...
Label sources said that 50,000 pre-orders were placed for Madonna’s MDNA album in its first three days of availability through the close of business on Feb. 5 (the day of the Super Bowl). That same week, her new single moved 115,000 downloads while her catalog of older albums saw a 410% surge in sales (going from 5,000 to 26,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
A week later, after the show had a full week’s worth of impact, “Luvin'” sold a further 165,000 downloads (up 44%), while the rest of her songs moved a combined 166,000 (up from 94,000 the previous week).

Let's be honest, without the SuperBowl halftime show, GMAYL would have never reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, maybe not even the top 40. If instead of GAMYL she had had a strong single, I think it could have had a shot at number one.

GMAYL I believe only made top 10 in the US because you could download it when you pre-ordered the album, and those downloads counted towards the Hot 100 at the time. There was also a bit of Payola going on, as a deal was struck to play the song on radio every hour across the Super Bowl weekend.
I actually really enjoy GMAYL but for me the real failing was that the demo leaked in 2011 and everyone turned against it. Had it not been heard until Madonna chose to release it, the hype might have been there to push it higher up the chart.
What I’ve never understood is how the Super Bowl audience can be so large - supposedly in excess of 100m viewers - and Madonna couldn’t sell a song to 0.5% of the audience. I know this happens to others and performing is not a shortcut to #1 for anyone, but as a fan, it’s a bit annoying because every other lead single she’s ever released probably would have gone to #1 had it been backed by the Super Bowl slot.
The biggest issue is that she literally performed the best song from MDNA that could have been performed - Girl Gone Wild, Gang Bang, I’m Addicted and I’m a Sinner would never have been allowed.
I have a bad feeling about this.
