La Isla Bonita is actually a monster hit around the world. Chart peaks might not reflect that but it's definitely in top 3 among most popular M songs. Especially for casual fans.

On Spotify La Isla Bonita is behind LAP, LAV, MG and Vogue only (among her old hits).
It's definitely one of her most remembered song from the 80s! It was huge in Europe, not as much in the US (although it's the biggest selling catalog seller among True Blue singles).
It's kinda amazing how successful she was in 00s and yet her success is always downgraded. I mean all singles she released in that decade were top 10 singles worldwide (excluding Miles Away and Love Profusion)
Rihanna scores her 21st top five Hot 100 hit, tying Elvis Presley for the fifth-most top fives in the chart's history, which dates to Aug. 4, 1958. (Notably, Presley's career launched two years before the chart began.) Here's a look at the acts with the most top five hits, as Rihanna breaks out of a tie with two icons, each with 20:
Most Top Five Hot 100 Hits
29, The Beatles 28, Madonna
26, Mariah Carey
24, Janet Jackson
21, Elvis Presley
21, Rihanna
20, Michael Jackson
20, Stevie Wonder
German and France market were very different at the time, foreign songs barely charted high.
That's not really true, especially in the case of Germany where the following acts scored number 1 hits in the 80s:
- Phil Collins (2)
- Stevie Wonder (2)
- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (3)
- Mel & Kim (2)
- Whitney Houston (2)
- Pet Shop Boys (3)
- Rick Astley (2)
- each of the following has also had at least one #1: Duran Duran, Abba, Soft Cell, Kim Carnes, Paul McCartney, OMD, Kylie Minogue, Bee Gees (and Robin Gibb as a solo artist), Culture Club, Paul Young, Kajagoogoo, Depeche Mode, Rod Stewart, Laura Branigan, Tears For Fears, Elton John, Tina Turner, A-Ha, Europe, Roxette, Bangles, Status Quo, France Gall, Sinead O'Connor, Taylor Dayne etc.
Madonna was just very unlucky with a lot of high peaking singles missing the top spot (the most memorable losers were "Like A Prayer" and later "Frozen", both stuck at #2 for many weeks).

This was already discussed here, and German users here confirmed what I said in the past.

The list you posted include biggest 80s act, and they barely have one or two no. 1s in the whole decade. Michael Jackson had no number one singles in the 80s in Germany IIRC.
So this list actually proves Western point rather than contradicting him. Maybe "barely charted high" is a bit of an exaggeration, but what he meant was clearly that the market was harder to break, in those specific countries. And that is definitely true (especially for France)
I don't agree that Madonna was just unlucky. Were Michael and Whitney unlucky too for having, respectively, 0 and 2 number ones? The market was just different.
Rihanna scores her 21st top five Hot 100 hit, tying Elvis Presley for the fifth-most top fives in the chart's history, which dates to Aug. 4, 1958. This is amazing, Madonna only need one more hit to macth The Beatles' record.
It shows that how Madonna ranked #2 on Greatest Hot 100 Artists of All Time. People keep arguing Mariah has a lot more number-one songs than Madonna, while in fact Madonna has the most top ten and second most top five.
Out of those 28 top five hits, 'only' 12 reached #1. She has so many iconic #2 hits that should have been #1... Material Girl, Express Yourself, Frozen, etc
On OfficialCharts.com, we'll be marking the occasion throughout the summer with a series of special features and interviews on the beloved format, kicking off in early July with the unveiling of the 60 biggest selling albums of all time.
They'll also be a major in-store "60 at 60" albums campaign at retailers including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Amazon and Morrisons this summer, promoting some of the UK's biggest selling albums.

Well, having 2 number 1's in a decade is nothing unlucky for sure, 0 for a big act is indeed.
The market is different all the time and keeps on evolving so that's not an argument proving that 80's were harder to "break" for international acts. It might have been the case in France where local acts used to reign supreme but the German charts have always been full of overseas influx. Regarding number 1's, due to the different dynamics of the charts, stars from the noughties have had bigger chances of reaching the top spot compared to the 80's (especially in the release week) but now with the inclusion of streaming it's all slowing down again. Despite being huge or at least very popular throughout the 21st century and benefitting from the period of dynamic charts, the following international acts have never had a German number 1: Coldplay, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Justin Bieber, Enrique Iglesias, Avril Lavigne, Nicki Minaj, Linkin Park, Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and many others. Not to mention that Beyoncé's spent only one single week at the German top (partly thanks to her partner Shakira), the same is true for Drake meanwhile stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Bruno Mars, Jay-Z, Flo Rida or Jason Derulo have also only managed one #1 in spite of countless collaborations and featuring's.
It's funny how Ray Of Light did that well in Germany when in terms of singles, Frozen peaked at #2 (#12 on the year-end singles chart), Ray Of Light peaked at #28 (LOL!), Drowned World/Substitute For Love at #39, The Power Of Goodbye at #4 (#79 and #89 in the YE charts there in 1998 and 1999) and Nothing Really Matters peaked at #38.
I have a feeling that even if the singles weren't that huge, they did a lot for the album, and the fact that TPOG was big around Christmas, that gave the album a big boost. Does anyone know the album's chart run in Germany?

Ray Of Light was selling like crazy in Germany. I can clearly remember it went back to #1 around Christmas 1998...
Does anyone know the album's chart run in Germany?
date of chart entry: 16.03.1998
date of chart exit: 16.10.2000
peak: #1 (6 weeks, 4 weeks in March/April 1998 and 2 weeks in January 1999)
weeks on chart: 83
I think your list doesn't quite show the "highest certified" albums but the biggest sellers instead. In terms of certifications there are many other 3xP, 4xP and even 5xP that got certified under new criterias when Platinum was downgraded to 300K and then downgraded to 200K.
Rock lives forever: Led Zeppelin . Metallica . Pink Floyd . Nirvana . Radiohead . Pearl Jam . Oasis . Iron Maiden . Nine Inch Nails Approved Popstars: Michael Jackson . Madonna . Britney Spears . Beyoncé . Rihanna

Must be in the 4,3-4,4 million copies range with club sales
In US club sales were relevant until around 2002. What about in the UK? Were they popular until early 00s too? And how can you calculate / estimate club sales in UK?

11/2006 - 3,402,160
11/2007 - 3,541,000
04/2008 - 3,558,825
(weird, only 17,000 in 5 months, while during the year before it sold almost 140k).
Don't have many info about it after Celebration, I really thought it would sell well even though it was cancelled for a long time and then confinef to the midprice album... and it did!
200,000 despite all of this, and with a new compilation out which sold further 600k (and ALL of the tic tracks bar one were a part of it).
Fabulous!
I mean, almost what MDNA and RH did, combined!
@MrLeonix
Club sales were huge everywhere.
ROL club sales leaked in 2000, the album is over 2,100,000 counting them.

Thanks. Interesting do you have a full Madonna list with her album totals with club sales?
Does this also mean that Britney's early albums total sales from 1999, 2000, 2001 are higher with club sales?

I only have ROL (+200k) and TIC (+600k) for Madonna. Can't remember the source for TIC though, it may be someone here at ukmix.
True blue was also certified 7xP (2,1m) in 1992, despite having surpassed the 2m mark in retail sales 23 years later.
No idea about Britney!
EDIT: just found out that the 600k club sales for TIC were just calculated, as it was certified 12xP (3,6m) when its retail sales were just above the 3m mark.
Assuming there were some copies shipped of the album back in 2003, I believe club sales must be around 500k, at least!
