Unfortunately South Africa don't have official sales charts (singles/albums) since the late 80s.
The most known chart is from springbok and it was off since 1989.
                      http://www.rock.co.za/files/springbok_top_20_(M).html

Also don't have official airplay chart.
Only radio stations or votes charts.
It has been discussed 15 years ago!

And a local member said Five FM chartsits NOT a true reflection of what is popular in the country, only a reflection of what the 5FM DJs like.

The Chart he posted is from "5FM Radio" formerly known as "Radio 5".
Just everything chart related after year 1988 and before Mediaguide in 2013.
It is even not about sales.
Even Portugal closed its single chart since 1993 because of decrease in sales.

Yes, single sales were pretty low during 1992 as record labeld didn't put much CD-singles on the market and vinyl singles were disapearing - their goal was to sell albums and if singles were not available people had to buy albums instead.

Then the chart reopened during mid 2000's and "Music" peaked #01, as well as "Die Another Day", "American Life" (even 2003 the EP "Remix and Revised" peaked #01 on Portuguese Single Charts as well - in some countries did not chart on Albums Chart but Singles Chart). Then they close it again later in the end of 2003 (wasn't it - as "Me Agaisnt The Music" did not chart again) as CD singles were declining. It re-open again (not sure when... 2016, earlier?).

Since 2008 and during early 10's the Portuguese Digital Song Sales published by Billboard was the only Portuguese official single chart available - despite not being the same Official Single Charts as digital songs were representing over 95% of single sales in Portugal and only the TOP 10 was published I'm pretty sure it showed the real best selling singles in the country. "4 Minutes" was #01 in 2008 while "Give It To Me" peaked #02 that year too. "Celebration" was #06 in 2009 while "Give Me All Your Luvin" was #04 in 2012.

It's a pitty that during the "STR, "ROL" and "COADF" eras an official single charts didn't exist in Portugal as Madonna would have collected a few more TOP 10 and #01 Hits in Portugal.

After 2012 only "Medellin" would peak again TOP 10 at #04 in 2019 on Portuguese Digital Song Sales as well as "Faz Gostoso" that peaked #03. But by 2019 streaming was already a thing and there was already a Portguuese Official Single Charts again where streaming was having much more weight so digital song sales were not very high and these songs can never be considered TOP 10 Hits in a Portuguese Official Single Chart (as they were not TOP 10 there).

Madonna have so many big hits that the attention to them is always divided and end ups on just half a dozen songs.
Most playlists try to have more artist diversity and that harms someone like Madonna - the biggest himaker of all time.

I've read it in a lot of places (physical magazines from late 80's - not sure how accurate they were) but on the internet there are few places saying it as well.

"Papa Don't Preach" ended up at #01 on Mediattrafic Year End Charts for 1986 ("True Blue" was #04 and "Live To Tell" was #08).
                                              http://www.mediatraffic.de/countdown1986.htm

In US was #29 song of the year on Billboard Hot 100 (that includes also airplay - "Live To Tell" was #35 and "True Blue" was #76)
In UK was #08 song of the year (only sales chart - "True Blue" was #11 - only have TOP 40 so I don't know about "Live To Tell")

In European Charts "Papa Don't Preach" was #01 of 1986 (only sales but based on chart points, not real sales - "Live To Tell" was #10, "True Blue" #33 and "Dress You Up" was #91)

On Eurocharts Charts 1986 Madonna was also #01 Singles Artist and #01 Albums Artist (On Albums "True Blue" was #01, "Like a Virgin" #11 and "The First Album" was #62 on TOP 100 best sellers of the year in Europe).

If you look at TOP 40 Singles of 1986 in US (that includes airplay) and Europe (sales only but based on chart points) you see that most TOP 40 songs are not the same and have very different places except for 10 songs, the only ones that are on Year End TOP 40 in both US and Europe (including 2 Madonna songs):

"Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna (#01 in Europe and #29 in US)
"Burning Heart" by Surivor" (#04 in Europe and #08 in US)
"Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Ritchie (#12 in Europe and #02 in US)
"When The Going Gets Though" by Billy Ocean (#02 in Europe and #31 in US)
"Take My Breath Away" by Berlin(#29 in Europe and #27 in US)
"Venus" by Bananaram (#08 in Europe and #38 in US)
"Live To Tell" by Madona (#10 in Europe and #35 in US)
"Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel (#18 in Europe and #23 in US)
"Kiss" by Prince (#23 in Europe and #19 in US)
"I Can't Wait" by Nu Shootz (#29 in Europe and #26 in US)

Many artists have had different hits that were hits in both US and Europe but in different years. Many artists have had hits in both sides of the Atlantic but with Different songs making it to the TOP 40 (or even TOP 100) during 1986 (like Whitney Houston).

Now the timeline of Year End Charts it's important abd different in each chart (making sometimes differecens on the outcome for sure):

Billboard Year End is from December 1985 to November 1986
UK Year End is from January 1986 to December 1986
Eurochart Year End is from Mid December 1985 to Mid December 1986
Mediatraffic Year End is from January 1986 to December 1986

By 1986 IFPI have had 72 member countries but their International Standard Recording Code to control sales was only created during that year so they still didn't have global charts or information about best selling single of the year in the world whatsever. There was not a real info about it ever released (at least to my knowledge) so I take the Eurochart and Mediatraffic word for it as it's the closest to reality we probably have.

If anyone have the 1986 Hot 100 Single Sales of the year please be kind to share Madonna songs places there as I'm sure must be higher compared to the Hot 100 of the year (usually they are - except for "Take a Bow" maybe).

There are some sources that put Berlin "Take My Breath Away" at #01 in 1986 (that song is at #02 on Mediattraffic chart). In most charts I came accross for 1986 both songs are always on the TOP 5 but "Burning Heart" by Survivor or "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Ritchie would also be strong contestants based on US and European End Year Charts alone still are even out of TOP 5 in most 1986 year end charts, including on Mediatraffic (still many countries are still missing here and US chart I have also includes airplay but I'm sure there is outhere an Year End Hot 100 Sales Chart much probably that I never had access to).

"That's What Friends Are For" by Dione Warwick and Friends was the #01 of the year on Billboard Hot 100 but it wasn't very successful elsewhere (not even TOP 100 of the year in Europe) during 1986. Still it appears in some websites as the #01 song for 1986 (probably based on Billbard US Hot 100 , I'm not sure but it's weird as the song was not even TOP 100 in Europe Year End). The Communards "Don't Leave Me This Way" that was the #01 in UK (but they were #27 in Europe and were not on the Hot 100 in US Year End Chart).

If we had data (if someone have it) from Canada, Japan, Australia, South American countries or others we could get a clear picture.

In Australia "Papa Don't Preach" was #09 for 1986 (not sure this is right)

In Canada "Papa Don't Preach" was #13 (and "Live To Tell" was #02 and "True Blue" #37- not sure this is right as well)

In both Australia and Canada Survivor or Lionel Ritchie songs are not on the Year End Chart while Berlin Song was #06 in Australia and #23 in Canada for 1986.
