  • FEMALE ARTISTS WITH THE MOST CONSECUTIVE TOP TEN SINGLES
    1. Janet Jackson - 18 (1989-1998)
    2. Madonna - 17 (1984-1989)
    3. Mariah Carey - 11 (1990-1994)
    4. Whitney Houston - 10 (1985-1988)
I don't know how it is for artists in general especially concerning folks like Drake or whatever, so that's why I put "female" in front.

In the UK she had 36 consecutive top tens, followed quickly by a second run of 17.

        Was it "oh father" fault?

        • But Madonnas is just as impressive if you see that in a 5 year period she had 16. While Janets was 2 extra in a 9 year period.

          • Didn't Madonna have 17 consecutive Top 10 hits, and 16 consecutive Top 5 ?

Yes Madonna have 17 consecutive TOP 10's in US.

"Borderline" was TOP 10 being the first for her TOP 10 string while the TOP 5 was "Lucky Star" was the first for her 16 consecutive TOP 5 string.

Yes... "Oh Father" peaked #20... as after that she had another 8 consecutive TOP 10's from "Keep It Togehter" to "Deeper and Deeper".

If only "Oh Father" had got legs to go TOP 10 and she would have 26 consecutive TOP 10 Hits in US.

Do we know why it didn’t go top ten? Was it a strong release window, was there a physical release? Etc.

To be totally honest, both Oh Father and Spanish Eyes felt like deliberate plots to recapture Live To Tell and La Isla Bonita, and neither quite hit the mark.

I think it had to do with the lack of CD single, 12" and artwork for the vinyls (it was released in a plain white slipcase for the 7 inch, but it did have a cover artwork for the cassingle) . The 7 inch only had an edit and Pray for Spanish eyes (album v.) so not a heck of lot of incentive there imho.

It might have gotten lost in the busy Xmas season in '89 too

Radio didn't embrace it all that much, peaking at #22 and for some reason AC stations didn't play it

                            Janet.
Cherish was climbing to no.1 and it was blocked by Miss You Much. When Oh Father was released Miss You Much had just topped BBHot100 and would stay there at the top for one month.
Oh Father video was premiered in mid-November, two-three weeks after the single release. More or less at the same time Janet released a mini-film, both Miss You Much and her second single, Rhythm Nation, were part of this bigger picture.
Fall 1989 was all for Janet, her album and string of singles.

                            • The thing to remember, is if Oh Father didn’t flop and miss the top ten in the US, Warner wouldn’t have asked Madonna for a b-side for Keep It Together and Vogue wouldn’t exist.

                                      Indeed!
If only "Oh Father" single have been a bit more promoted to radio and the physical release was a bit more actractive the #10 placement was a real possibility.

Since "Holiday" released in 1983 Madonna never failed to chart a song inside the Hot 100 until "Hollywood" failed to chart 20 years later in 2003 (and until 1993 all even went TOP 20 and until 1995 all went TOP 40).

                                      Madonna have had:

                                      27 consecutive TOP 20s
                                      32 consecutive TOP 40s
49 consecutive HOT 100 singles - not songs (based on streaming the album as today happen) but SINGLES promoted (much probably a record for a female artist).

Janet Jackson have had next 3 singles even failling to chart in the Hot 100 (1 of them charted on Bubbling Under) after her 18 TOP 10 strings (that took 9 years to achieve). After that she did have her last 4 TOP 10 songs of her career so far (including also 2 songs at #01).

Janet did have 6 TOP 20's before her TOP 10's string start bringing her total of consecutive TOP 20, TOP 40 and Hot 100 Singles to 24.

                                      Edit:
Also let's not forget that during the 90's Janet released quite a few promotion airplay only single (that were commercially released in other countries) that would much probably fail to be TOP 10. If they were in fact released as their airplay was weak. She wouldn't get the record she got of consecutive TOP 10 Hits if all singles promoted to the radio have been commercially available (this was probably well managed so that she wouldn't have songs charting low in the Hot 100, not sure if they were even thinking about it but I believe so - only singles that got good airplay were commercially available but in 1999 the rules changed and she got 3 songs promoted to the radio even failing to even chart the Hot 100).

Streaming artist can't get many consecutive TOP 10 Hits as they chart all the album tracks, many of them peaking outside the TOP 10.

The same reason they get so many Hot 100 Hits (Drake will get to 300 soon) is also the same reason they don't get consecutive TOP 10 Hits.
So each time he have an album out he can get many TOP 10's but also a few songs peaking outside breaking his string that same week.

Not sure how would they fair only counting the single releases... probably would do better, still not all their singles peak TOP 10 as they have been having many collaborations (and a few solo efforts) that fail to peak TOP 10 so probably have less than 10 as well but that I would need to check.
