What is it about Erotica that it makes it such steaming poison?

Honestly? It’s a dated, rather repetitive and monotonous album. It’s not a pop album, it’s not a dance album, nor is it a feel good album. The songs are all five to six minutes long (death in the streaming era), and it doesn’t include one of Madonna’s big, a-list hits (which is different to ‘famous songs’). On tour Madonna has mostly ignored it - the only time Madonna performed a song from the album was Deeper and Deeper on RHT. Sure, she did Erotica on CT and Deeper and Deeper on RIT, but they were fundamentally brand new songs. Madonna has spent most of the last thirty years ignoring her output from 1991 - 1997, unless it’s Human Nature or Evita related.

Tho it's my least favorite album, I don't really consider "MDNA" a flop. It sold a LOT based on her name alone. It's the songs that didn't do well and therefore the album lacked any legs. Which of course translated into future releases doing worse and worse.

There own fault. I think in an interview with Madonna and Guy someone asked what promotion they were going to do and Guy said "the SuperBowl is the promotion" so clearly they either didnt care because they were focused on tbe tour or they really thought the SB was enough. Either way it had ramifications on years to come

Erotica never fell into the GP's graces. The album has basically only her fanbase to stream it, therefore it doesn't have better numbers cause many don't do it.

Can't people who were there when these songs were played remember them and give them a Boost? It's not like it's an unknown indie record by a nobody. Well, fans who were there from the beginning are a dying breed, if those songs don't reach a new audience they will never be streamed. Let's hope the tour brings some love back, Rain deserves to be on the setlist.

Erotica is Madonna’s best album but it’s not mainstream and it’s not for most audiences , it’s her most impactful album but it has acclaim it’s just the songs are too long for streaming

It's the most streamed song off the album. It would make sense to me. Deeper and Deeper was performed 3 times I believe and has much lower streams. Rain has potential.

I think that the performance of Erotica is an interesting one; the low streaming doesn't match how the album has sold as a catalogue seller. In the US, for example, I remember Billboard posting an article with the catalogue sales of her albums, and Erotica was in fact one of her strongest; whilst it was never a flop, it suggested that enough members of the general public did give it a chance once the album became detached from the Sex book and began to get reassessed retrospectively. In the UK, again, it sold well at the time of its release despite not selling as much as her other studio albums, and achieved strong catalogue sales.

The streaming era is largely hit centric, and aside from select artists, albums tend not to be consumed in full unless they have been exposed to the public through classics. Erotica has hits, though none are among Madonna's most renowned ones, and as Artoo has said, the album is lengthy for an era during which the attention spans of people have dropped dramatically. Erotica suffers from both of these things despite being an increasingly important album in pop culture and one that was given more respect overtime in the pure sales era.
