.. At the end of the day, there’s no excuses, when a song is going to stick it simply sticks no matter the gimmicks, the promo, the performances, the treatment. The public / audience will have the final word over time.
Criminal always gave signs of being streaming candy

back in 2015 only two years after the video was unblocked the song accumulated 100M views among officials and unofficial uploads

the video at this time had 40 million views

the unofficial audios, lyrics had combined over 60M, this shows how a Youtube hit would’ve been for Femme Fatale standarts

this was before Suicide Squad buzz

according to the Youtube Chart statistics at the time, Criminal collected 260M views on YouTube in 3 years

which is not an unrealistic number since the song has several unofficial videos spread at the plataform

    19,8M

    total: 112,9M views currently

And this are only the +5M unofficial videos

What i’m trying to say is that Criminal indeed had no support from Britney and her team all this years... but it had something that most of Britney singles lacked last decade = a theme, story line

that made the lyric videos so watch worthy
that was what linked the sing with the movie Suicide Squad
That made the song a viral, like is why the album circus is aging so well

seems so obvious right now, I can’t believe how i never realized this... Hold it Against Me never had a chance

Criminal was always my second fave. From start to begin. My cherry pick when album got released. Criminal and HIAM remains as most unique singles from the era.

Yeah I agree. “Hold It Against Me” and “Criminal” were the most unique and interesting singles and music videos from that era.

I’m glad “Criminal” is getting justice after some years.

                          • Thank you Mr.Leonix for the yearly Spotify lists! Much appreciated. Do we have a thread on ukmix that includes the most streamed songs from all artists (male and bands included) from each year?

Sorry for the off topic in the Britney thread.

                              • Wow thank you very much^^^. I've always been interested in history and statistics and ended up studying that in school so these types of lists I always find interesting. Plus I grew up in the 90s/2000s so it's cool to see which songs have stood the test of time and are still popular, and which ones have faded away.

It's nice to see Toxic doing so well although that was never one of my favourite Britney songs back in the day when it was released. Only recently I started appreciating it again. It has a killer baseline and still sounds fresh and wild.

I'm surprised to see Oops song only number 12 of the year 2000. Do you know if it is gaining faster than any of the songs above to make it higher on the list eventually? That's actually my favourite Britney song ever

I only became a fan in 2017 so I might be wrong but I think Oops actually wasn’t doing that well at first but it started growing massively on streaming around 2016

Actually “Oops I Did It Again” was dead and doing like cr*p on streaming just a few years ago and then suddenly the song exploded and escalated pretty fast.

Right now it’s the 12th most streamed song overall from the year 2000 but if you noticed well it is the only female and also the only pop song out of those 12 songs, which is pretty cool

I was about to post the same but I didn’t want to be shady.

But yeah , release the vinyl of that messy album during a dead period with cr*ppy sales in the market and no competition and you’ll get an easy high peak.

Don't get me wrong, that's way more than I expected for freaking "Britney Jean", but yeah, that's the only reason it charted higher than her other albums.

Pretty shocking that "Oops" is pulling the same numbers as say, "All The Small Things", which has 426 million streams (even more than "Toxic", yet the latter pulls 330k streams a day). A lot of songs that have considerably more streams than "Oops" are currently pulling similar numbers. "It Wasn't Me" is another example. 466 million streams, yet only 254k streams a day (less than "Toxic" and nearly on par with "Oops").

"Oops" will definitely surpass "Stan" and "It's My Life" very soon, which means it'll enter the Top 10.
