So, this is how the late 90s/early 00s divas rank in terms of global album sales according to CM's figures. I thought it'd be interesting to see how they rank in each region (North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Oceania) as all of them tell us a different story. Britney may be the biggest in North America, but is she the biggest anywhere else? P!nk may be the biggest in Oceania, but how does she rank in Asia? Shakira may the biggest in Latin America, but is she as big in Europe? Let's find out

Please note that P!nk was studied just before she dropped "Beautiful Trauma", so I added some estimates for it. Also, Jennifer Lopez hasn't been studied yet so if anyone has some rough estimates, feel free to post them. Africa has been excluded as there's only one relevant music market (South Africa) and accurate figures are pretty much impossible to find. All credit goes to MJD for his hard work.

    North America
    1. Britney Spears - 43,050,000
    2. Destiny's Child - 23,285,000
    3. Alicia Keys - 21,540,000
    4. Christina Aguilera - 20,720,000

    7. Avril Lavigne - 15,340,000
    8. Shakira - 13,180,000

    Europe

    3. Shakira - 13,120,000
    4. Alicia Keys - 10,100,000
    5. Beyoncι - 9,030,000
    6. Destiny's Child - 8,320,000
    7. Avril Lavigne - 7,920,000
    8. Christina Aguilera - 7,020,000

    Latin America

    2. Britney Spears - 3,720,000
    3. Avril Lavigne - 1,670,000
    4. Christina Aguilera - 1,465,000
    5. Beyoncι - 1,250,000
    6. Destiny's Child - 715,000
    7. P!nk - 530,000
    8. Alicia Keys - 465,000

    Asia
    1. Britney Spears - 8,680,000
    2. Avril Lavigne - 6,870,000
    3. Destiny's Child - 4,690,000
    4. Beyoncι - 2,550,000
    5. Christina Aguilera - 2,225,000
    6. Alicia Keys - 1,695,000
    7. P!nk - 1,370,000
    8. Shakira - 1,215,000

    Oceania
    1. P!nk - 4,275,000
    2. Britney Spears - 1,580,000
    3. Beyoncι - 1,100,000
    4. Avril Lavigne - 1,005,000
    5. Destiny's Child - 905,000
    6. Christina Aguilera - 865,000
    7. Alicia Keys - 725,000
    8. Shakira - 540,000

Britney Spears is the only diva who's Top 2 in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania. She leads in North America, Europe and Asia, with a huge lead over her peers in 2/3 of them. While Shakira obviously beats her in Latin America, Britney's sales are still massive and unmatched by any international female who's not Madonna, Celine Dion or Enya.

P!nk has great numbers in North America and Europe, as well as massive numbers in Oceania where she mops the floor with everybody else. By looking at her numbers in the UK and Australia, you'd think she's the most global. However, we can't ignore the fact that her sales in Asia and Latin America are piss poor. For comparison purposes, her total sales in Asia don't even match the sales of Britney's third studio album. This is the same case in Latin America.

Beyoncι has good numbers everywhere, but her sales in Latin America and Asia could be much better. Still, she's more global than some people give her credit for. Definitely far from being a local artist with at least 1 million sales in every region. Only Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne and Beyoncι have sold at least 1 million albums in each region.

Avril Lavigne is quite underrated when it comes to globalness. She has good results pretty much everywhere, especially in Asia with nearly 7 million albums sold. Although it's pretty clear she's weaker in North America and Europe, where she ranks second to last.

Destiny's Child did great everywhere, except Latin America where their sales are quite disappointing (but expected). I'm actually surprised by how huge they were in Asia. 4 million albums is an amazing result for an R&B girl group that only released four albums.

Shakira is the Queen of Latin America, no doubt about it. She's also done great in Europe and fairly well in North America, but her sales in Oceania and Asia are absolutely terrible. Especially in Asia where she ranks last and is about to get outsold by Ariana Grande.

Alicia Keys has done great in North America and Europe, but her sales in Oceania are fairly disappointing, where she ranks second to last. As expected, her sales in Latin America and Asia are poor, also ranking last in Latin America with not even half a million albums sold.

Christina Aguilera is probably the most shocking case here with terribly low sales in Europe and Asia. Out of all the divas listed here, she's the weakest one in Europe with roughly 7 million album sales. She also fails to break the 1 million mark in Oceania like P!nk, Britney, Beyoncι, and Avril Lavigne all have. However, her sales in North America and Latin America are pretty good. Not massive by any means, but good.

Great to see so many entries for the 2000s as well. She really owned that decade along with Eminem.
Yep . . . Also according to Chartmasters, Britney had the Biggest song from 1998 and the Biggest album from 1999.

I know the 11th position is kinda annoying but she had the highest Teen Pop album on the list and also from position #12 downwards everyone was bellow the 30m mark ..... So "Baby one more time" is just one of the eleven 90s albums with over 30m units on the Chartmasters site.

4 Albums on the list, most dominant female on the list . . . . 4 great successes that came after her already massive debut "Baby one more time" which counts for the 90s decade.

The list does not include compilations ("GH:MP" sold over 6m units) . . . compilation sales were converted into CSPC units which are counted towards studio albums instead.

^ Oh ok thanks guys, so "Make me" is actually closer to 100m than I thought. Its at 94m.

Also TTWE's total rises to over 80m after counting and combining all of its versions.

I also noticed that there are separate totals for album versions and compilations. For example "You drive me Crazy" appears with a total of 21,3m on the album version, then it appears again with an extra total of 4,1m on "The singles collection" and then it appears once again with an extra total of 10,4m on "GHMP" ....... Does that mean the real total of the song is (21,3m + 4,1m + 10,4m) 35,8m right?
Yes, remixes count for the charts and for her totals just like any regular song does. And you're correct about (You Drive Me) Crazy. Overprotected, Boys, Born to Make You Happy and From the Bottom of My Broken Heart all have multiple versions as well.

For some reason, Spotify considers Born to Make You Happy and Born to Make You Happy (Radio Edit) two different songs.

I don't think I'm missing anyone but feel free to correct. Another market where Britney places Top 10.
He has not worked on Tina, who is probably #2.
I forgot about her She's huge in Europe so yeah she's definitely Top 3 if not Top 10. Britney should still end up at #10 tho.

I've noticed there are separate totals for album version and remixes .... Do the album update take into account these remixes or we need to combine them in order to know the overall total of the song?

For example "Make me" appears with a 89,5m total on the album version but bellow it appears with an extra 4,5m total for its remixes, does that mean the song total is 94m? Is it valid to combine the figures?

I also noticed that there are separate totals for album versions and compilations. For example "You drive me Crazy" appears with a total of 21,3m on the album version, then it appears again with an extra total of 4,1m on "The singles collection" and then it appears once again with an extra total of 10,4m on "GHMP" ....... Does that mean the real total of the song is (21,3m + 4,1m + 10,4m) 35,8m right?

Since Germany is now the biggest European music market according to the new IFPI report, I decided to try to put together a list of the best selling international/non-German speaking female artists there.

    1. Madonna - 11,570,000
    2. Celine Dion - 6,335,000+
    3. Whitney Houston - 6,270,000
    4. Enya - 4,580,000
    5. Mariah Carey - 4,255,000
    6. P!nk - 3,670,000
    7. Cher - 3,400,000
    8. Adele - 3,280,000
    9. Britney Spears - 2,910,000
    10. Barbra Streisand - 2,405,000

All numbers come from ChartMasters. Celine's numbers are a bit higher than that as some minor releases are missing, but she's certainly #2.

I don't think I'm missing anyone but feel free to correct. Another market where Britney places Top 10.

Cool, I also think "Womanizer" will hit the mark first.

... BTW the music video is about to break the 200m mark on Youtube. its at 199,961,861 views, it'll be there by tomorrow .... it probably already passed the 200m mark on VEVO anyway.

    20 – Britney Spears – 752,407

In 1999, Britney was the biggest singles artist (male or female)
In 2000, Britney was the biggest female singles artist (Top 5 overall)
In 2004, Britney was the biggest female singles artist (Top 5 overall)
In 2008, Britney was the 7th biggest female singles artists (Top 10 overall)
In 2009, Britney was the 7th biggest female singles artists (Top 20 overall)

It's pretty cool how she was the biggest female hit maker for three years (1999, 2000, 2004), while also remaining Top 5 overall for those years. Overall, she was the best-selling female singles artist of the 2000s, and third overall.

She's really underrated as a hit maker in the UK. Yes, she's been struggling there this decade (other than Scream & Shout which was huge), but that doesn't take away the fact she was getting hit after hit for 10 years.

Britney is performing at the Grand Prix in the USA in October, makes me wonder if she is preparing a new single!
Glad to see glory gradually getting those streams, I hope her next album takes her to 300 million streams globally! And I hope she does pick up on streaming with the next album

Cool! .... "Hold it against me" is eligible to Double Platinum tho, same goes for "Work Bitch" which was around 1,9million units several months ago.

So it should be like this:

Gimme More - 2x Platinum (Undercertified)
Womanizer - 4x Platinum (Not certified)
Hold it against me - 2x Platinum (Not certified)
Work Bitch - 2x Platinum (Undercertified)

I'm glad that "Make me" is a Top 20 Platinum hit in US, now all of her eras are either certified or eligible with at least a Platinum single (if I'm not wrong both "Oops" single and "Slave" are eligible for Platinum in US with SPS units).

Also cool to see "Oops I did it again" single hitting Platinum in UK

Now we can say all her lead singles from the digital/streaming era are at least Platinum in the US And even though the lead single from "In the Zone" hasn't reached that milestone, that album still produced a legendary second single that will be eligible for 4x Platinum soon. 18 years of Platinum hits.

We both posted a few months back that "Make Me" was close to 1 million units in the US. Glad they actually re-certified it.

With about 185million streams between Spotify and Youtube combined the track is predicted to have around 250million streams overall after adding Apple Music, Tidal and other streaming services. It is estimated that 35% from Make me's total streams come from US wich would tally over 583,000 equivalent units in addition to the estimated 375,000 digital sold units in the country giving a 958,000 units total, while this is a rough estimation it is likely certain that "Make me" has surpassed the 900,000 units in US starting its race to Platinum status during the upcoming months. The song was officialy certified Gold by the RIAA several months ago.

"Make me" served as Glory's lead single and Britney's career 40th single release, it strongly debuted at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming Spears' 20th Top 20 hit in America, on its 7th week on chart the song climbed back and rematched its #17 peak position once again.

Say whatever you want about "Make me" and the "Glory" era but more and more female singles are struggling to outpeak it these days.
And glad to see my estimation from February was fully accurate

So happy for her. Streaming is definitely changing the game and her numbers will be even better in a few years. That’s what I love about streaming, with iTunes people did a “one-time” payment, but with streaming the artist can make profits and get more certifications with longevity.
