I don't think it was an official update, cause this year they released her best sellers in UK and Work Bitch was behind Boys (which sales are over 90k)
This. Probably fake like many things that "leaked" last year, unfortunately. I would love to know its total including streaming though.

The only artists i can think of who has outsold her are: Madonna, Rihanna, Celine, Whitney, Kylie, Beyonce, Mariah and possibly a few more that i've forgotten. She should be at around #10-#15 in terms of overall records for female artists in the UK.
Yeah, 14m records is pretty good. Her single sales up until this decade are amazing IMO. She was the biggest female singles artists of the 00s decade (3rd overall only after Westlife and Eminem). Can you imagine if BOMT, Oops, Toxic, etc were released during the streaming era? BOMT would be at 2 million for sure.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: The Weeknd's Back in the Top 40, George Carlin Returns to Chart After Nearly 32 Years
        By Keith Caulfield | September 29, 2016

Only 31 albums have sold 9 million copies since Nielsen started electronically tracking music purchases in 1991.

Adele is one of just six acts that have sold at least 9 million copies of two different albums in the Nielsen era. Her previous release, 21, has sold 11.7 million.

She joins Backstreet Boys (Millennium, 12.3 million and their self-titled album, 10.2 million), Garth Brooks (Ropin’ the Wind, 9.6 million and No Fences, 9.01 million), Celine Dion (Falling Into You, 10.8 million and Let’s Talk About Love, 9.6 million), Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP, 11 million and The Eminem Show, 10.7 million) and Britney Spears (…Baby One More Time, 10.6 million and Oops!… I Did It Again, 9.2 million).

                  • Can anyone do a breakdown of Britney's biggest selling markets in Europe (album sales wise)? I know that the Top 3 markets (UK, Germany, France) must be her strongest markets (albums sales wise). She sold around 5m+ in the UK, 2,5m in France and 3m in Germany, totalling to 10,5m in those 3 markets alone! What about other strong European markets like Italy, Spain and Netherlands. I heard Britney was pretty huge in Ireland as well. Can anyone do a ranking on Britney's biggest European markets (album sales wise)?

If you class Sade as a female act [28.0m] - I don't, as the group is multi-gendered - then the top 10 from Mariah down would all shift down a place. If you include Sade, then you'd also have to include The Corrs, who had a phenomenal career in Europe [easily 20m albums sold]. Without Sade [and The Corrs], Britney might sneak in - but nipping at her heels are acts like Cher and Alanis Morisette, both have sold approaching 18m albums. And then you've got the likes of Nana Mouskouri - an act I've never looked at but someone who I'm confident has sold enough albums to feature in the top 10.

                            • You caught me

Are you sure about Gloria being at 18m? I think 17.5m might be a better estimate but I'm not completely sure. I got her sales from here (which add up to 16.85m, she has released two albums since then but they barely charted anywhere). She and Britney are pretty much tied.

                              • The thing with Gloria is that she charted a lot of records a before tracking was so sophisticated - there's a bigger margin of error than there is with Britney.

I think anything between 17-18m would suffice - same as with Cher.

                                • With both BOMT and Oops I Did It Again both in the 4-5m range, I wonder how they would place among the biggest selling albums by female artists in Europe. Perhaps Top 100? Can anyone provide a full list? I know the top 20 should contain huge albums like: Back To Black (Amy Winehouse), Tracy Chapman's debut, Madonna's True Blue and TIC, Celine's LTAL and FIY, Mariah's Music Box, Whitney's 2nd album and Bodyguard Soundtrack, Jagged Little Pill and Come on Over etc. I know there's a lot of female albums that sold 4m+ in Europe, but I'm quite curious on how Britney would fit in there.

                                  • You're right, it's harder to estimate sales for older acts, so we will never know for sure. 17-18m is a good estimation though.

On another topic, MJD estimated the following single sales for her (physical/digital format)

                                    Scream & Shout – 8,500,000

I think he did a great job, however Ooh La La and My Only Wish make 0 sense to me. Way too high. And I think he underestimated Circus (it's around 6.5m) and Pretty Girls (closer to 600k, it definitely outsold Perfume).

                                    • I would like to update the thread (along with Ivica) with more accurate info over the following days. But before we do I would like to hear what most people think. There seems to be a debate regarding her album sales (as happens with all the big divas). What do you guys think? What are the most accurate figures?

I personally think MJD underestimated her first 3 albums. The rest of his work is fine and I think he did a really good job, but his previous estimations made more sense imo, he literally took millions away from them. Now that I think about it, Mediatraffic overestimated her first 4 albums (especially OIDIA, this one goes from one extreme to another, MJD claims 18m, he previously claimed nearly 20m, Mediatraffic claims 22m). This album seems to be rather hard to estimate.

I think her album sales could look like this, but I'm open for discussion:

...Baby One More Time - 24 million
Oops!... I Did It Again - 20 million
                                      Britney - 10.5 million
In the Zone - 7.5 million
Greatest Hits: My Prerogative - 7 million
                                      Blackout - 2.5 million
                                      Circus - 3.9 million
The Singles Collection - 1.1 million
                                      Femme Fatale - 1.7 million
                                      Britney Jean - 600,000
Glory - 250,000 (in like a week or two )
                                      Remix Albums/Other Releases ~1 million

                                      Around 80m

                                      • He's done the same for Cιline also - his estimates for Cιline have gone from 167.1m in 2007 to 168.5m in 2016. In that timeframe, she's sold more than 10m copies of new material alone - which means he's removed about 10m from his estimates for Cιline. And I would hazard a guess that he'll do the same for Mariah and probably Whitney too. Clearly an effort to drive page views.

I think you redo the work you want to do for Britney and present it in this topic - 18m for OIDIA just doesn't feel right.

                                          • I think MJD is a great estimator, and if he has deflated some of his artists' estimations, he has his own reasons. By the end of the day, all of us are just estimators. We don't really know what our favs' albums really sold, so we can't say that other's estimations are not as close to reality than our own. Besides, while MJD did deflate some of Britney and Celine's album sales, i find that he slightly inflated some of their single sales as well. Not everyone is perfect, but being conservative is nothing wrong.

Regarding Britney's album sales, I think 80m should be the consensus. The only massive deflation MJD has on Britney is on Oops I Did It Again (Album), which I believe should be in the 19,5-20m range. Moreover, I think that Femme Fatale should be upgraded as well. MJD has it's US shipments at 850K, but it is certified Platinum, so the 1,7m figure should be upgraded to closer to 1,9m. Also, we should round up Circus to 4m, as I believe it will reach there in a matter of time. 24m and 10,5m is OK for BOMT and Britney. All in all, Instinct's estimation should be the consensus. 80m albums and 100m+ singles, totaling to over 180m records sold for the biggest selling female artist of her generation.

                                            • ^ I think he estimated well all of her albums except "Oops I did it again" which was the one he underestimated the most.

There were some minor / little underestimation (but no big deal) on "Britney" which IMO is around 11m (not 10,5m) and "Britney Jean" which is over 650K (not 600K) I would even say that 700K wouldn't be out of reach.

I think most underestimate her success in Latin America. Many probably don't know that "Britney Jean" sold / shipped 100K in Latin America alone.

I think he did a great job, however Ooh La La and My Only Wish make 0 sense to me. Way too high. And I think he underestimated Circus (it's around 6.5m) and Pretty Girls (closer to 600k, it definitely outsold Perfume).

I always hear Britney's Christmas song "My Only Wish" every Christmas season here in the Philippines. I love the song.
