Care to break it down? Album by album? Or market by market?

          • Does anyone knows how many albums Britney has sold in South America? I've heard she's one the biggest artists there. According to MJD (who you all think give deflated estimations), Britney's album sales in the 3 biggest market in South America are:

            Argentina: 515,000
            Brazil: 1,185,000
            Mexico: 1,290,000
            Total: 2,990,000

Almost 3m from the 3 biggest markets! However, MJD has some blanks for some of her albums, so the total should be higher than this. I'm very impressed with Mexico! Can't believe she sold more albums there than Brazil, when Brazil is the bigger music market!

What about the whole continent? I've heard that she sold 6m albums, but based on this info (though deflated a little, so let's upgrade it to 3,5m), and the fact that other South American markets are pretty small, I'd hazard to say she sold around 1-1,5m for the rest of the markets, making a total of 4-5m albums sold. Very impressive!

              • Having over 80 million pure album sales is great

I'm sure if we added SPS sales she may be at 90 million!

                • I was looking into Britney's digital sales yesterday and noticed that we were underestimating some of her catalog, particularly her 1999-2004 singles.

I had estimated 300,000 for Stronger, but that was actually quite underestimated imo

                  August 2010: 189,000
                  January 2011: 211,000
                  June 2012: 270,000

From August 5, 2010 to January 20, 2011 (5 months and a half): 22,000 (average of 4k copies per month)
                  From January 20, 2011 to June 5, 2012 (1 year, 4 months and a half): 59,000 (average of 3.5k copies per month)

Using an average of 3.5k for the remaining 7 months of 2012 = 24k/294k sold as of 2012. Using an average of 3k for 2013 = 36k/330k sold as of 2013. Using an average of 2k for 2014 = 24k/354k sold as of 2014. Using an average of 1k for 2015 (digital sales going down and all) = 12k in 2015/366k sold as of 2015. Using an average of 750 for 2016 (10 months so far) = 7,500/373k in total, which we can round to 370k to be safe. 370k digital copies is pretty amazing for a third single from a 2000 album!

I did the same with her other singles and got the following results:

                  Sometimes - 120,000
                  Crazy - 185,000
                  I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman - 190,000
Overprotected - 75,000 (I've always been curious, does this include the remix?)
                  MATM - 340,000
                  Stronger - 370,000
                  Lucky - 330,000
                  Slave - 655,000
                  Oops - 655,000
                  BOMT - 755,000
                  Everytime - 630,000

                  • I have a question regarding Femme Fatale. MJD estimates it has shipped 850,000 in the US, 150k less than its RIAA shipment. Is he underestimating it or could it be that they shipped it some of it back?

She has about 170k SPS sales

A few more singles and should pass 200k

                          All streaming services combined!

That would mean an extra 8 million single sales

                                • Early 2012, Britney sold 28.66m digital songs, then she released s&s, ooh la la, work bitch, perfume, pretty girl and make me,
                                  so 28.66m+3.6m+0.2m+1m+0.25m+0.3m+0.35m=34.36

that means catalog sales is 1.54m in total, 342k per year. :(

                                  • Britney sold 2.2 million digital tracks in 2014 according to Billboard (x). She didn't release any new music that year and the catalog sales from Work Bitch and Perfume must be under 500k (probably less).

                                      • Are we completely sure that the 35.9 million figure includes Scream & Shout? I'm asking because Billboard didn't include it on their last two 'Ask Billboard' articles.

And it's actually Impossible that her catalog has only sold 1.5 million since 2012.

                                        1,770,000, "Piece of Me"
                                        1,713,000, "Gimme More"
                                        1,592,000, "I Wanna Go"
                                        1,520,000, "Hold It Against Me"
                                        1,255,000, "If U Seek Amy"

                                        Increase as of July 2016:
                                        Womanizer: 202k
                                        Circus: 234k
                                        TTWE: 362k
                                        3: 175k
                                        Toxic: 500k
                                        Piece Of Me: 130k
                                        Gimme More: 127k
                                        I Wanna Go: 188k
                                        Hold It Against Me: 80k
                                        If U Seek Amy: 45k

= 2 million, not including half of her discography (Baby, Oops. Slave. Everytime, Stronger, Lucky, MATM, etc). This is missing the first half of 2012 as well.

And Billboard themselves reported that she sold 2.2 million tracks in 2014. Work Bitch + Perfume sold 500k at the very most (probably less as Perfume sold 250k in total), so the rest must be catalog sales. If she sold that much in 2014, she must have sold even more in 2013 thanks to Scream & Shout and Britney Jean driving catalog sales.

If they didn't include Scream & Shout, her digital total would be around 39.4 million. But I'm not 100% sure.

Doubtful. The Top 7 artists of that list have sold more downloads back then than what Britney has sold as of now, with a majority of them increasing their total by a large amount. Beyonce, who was #8 at that list, is close to 50m downloads as of now. Moreover, I remember Usher sold 38m+ downloads a couple years back, and i doubt even he is in Top 10.

Still, that number is very impressive for an artist that had their commercial peak from 1999-2004. She probably outsold most of her peers in terms of downloads in the US, with the exception of Eminem, Beyonce and Usher.

                                            • Yeah, there's no way she's still Top 10. The fact she was Top 10 for a few years (2007-2012) is impressive though.

According to this, she went up to 29 million digital sales in May 2012 (x)

                                              May 2012 - 29 million
Scream & Shout - 3.5 million (could be more, last update was 3.26 million in August 2013, but I'd rather be conservative in this case)
                                              Ooh La La - 200,000
                                              Work Bitch - 975,000
                                              Perfume - 250,000
                                              Pretty Girls - 325,000
                                              Make Me - 350,000
Other Tracks (Scream & Shout Remix, SMS Bangerz, Tom's Diner) - 175,000+
Album Tracks (Britney Jean and Glory) - 200,000+

Total: 35 million. This would mean her entire catalog has moved 900k, which is literally impossible. 10 out of her 35 singles at the time have moved over 2 million since mid 2012, so I think it's safe to say Billboard ignored Scream & Shout for the third time and her total digital sales stand at 39.4 million (39.5 million with the remix).

                                                • I don't get why they excluded Scream & Shout from the total when they included it in her top 5 hits, or why they excluded it from their last two Ask Billboard articles. Billboard is a mess for that.

Toxic was certified Gold for over 500,000 ringtone sales back in 2006, and we know Womanizer has sold over 700,000 ringtones thanks to a Sony article from 2009.
