The SINGLE True Blue might've been number one on Japan's Oricon International chart, but the album itself never reached the summit on its original Oricon Albums chart.

So what chart did Billboard published in the 80's from Japan? Because they have "True Blue" at #01 on the Albums Chart.

Judging on Oricon itself, they didn't begin posting their albums chart until October 1987. But I'm guessing it hit number one on a Japanese CD chart? Cause judging from what I'm seeing, that's where it landed at number one, whatever chart Japan was using or maybe they were reporting the CD sales to Billboard and that's how she got that number one position with TB.

They say there "Courtesy of Music Labo 9/1/86"

They also had "Like a Virgin" album at #02.

"Madonna" album is on Wiki at #20 based on this book:

Okamoto, Satoshi (2006). Oricon Album Chart Book: Complete Edition 1970–2005. Roppongi, Tokyo:
          Oricon Entertainment. p. 349. ISBN 4-87131-077-9.

So Oricon did existed before 1987

          • Guys, as it's becoming to go off topic, please, remember this is the FEL thread... for conversations about all her other previous albums, better use her Charts & Sales general thread, ok?

            Thanks.

Not much smaller, from what I see. They usually rank around #25 (Ireland) and around #30 (New Zealand) in the list of the world's biggest music markets.
Also, the Republic of Ireland doesn't have a population of 5,5 million. It's closer to 5 million than to 5,5 so both countries are very comparable actually.
It's a good question if the Kiwi chart counted versions separately because that debut is really low, even though Madonna has never been huge over there.

                        • No debut on Iceland albums chart. (A Top 40).
It joins Norway so far as the only places where it failed to chart.

It's funny how this album knows no middle of the road... No Top 20 debuts.. It's either #1s and Top 3s... or missing the chart altogether or almost doing it.
Luckily, there's lot more cases of the 1st case than the latter.

I think Iceland chart, as the Sweden and Norway ones (and it'll probably happen the same in Denmark and Finland once updated) is mostly based on streaming as sales are really low in Nordic countries where streaming is really strong.

Because I do think NZ has become quite a weak market for her over the years as her last #1 was Music or something, but #39 is LOL especially when you see a #1 in AUS.
(I do think NZ is overrepresented in chart discussions as it's quite a small market, but just out of curiosity!)

(I do think NZ is overrepresented in chart discussions as it's quite a small market, but just out of curiosity!)
Actually her latest #01 album in New Zealand was "Ray of Light" - so even earlier in 1998.

Before that only "Like a Virgin" and "True Blue" got to #01 in New Zealand (so she only have 3 #01 albums there).

"Like a Prayer", "I'm Breathless", "Music", "American Life" and "Celebration" peaked #02
"The Immaculate Collection" and "MDNA" were #03
                                      "You Can Dance" was #04
"Erotica", "Bedtime Stories", "Confessions On A Dancefloor", "Hard Candy" and "Madame X" were #05
"Madonna", "Who's That Girl OST" and "Evita" was #06
                                      "Rebel Heart" was #07
"Something To Remember" and "GHV2" were #08

                                      "Sticky & Sweet Tour" #20
                                      "Confessions Tour" #23
                                      "Finally Enough Love" #39

"I'm Going To Tell You A Secret", "Complete Discography:1983 to 2008", "MDNA World Tour", "Rebel Heart Tour" and "Madame X: Music From the Theather Xperience" did not Chart.

This was her first studio album or compilation not to be TOP 10 in New Zealand but some of her live albums did missed the chart.

In total Madonna scored so far in New Zealand:

                                      3 #01 albums
                                      5 #02 albums
                                      10 TOP 3 albums
                                      16 TOP 5 albums
                                      22 TOP 10 albums
                                      23 TOP 20 albums
                                      25 TOP 40 Albums.

So this is Madonna lowest charting album in New Zealand but remember that she did have 5 albums that did not chart at all in New Zealand already.

This album did bad in New Zealand but overall (apart from #01 albums) Madonna did scored a good amount of TOP 10 albums there in line with most all the other world countries as well.

I think it's sign of times as streaming is taking over the charts and not something against Madonna (or a sign she is doing worst there).
I believe compilations albums with no new tracks will start doing worst in countries where streaming and new songs mean more for the charts
                                      ..

Wish we knew if both versions were counted together in New Zealand or seperatly as that would explain better such a low placement there.

Not too shabby. I would've loved to see either a #1 or a #2 debut (btw since when is a #2 "bad" or "worse than #4 or #5 but anyways) in the UK but even You Can Dance peaked "only" at #5 way back in 1987 so this isn't too bad at all. It means that people and her fanbase are still interested in her legacy. I think this cute little project was a nice start to promote her 40th anniversary. Really not bad at all.

Looks like in US most Madonna compilations peaked #6 tor #07 (only TIC was #02 and You Can Dance was #14) so #08 is a great result for a remix compilation.

Exactly. The best selling remix album of all time you can dance went up to only 14 at her peak. After 35 years no.8 is still overwhelming. So happy for her.
