Does anyone have any idea how close it is to be certified ?
There's several songs closer to new platinum recertifications already or in 2023:
14 million "All I Want For Christmas Is You"
4 million: "One Sweet Day" & "Obsessed"
3 million: "Hero"
2 million: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," "Heartbreaker" & "Shake It Off"
1 million: "Love Takes Time," "I'll Be There," "Thank God I Found You," & "It's Like That"

There's other songs that are actually closer to gold eligible ("Can't Take That Away," "Anytime You Need A Friend," "Butterfly," "Whenever You Call," "Through The Rain," "I Want To Know What Love Is," and a bunch of holiday tracks).

In this article, for the tracking week ending December 16, 2021, Billboard noted: "Since its release, the song has upped its U.S. totals to 4.3 billion in radio audience, 1.4 billion streams and 3.7 million in download sales."
That converts to over 13 million RIAA singles units for "AIWFCIY" without including the best 2 weeks of streams/sales last year (nearly record-breaking consumption) nor any of the SPS this year, which is quickly adding up. The song should easily be over 15 million units by the end of this season with its current trajectory.

not quite platinum for streams alone yet probably in December when it reaches its height as a single needs 1,750,000,000 streams to equal 1,000,000 downloads don't know the ratio for radio airplay to equal platinum and if those sales stand up AIWFCIY will easily get certified 16x platinum next year furthering its lead as the best selling Holiday song in US history and may help Merry Christmas finally reach diamond nearly 30 years after release though it took Elvis's Christmas album 54 years from its original 1957 release to sept 9th 2011 to be certified diamond though the diamond award only launched in 1999 thus far the only female artists with 3 diamond albums are Shania Twain and Whitney Houston Twain's Come On Over is the highest certified female album & Canadian album ever at 20x platinum though its also under certified last certified Nov 15th 2004 and is a decent catalog seller also Metallica's self titled 1991 album should be about 20x platinum now it was last certified 16x platinum in December 2012 and sells between 200,000 and 400,000 per year even being over 30 years old"the love of a mothers life is her child/children"

bm08 The RIAA accepts only on-demand streams (which all major streaming platforms have been doing for the past 5+ years), for its certifications and they are all weighed the same (150 streams = 1 song unit, 1,500 streams = 1 album unit). Billboard charts weigh streams differently (paid vs ad-supported/free).Last edited by Bella; Fri November 18, 2022, 20:16.

Mariah will be performing All I Want For Christmas Is You at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Thursday Nov 25 and maybe this will increase the ratings some from last year which had 25,000,000 people watch the parade and imagine if 30% of the viewers stream/buy the song the next day that would mean between 7.5 million and 9 million streams that day alone"the love of a mothers life is her child/children"

With #1s now at 6 Platinum in the US, its worldwide total has to be above 16 million easily, right?
Maybe 16.5 or higher (or higher still when you consider that its totals in many countries haven't been updated since the 90s despite it selling very well for years... as stevyy points out).
It's underestimated sometimes when considering her big selling albums. Would easily be her third now... well, depends on where Merry Christmas lands after this year.
