  • ^ That chart is for the decade. And thanks for sharing!

And it is kinda surprising. Obviously that's not on the strength of AIWFCIY alone.
She'd be getting massive play on AC and R&B stations as well as Pop, which would help her numbers... but those Country numbers are huge.

Edit: omg... so many times I use the ^ to not quote a post above and my post ends up on the top of a new page.

        Wow!

She received more airplay than new female artists and female artists in their prime.

          • Amazing. Never expected for Mariah to be placed so high (#9) in the airplay audience especially within the 10's decade.

                          Revisiting Mariah's Milestones

                          Decades of #1s

It is well known that Mariah dominated the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the 90s with her impressive string of #1s. Her chart success however was not just limited to her first decade of hits.
Below I've recapped Mariah's #1s tally through the decades.

                          1990s

Mariah's 14 #1 hits in the 90s was the biggest haul of chart toppers in a single decade since the Beatles amassed 18 #1s in the 60s.
This chart dominance has not been matched by any artist since, and Mariah is only the 3rd artist behind Elvis and The Beatles to achieve 10 or more #1s in a single 'calendar' decade.

Naturally based on #1 hits Mariah ranks as the #1 female solo artist of the 90s:

                          1 Mariah 14
                          2 Janet 6
                          3 Madonna 4
                          3 Whitney 4
                          3 Celine 4

In the 90s Mariah had 6 studio albums, 8 in total with singles commercially released in the US during this decade.

                          2000s

While Mariah's chart success waned in her second decade, and that is true when compared to her absolute dominance in the 90s, what she achieved in terms of #1 singles still put her high on the list of top achievers.

Mariah ranked equal third among female artists.

                          1 Rihanna 5
                          1 Beyonce 5
                          3 Mariah 4
                          3 Alicia Keys 4
It must also be remembered that the 2000s represented Mariah's proper second decade of her career, having had 10 years of charting prior.

Mariah's #1s from her first in 1990 to her 18th in 2008 spanned almost 18 years.

In the 2000s Mariah had 5 studio albums with singles commercially released in the US during this decade.

                          2000 to 2019 (20 years)

Mariah's 3rd decade was her leanest in terms of chart success. This decade represented her 20th to 29th full years in the industry.
Despite this Mariah took AIWFCIY to #1 and achieved her 5th chart topper since the year 2000.

In the 20 years of the new millenium, Mariah still ranks high among female artists with the most #1 songs.

                          1 Rihanna 14
                          2 Katy Perry 9
                          3 Beyonce 6
                          4 Mariah 5
                          4 Taylor 5

In the 2010s Mariah had 3 studio albums, 4 in total with singles promoted during this decade.

                          Her first 10 years

Mariah's first calendar decade may have yielded 14 #1 singles however in her first 10 years proper (from her first single in mid 1990 to mid 2000) she actually achieved 15 #1 singles.

Among #1 hauls, The Beatles achieved their full 20 #1s in their first 10 years. Elvis achieved 17 #1s in his first 10 years.

Mariah thus achieved 3 #1 hits in her second full 10 year period (mid 2000 to mid 2010), that irrespective of calendar decades shows impressive longevity.

                              • In the 1990s Mariah released 9 albums with singles, not 8.

                                1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999

MTV Unplugged had I'll Be There and #1's had Sweetheart, When You Believe and I still Believe.

                                • ^ I didn't count Merry Christmas because there wasn't a commercial single released in the US during the 90s and therefore there was no impact on the Hot 100 from that album during that decade.

I will reword those little points.

                                    • ^ It would have definitely gone top 10 in the US with sales in 1994. For sure. Even if it had a limited pressing. But then sales of Merry Christmas may have been impacted slightly.

Forever would have probably gone top 10 too but I don't think its sales would have been very strong being the 4th single, but who knows.

I think there was a lot of debate between Mariah and her label in 1995/96.

Having a top 10 single is always good press. Regarding 'Merry Christmas' it would have been huge as so few christmas songs had managed to go top 10 up to that point.

*MTV stopped running their weekly countdown in 1997 and switched to the Total Request Live format

MTV didn't air a Top Videos of 2005 segment, which would've most likely included We Belong Together near the top.
