NEW RELEASES IN OVERTIME

While We The Best/Epic's DJ Khaled and KIDinaKORNER/Interscope's Imagine Dragons remain deadlocked in the battle for #1, both label teams are lobbying hard and aggressively challenging what does and doesn't get counted. DJ Khaled's 'Grateful' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Plus, Imagine Dragons' 'Evolve' arrives at No. 2 and Prince and the Revolution's reissued 'Purple Rain' soundtrack returns at No. 4.

DJ Khaled lands his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as his latest release, Grateful, bows atop the list. The set — which was released on June 23 through We the Best/Epic Records — earned 149,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 29, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 50,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 15, 2017-dated chart (where DJ Khaled debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 4.

Grateful follows DJ Khaled’s first No. 1, earned a little less than a year ago, when Major Key launched in the penthouse (on the list dated Aug. 20, 2016) with 95,000 units. Of that starting-week sum, 59,000 were in traditional album sales. (Notably, during Major Key’s first week of release, it was exclusively available to stream through Apple Music, and for sale as a download through the iTunes Store. Grateful, however, was widely available at all streaming services and retailers.)

In total, Grateful marks DJ Khaled’s seventh top 10-charting effort, stretching back to 2007’s We the Best, which debuted and peaked at No. 8.

The new album is powered by streams, as it logged a robust 81,000 SEA units — the largest SEA haul for an album since the May 27-dated list, when Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. tallied 86,000 SEA units in its fourth week on the list. (Grateful’s 81,000 SEA units equates to 121.19 million on-demand audio streams for the collected tracks on the album during the tracking week.)

The rest of Grateful’s debut frame is comprised of TEA units (a little under 19,000).

Grateful was ushered in by a pair of top five-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, “I’m the One” (his first No. 1 on the list), featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, and “Wild Thoughts,” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. DJ Khaled’s star-packed Grateful album also boasts guests such as Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Drake, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj and Calvin Harris.

Imagine Dragons Fly to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100 for First Time

The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

DJ Khaled earns a new peak on the Artist 100, pushing 5-2. His new LP, Grateful, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (149,000 units), while two of its singles rank at Nos. 2 and 3 on the Hot 100: "I'm the One," featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, and "Wild Thoughts," featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, respectively. Album sales mark Khaled's greatest Artist 100 points contributor (36 percent), followed by streaming (27 percent) (as Grateful debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales with 50,000 sold).

DJ Khaled’s Grateful notches a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart -- it is the first album to spend more than one week at No. 1 in two months. In the week ending July 6, Grateful earned 70,000 equivalent album units (down 53 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Traditional album sales comprised 16,000 (down 68 percent) of that sum.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 22, 2017-dated chart (where DJ Khaled holds for a second week at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 11.

DJ Khaled’s Grateful finished its second week stronger than expected, as some industry forecasters had suggested the album would earn around 60,000 units for the week. The album continues to be supported largely by streams, as it tallied 42,000 SEA units -- down 48 percent -- equaling 63.4 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs. Grateful also earned 12,000 TEA units for the week (down 36 percent).

Grateful’s 70,000 unit tally is the lowest sum for a No. 1 album in five months. The last No. 1 title to dip below that sum was The Weeknd’s Starboy, which earned 56,000 units on the Feb. 11-dated chart -- the album’s fifth (and final) nonconsecutive week at No. 1.

Grateful is the first album to log more than one week at No. 1 since Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. ruled the list for three consecutive weeks (May 6, 13 and 20). Between DAMN. and Grateful, seven albums took turns at No. 1 for one week each.

It leads Hot Rap Songs for a 10th week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a fifth frame. Meanwhile, Khaled spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with parent album Grateful, which holds on top with 70,000 equivalent album units.

Back to Khaled: "Wild Thoughts," also from Grateful and featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, dips from its No. 3 Hot 100 high to No. 4. It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (39.8 million, down 5 percent) and jumps 17-14 on Radio Songs (78 million, up 28 percent), boasting the Hot 100's top airplay gain for a second week.
