• Thanks, BeeBoy, you definitely have got a point. I wonder whether it's still possible in the US to have an album doing well on the charts with the people not caring about one specific single (e.g. Norah Jones' 'Come Away With Me' back in the day). At least in Europe, that's definitely not a contradiction...

I think Coldplay themselves got tired of selling out in the mainstream as well. I mean, in the current decade, they collaborated with pop stars like Kylie Minogue, Rihanna, Beyoncé, etc. Even Chris Martin sported a very Adam Levine image with the colorful clothes, college looking hairstyle, etc.

They could have easily done that again by doing major promo but they opted for a low key, organic approach this time around.

focus on their muscal growth instead of catering to the generic masses. Theyve had so many hits per era this time they focus on growing more musically with no mainstream hits. BUt I for one think Orphans is probably one of the worst songs theyve ever made adnd probably the worst lead single.

                                  • Coldplay Ties U2 (Again) for Most Adult Alternative Songs No. 1s

                                    "Orphans" becomes Coldplay's 13th leader.
Coldplay opens the new decade atop Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart, as "Orphans" rises 2-1 on the Jan. 4, 2020-dated survey.

"Orphans" is Coldplay's 13th No. 1, tying the band with U2 for the most leaders in the chart's 24-year history.

U2 and Coldplay were previously tied for the record between December 2015 and October 2017, before the former's "You're the Best Thing About Me" ruled for seven weeks.

                                    13, Coldplay
                                    13, U2

                                    9, Jack Johnson

                                    7, R.E.M.

"Orphans" is Coldplay's first No. 1 since "Adventure of a Lifetime," which led for six weeks beginning in December 2015.

Adult Alternative Songs is the third airplay list that "Orphans" has crowned. It concurrently rules Alternative Songs and the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart for a third week each, with the song topping the latter ranking with 8.6 million audience impressions in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. The track also holds at its No. 29 high on Adult Pop Songs.

"Orphans" is the lead single from Coldplay's eighth studio album, Everyday Life, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and No. 7 on the Billboard 200 dated Dec. 7.
